What they don’t tell you about becoming a doctor: you “learn” how to wash your hands at least once a year. Probably twice.

Hi friends! I’m still here, just not doing much medical school stuff. Tying up lose ends for residency like getting a PPD, and stuff like that. I’ve been busy though, we tried really hard for 2-3 weeks to find a suitable rental for residency but we just found a few super expensive options that were just barely okay but nothing that really made us happy. So we decided to buy a house last minute and are currently going through the closing process! We honestly got super duper lucky finding somewhere that we can move into a week before our bogus landlord kicks us out because he doesn’t understand (or listen to me explain) how residency works.
So lots of change but also lots of waiting. But everyone from my new residency who has contacted me so far has been super nice and helpful and the residents have unionized as well! That’s something I’ve never heard of but it definitely give me more confidence that I won’t be unfairly taken advantage of.

I am applying to get into DO right now. Im taking the MCAT in July. Do you have any tips to help look good for DO? Should i write my essay specifically for DO school? Thanks
That’s awesome!! Stereotypically, DO schools are more holistic and want to hear about your experiences outside of school and your growth as a person in an essay whereas MD schools are more focused on grades and are looking for more academic obstacles you’ve overcome and such so if you’re applying to both, it might be worth it to write two separate essays. I only applied DO since the osteopathic philosophy really connected with my personal vision of the doctor I want to be, so I mentioned that in my application essay! And when I went in for my interviews I was almost always met with “oh, you’re the EMT who went to Australia, tell us about that!!” So they’re definitely interested in the life experiences that make you who you are! It might be worth reflecting on those experiences and how they’ve helped you grow as a person and future physician. Write them down and you’ll look stellar and reflective in interviews 😎
I hope this helped! Good luck and feel free to ask more questions as you progress along your journey â˜ș

If you take these, do you have tips for shelf exams? Because my scores have been wildly inconsistent between clerkships
I technically took the COMAT not the Shelf (literally the same thing just DO vs MD). But my tips would be:
1) Online Med Ed, the videos are free for med students and this was the absolute backbone of my clinical years. If you can get access to the study notes, they’re a great reference for review.
2) Our school routinely sent us “key phrase lists” that were basically a list of every single topic on the COMAT two tests ago. Reach out to your school and see if they have access to something similar. Online Med Ed covers most things but I would spend two days or so before the exam reading about every single topic they listed via UpToDate and it usually got me at least 4-5 extra points.
3) Talk to the student who was on your rotation last and just took that shelf. Not encouraging actually discussing questions and answers here but they might just have some tips on what to focus on when you’re studying.
4) Unless you’re getting into board study mode, you don’t really have to overdo it with questions. I had TRUELEARN COMAT prep and there were only about 100-120 practice questions for each topic. They were definitely helpful and kept my test taking skills from slipping but if you’re using UWORLD you don’t have to try to do every single question in that topic.
I hope this helps! :)
