Research : Écorché
Écorché is the term used for a figure painted , drawn or sculpted whilst showing the muscles of the body without its skin. It is normally a figure study for works or as an excercise for a student artist. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci ,Willem van den Broecke and Paulus Pontius used this technique. Da Vinci carried out some of teh first well known studies of écorché as he dissected cadavers ( dead bodies ) and sketched detailed drawings of them to get a better understanding of the human body.

I wanted to capture the Lack of movement at home as some days you just want to lay down in bed and relax rather than getting up and getting active . I decided to draw one of my weights on the bed using pastels . I was about to begin a workout however my bed looked far more pleasing so I just left the weight down and lay in bed on my phone.

I decided to wet and freeze a pair of my GAA shorts to try and capture the movement in them and how they would look as if I were running on the field and they gather up and change shape from when they are hanging up in store or folded in my drawer .
I had fun doing this however I would in future maybe wear them and cast a mould of them with my leg in motion to catch a clearer image of them in movement on my body .

Artist Research: Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vincis early anatomical studies deal with mainly the skeleton and muscles however Leonardo combined anatomical studies with physiological research .
Upon observing the static structure of the body, Leonardo proceeded to study the role of individual parts of the body in mechanical activity. This led him finally to the study of the internal organs; among them he probed most deeply into the brain, heart, and lungs as the “motors” of the senses and of life. His findings from these studies were recorded in the famous anatomical drawings, which are among the most significant achievements of Renaissance science. The drawings are based on a connection between natural and abstract representation; he represented parts of the body in transparent layers that afford an “insight” into the organ by using sections in perspective, reproducing muscles as “strings,” indicating hidden parts by dotted lines, and devising a hatching system.
Da Vincis works really interest me as his attention to detail was so fine. The dissection of the human body contributed to his work hugely showing teh fiber detains behind the skin

Artist research : Benjamin Skop
Benjamin Skop is an artist who works with the human body but his primary interest is human movement.
Skop is interested in how we perceive motion by way of our perceptual apparatus as well as through our active motion based engagement with the world.
Skop said “ I am curious about possible ways of expanding our understanding of the moving body through various technologies in particular image and time -based media . I find interest in the inherent geometry proportions and shape of our anatomy , as well as how our physique relates to its environment and the wider framing of human life. Perhaps by our acts of moving in the world , we ourselves create and kind of “moving architecture “ .
Skop utilizes various methods in his works that include classifying , reducing , abstracting and systematizing .

Unfortunately as I was sick and missed the painting workshop one week I decided to use what I had at home to complete the excercise for myself . I asked one of my housemates to stand up facing away from me with her hair tied in a low bun and leaning on the sweeeping brush handle . However it does not look visually appealing to the eye and it would have been way more beneficial had I been at the workshop but I had fun using a selection of paints and my pallette knives and trying to catch up on the missed work

I went to the gym yesterday and saw everyone doing their own excercises .Everyone was being independent in their own way however I couldn’t photograph random people in the gym due to Gdpr😂 so I chose a stretch that stood out to me flexing the calves and glutes and I just used 3 highlighters to reflect where I felt the muscles were most being worked on physically

Over the weekend I want to create a makeup look defining the facial muscles . Here is some inspiration of roughly what I’d like to do but I’ll interpret it in my own way not just copying a photo from online . I decided to paint on my face with makeup rather than on paper to get a physical feel and idea of the muscles that hide under our skin

A quick Sketch I did of a ladies football action shot capture the muscle movement in the legs and also the draping of the jersey when the body changes direction. I also drew a cone and a football as the shapes intrigued me
