“A great movie is really visible with a lot of work you put into it and it's nice that you showed the "dark side" of the water signs, because it may seem that they are sweet and lovable, but deep down they have their dark side, just revenge, manipulation is not apparent“

Symbolism and explanation

Use of yellow - blue - red :

In some scenes I tried to show these three colours in the same position and action to accent the contrast between happiness, sadness and anger, the main emotions of these colours. I felt that showing these emotions in different scenes might be not strong enough because water signs are known to be emotional, that means they feel many emotions at the same time. It can explain their behaviour very well, how sometimes even though they feel love and happiness they can’t express it so they act angry or depressed. Weird point of view, but this is who they are. 

Water motion : 

There are many different water motions in my film. I used this to show specifically the thoughts and attitude of water signs. It can be easily read by symbolism of colours if you understand it but I’ll try to explain it. So when the water is still and the scene is light blue it means to show the sadness BUT when the water is still and suddenly it starts to move because of pouring water there it supposed to show overthinking, the main weakness of the signs, how from sadness and depression one thought can change everything. 

When water is moving aggressively ( storm alike) the scene is red. It supposed to show the boiling blood in veins, the anger, the deep urge to revenge, the dark side if their overthinking, of their emotions. 

When water is mixed or moved by a brush : it supposed to show how easily water signs are influenced by people. So the main symbolism of water signs is water, the brush symbolise people around, how easily they can rip them apart, make them believe in certain things, act the way they don’t want to. Scenes are dark blue or green, which means that water signs follow these people just because they are jealous, sad, left, lonely. The behaviour of water zodiac signs depends on other people and how they treat them. The outcome of it is usually  worst than it should be because water zodiac signs are vile and vengeful. When they can’t stand being manipulated or influenced by people no more, when they are truly hurt, their hidden nature appears and the demon wakes up.

Here is my video test when I tried to achieve the German expressionism effect. I remember from first classes how we tried to achieve that effect by painting and I wanted to create something similar to that.

Colours

I want to point out how important colours are in my film. So I’m trying to achieve a lot of effects using colours only. I did a deep research on symbolism of different colours. 

Use of blue : You can see a lot of blue colours in my film. I’m playing with blue colour pallet almost in every shot and here is the explanation. I’m using alternately light blue and dark blue. Dark blue portrays emotions like loyalty, trust, security which is the main qualities of water signs. Water signs are extremely loyal, responsible, water signs feel the urge to make long-term friendships and relationships. Water signs expect these qualities in return from other people. Light blue portrays calmness, support, sadness, depression. Water signs are extremely emotional. Cancer and pisces are believed to be the most emotional and easy to hurt signs in astrology, on the other hand Scorpios are secretive and they don’t want to show their feeling to everyone. Even though scorpios are more fierce than cancer or pisces, emotions like sadness, calmness, support, loyalty or reliability connects them. 

Use of green: I’m using green mostly to show the bad qualities of the signs in my film. Green symbolise envy, materialism, revenge. There is also difference between using light green and dark green. Light green symbolise health, relax, joy, luck growth the opposite of what I want to show. Use of dark green is the best way to show the bad qualities of the signs. 

Use of red: You may expect water signs to be calm, harmless and weak but that is the facade. Water signs are masters in playing “I’m the victim” game. Water signs are considered to be the most manipulative signs in astrology. Under the facade of being victim they plan and manipulate everything for their joy. Truly scary qualities. I’m using only dark, strong red colour. Red symbolise passion, romance, sexuality, anger, danger. What I realised from my research and life experience, water signs are completely devoted for love and friendship. There is a small change you can make them angry or sad just by judging them or laughing at them. The only thing that can break them is betrayal. After that they don’t want to fight, scream, cry. They are planning revenge. It may take them months or even years, but they are truly dedicated to avenge their lost trust. Red also symbolise sexuality. For example, scorpios are believed to be the most sexual signs in astrology. Water signs are passionate lovers. They would do anything to feel the sexual tension and to relieve their own fantasies. Eyes are windows to the Soul

Our eyes don’t lie, they’re windows to the soul. They show the truth, no matter what face we put on, in any situation. The best way to get to know someone is to look them in the eyes and observe what they reveal about their emotional state.

Many studies have shown that when we meet someone for the first time, our eyes can convey a wide range of feelings: trust or distrust, security, contentment, fear, etc. and this is the exact way I’m going to show emotions in my film.

The beginning

I started. Finally after weeks of research I started filming. I’m truly excited. I remember the first weeks after I read our assignment details and I remember how sad, scared and unsure I was about this project. After almost 5 months of research, planning and organising this Film I can finally say that I’m truly excited to do this assignment. I have an idea, so many ideas. I’m not sure how to put these together yet, but I will worry about this later. I finished my last book. 

Star Power: A Simple Guide to Astrology for the Modern Mystic by Vanessa Montgomery

It didn’t show me anything new about zodiac signs to be honest but while reading it I came up with an idea to show the delicacy of water signs. I want to make this film in two divided parts, first will be “The delicacy of water signs” and second will be “The devil’s side of the water signs”. I realised that creating a film where the only thing happening on screen would be water in different states is boring. I need to create a tiny story behind it, but only tiny one. Show the true nature and deepness of the topic. And that’s exactly what I am working on now.

To discover what kind of technique I want to use in my film I did research on photography. These are photos that truly caught my attention. I see so much potential in these pictures.

The best description of this effect is to make it abstract. I want my film to be abstract. The only thing I want to avoid are black and white colours. I think it will fit better to add more pastel colours or more green/blue colours.

Also when we think about water signs what is the first thought that occur us? WATER. I’m so into creating this effect. I will continue to search how to do it, but I think real life experience and a few attempts with bathbombs and paints may work.

Poems

To support my ideas I did deep research on each zodiac sign from water signs group. I started with scorpio because that was my first interest since I’m scorpio. 

I tried to find some inspiration how can I show power and nature of zodiac signs and I found these poems. I’m thinking about narration, but it’s really hard to put every sign together and create narration because each sign is different, that’s why I was looking for poetry. I’m not sure what I will do, maybe I’ll use the poetry, maybe I’ll put some narration over my film. It’s hard to decide. So here are the poems I am inspired: 

SCORPIO

How am I suppose to show passion, love and determination? 

PISCES

I'm the saddest person, but I smile the brightest. 5. I'll never accept being second best for someone. 6. I'll either tell you exactly what I think, or stay silent. 7. I'll forgive, but never forget. 8. I want to escape reality, it's a gift and a curse. 9. Never underestimate me. I'm more than you think. 10. I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim. How am I suppose to show sadness, demons and “There is more to me than meets the eye” ? 

CANCER 

“Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold describes well the line that cancer walks between sand and sea, between mind and matter. Meditative and transcendent, this poem is the Cancer’s hymn. Cancers are great at reading energies and finding balanced the emotional and material world.

How am I suppose to show reading energy and finding balance in emotions? 

It’s all seems so hard but I will continue to research more about techniques.

Research

New week, new ideas, new research. Last time I wanted to read new books about astrology to make up my mind and find new inspirations. It’s good I’m interested in this subject because I actually read a few more. I was also looking for books about some creative using of lights, colours etc. and I found these: 

Painting With Light, by John Alton - great explanation of faces and how to light each to their best advantage, how to light a dinner table or a campfire scene, and how to light for different times of day.

Well, not gonna lie I didn’t buy the book, so the informations I have are only from some webpages I found, but it still helped me little bit. 

I was also looking at this one “If It's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die: The Power of Colour in Visual Storytelling by Patti Bellantoni ”.  

I read only third and fifth chapter where you can find out more about colour blue and green. These colours are the ones I am the most interested in. The books says colour blue is sad and has a  pervasive  sense  of  melancholy, on the other hand green, in its plant manifestation, signals life itself. That makes a lot of sense when you think about elements like water, fire etc. but honestly it makes more sense when you think about air. Green - air colour, blue - water colour. I will go with the blue. 

“Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces: All About the Water Signs by Jennifer Lynn Jones”  - is the next book I shuffled through. Good book when you want to understand the nature of your zodiac signs, also a lot informations about water signs, their power and desires. 

“A Drop Of Water: A Book of Science and Wonder by  Walter Wick “  was another book I’ve seen. The camera stops the action and magnifies it so that all the amazing states of water can be observed : water as ice, rainbow, steam, frost, dew. Very interesting way to show you a new perspective of water.

The inspiration

I started filming my previous idea for film and I thought I should share my inspirations with you. So I’ve been doing some research and I found out some interesting ways of showing water as an element. I’m truly inspired by this piece of art created by Kim Keever

What is so amazing about these pictures ? Well I figured how well movements in water can express feelings. So let’s imagine you want to show the anger or sadness : buy bath bomb and simply drop it in a water as fast as you want. It’s an amazing effect, you should definitely check this out.

The new idea

So I came up with a new idea of my experimental film. I love astrology and since I remember I was always determined to find out the deepest and intimate people’s desires and urges. I read many books and articles about zodiac signs and I realized how powerful they can be. So each one of us have their own zodiac sign, there are four types : water signs, air signs, fire signs, earth signs. If you are interested in exploring your own zodiac sign you need to read this book written by  Mecca Woods -  Astrology for Yourself. It’s good book for beginners.   Its workbook exercises walk the reader through the fundamental basics, step by step, making astrology accessible and easy to learn. I know that creating an experimental film is an extreme challenge for me but I want to create something challenging. I would like to create something that will show people how close we are to each other thanks to the same zodiac sign. I want to show similarities and differences in four parts videos where I’ll show each zodiac sign type starting with water signs. It’s pretty easy for me since I am Scorpio and Scorpio is a water sign along with pisces and cancer. So to be familiar with the topic I started reading more books and articles about zodiac signs. I knew a lot before but It wasn’t enough to create a film. I read a few chapters from “Modern Astrology: Harness the Stars to Discover Your Soul’s True Purpose” by Louise Edington and  “The Secret Language of Astrology: The Illustrated Key to Unlocking the Secrets of the Stars” by Roy Gillett. Both of them helps you realize the qualities you have and people around you, what is your element, strong sides and the weak ones. In the next few weeks I will try to read more books and articles about the importance of water signs specifically. At the beginning I wanted to show each sign separately, first cancer then pisces and then scorpio, but my Teacher advised me to show their similarities more then their differences. He advised me to focus on water as an element. To show how powerful water can be, destructive and salvific at the same time. He was right! It’s the best way to show the connection between those signs rather than their disparateness.  “The Astrology of You and Me” by  Gary Goldschneider and “The Astrology Bible” by  Judy Hall are my next goals to find out more about water signs.
