The Michigan Department of Transportation, which is responsible for designated routes for hazardous materials, is holding a public comment period through May 27. Last month, a public hearing in Detroit drew mostly skepticism that allowing hazardous materials across the bridge could pose a major safety risk to the some 11,000 passenger vehicles and 7,400 commercial trucks that cross it daily. Hazardous materials, such as explosive gases and corrosive liquids, currently cross the Detroit River on a ferry operated by Canadian Maritime Transport Limited. Russia has a long history of selling arms to the Syrians and has a naval base in the country. But the delivery of the Russian S-300 missile batteries would represent a major qualitative advancement in Syria’s air defenses. The system is regarded as highly effective and would limit the ability of the United States and other nations to operate over Syrian airspace or impose a no-fly zone.
