Who is Dylan Audigier ?
Written By Kariel Jaie-Sarah Castellanos
Meet Dylan Audigier, the 18 year old fashion designer and model from Los Angeles, California. Dropping out of school to make a name for himself in the fashion world. The mysterious son of four children from the Audigier family independently striving on his own. Building up his current brand DyDy Audigier from the underground. I interviewed him to find out what it is like to be so young and carry the legacy of such a successful last name. He allowed me to have a personal insight into the life of Dylan.
For starters, what have you released already from your brand (DyDy Audigier) and what do you plan to release in the future?
“For now I'm taking small steps. I'm starting off with a simple white t-shirt to show people my minimum of creativity. I plan on doing monthly releases with other specific pieces. Next month will be a hat and the month after will be a pair of jeans.”
Prince range?
“My t-shirt will be at 35 euros which is about 37 - 38 dollars. My jeans will be about 120-130. It really depends on what I'm dropping at that moment.”
I asked Dylan where most of his inspiration came from when it comes to becoming a designer. What inspired his launch and designs for his brands? They all traced back to the same answer. His father, Christian Audigier ( a french fashion designer known for his successful clothing lines Ed Hardy and Von Dutch). Since Dylan could remember, he knew he was going to become a designer. Feeling forced into his fashion career with the burden of having to live up to the expectations for his father's sake.
“All my childhood he would bring me into the factories and the storage units where all the product was shipped. This has been passed on from generation to generation. I plan to pass it on to my kids .”
Have you ever had days where you want to give up fashion?
“I never really wanted to give up. This is for my dad so there's no way I could. I only get down when I have problems producing my stuff.”
COVID has recently hit Dylan's brand hard since he can't go to the factories and speak about getting his items produced. His team consists of his photographer and videographer but he carries the brand by himself at the end of the day. Handling all the paperwork, money, and registrations for his brand solely shows a lot of independence from such a young boy. He still considers himself a child. These days he finds himself most excited about releasing his clothes. Nothing more but passion flows from him.
“Ever since my dad passed away it's been a struggle financially for my mom. We didn't get anything from my dad's part. I had to work on the side to make money for myself. Nobody gave me money to pay for my stuff. I had to work to pay for all my products.”
I asked him questions like who are your favorite designers and favorite brands? He always said himself. Dylan makes clothes to his liking. He doesn't follow the trends to fit in.The fact that he designs clothes he wants in his own wardrobe and plans to share it with the world is what makes Dylan an amazing designer. He admits he fears people looking at his work negativity. He doesn't want to be compared to his father since he believes his father's level is unmatchable. He wants to master using photoshop and sketching from his iPad. He believes he needs to learn to do all these things himself because only he knows what he wants to design.
“I like expressing my creativity and being able to see people with my clothes on. That's the biggest part. Seeing people appreciate the time and effort I put into my clothes. I was brought into this world for this. Nobody knows what I'm capable of, in terms of fashion and creativity.”
Would you like to do a runway show of your own in the future?
“Oh yeah, definitely. I'm doing it soon. Once I release the first collection I'm doing it.”
I asked him off-topic questions to loosen him up a bit to see what Dylan is like outside of the world of fashion.
What is your spirit animal?
“A tiger. “
Define yourself within three words?
“Simple, classy, and stylish.”
If your life were a song, what song would it be?
“Damn that’s the hardest question! Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones and Run It Up by 8Ruki.”
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Never give up, my dad told me that .”
What is your advice to the younger designers who admire you? What is a message you want to let everyone know and hear?
“First thing is never to give up. That should be your whole life mentality. To never give up and keep on doing what you want to do. Pursue your goal and never stop. If you don't have a goal at the moment, make a goal. It's a good thing to have in your life.”
Throughout this interview, I was exposed to a side of Dylan Audigier that is not shown to the media often. With every question I had, he always answered with a passionate detailed response like no other. He is an original masterpiece at his prime. I look forward to seeing how far Dylan’s career will grow. A boy so determined to make his name shine brighter in the competitive world of fashion. He will achieve wonderful things and best of all, he will make his family proud.
