202007~1017 kh:cc:net schedule adjustments
Tumblr media
The date is weird because I’ve been thinking about making this change for months. I procrastinated because I wouldn’t let my self make the change unless I make a post about it. I don't over think things as much anymore, so here it is.
Adding generality to specificty progression in schedule names
Originally the khccnet was supposed to have their main schedules end with 00 to represent their generality, but we ended up needing to use 0 to represent theoretical foundations because 9 sub schedules for each main schedule were not enough .
To be more in line with other classification systems, we will now go by X,X0,XX0 format to represent the progression generality --> specificity.
I orginially wanted every schedule name to have triple digits because I wanted avoid thinking about each schedule in a hiearchichal structure, butwe really needed those INFORMATION and ARTS main schedules demanded more sub schedules.
The avoidance of an explicit hiearchial schedule system may also encourage me to do away with higer level or general schedules altogether. This will constrain browsing to the knavehaven/index are.na page, and also cut down on channels.
Name Convention changes
More specific schedule names are not in the format of XX_NAME / XXX_NAME anymore. They are now just XXX NAME. Underscore was removed to achnowledge the technical advantages of using are.na. I originally included it to pay homage to old systems and their interopability, but I started seeing channel names have emojis in them. This made me want to acknowledge the medium this classification system was on more.
ARTS schedules change
700_ARTS or 7 ARTS used to have their sub schedules be organized by medium (i.e. image, text, sound, etc). Upon the change to start using digits 0,A,D,C in naming sub and sub subschedules ARTS can be expanded to fit areas that should stand on its own rather than be grouped together with others.
An example of this is how visual had so many sub sub schedules that were animation, graphic design, fashion, etc. where sound only had music. Now animation, graphic design, fashion, and music stand on their own and can be specified more due to the shift from sub sub schedules to sub schedules.

Surveying Palm Phone for Transitioning into Minimalism
About
I was recently tasked by @staoue to choose a phone for patrons who want to transition into an (almost) distraction free lifestyle.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Patrons were starting to feel too connected by social media feeds, notifications, and overall screentime. This lead to unease concerning disrupting the pace in productivity.
PRIMARY REQUIREMENTS
Run Pokemon GO
Maps
SMS texting app
An important part to our patron’s experience was being able to play Pokemon GO. This preference is due to the augmented reality systems that facilitate an outdoor lifestyle, as well as a majority of their life blogging revolving around taking pictures of in-game actors (Pokemon) being superimposed onto outdoor artifacts/landmarks. Most of their justification came from practicing a mindfulness lifestyle through engaging in physical space as well as maintaining in-game resources.
A phone that could run Google Maps is important in scenarios where the patron needs to drive to new/unfamiliar locations.
Despite wanting a distraction free experience, clients needs some mode of address or instant asynchronous communication with other entities (friends, family, employers, etc.). Client wants an invasive-less mobile experience rather than a strict “off-the-grid” one.
AUDIENCE
Programmers, Early 20s, Active Semi-outdoors lifestyle
NEEDS ASSESMENT
prevent prolonged phone use outside of essential functions (calling, texting, etc)
with the exception of navigation and Pokemon GO
patrons have tendency to install social media and novelty applications (tinder, instagram, etc.)
despite Pokemon Go having implied phone use while outdoors, patrons claim the adventure sync in-game feature mitigates this
current phone plan is Mint wireless, uses GSM radio towers for data
Minimalism is a keyword/fad that implies a distraction-free lifestyle. Searching this term is a driving force into researching an alternative experience.
SOLUTION
Replace patron’s current mobile phone with an essential, low-affordance “minimalist” smartphone experience accessible to patrons.
SECONDARY REQUIREMENTS [1]
Smartphone (android)
Restrictive user experience/interface
Used, cheap phone (~80-130 USD) [2]
GSM radios [[3]]
Client’s current phone plan only supports phones that use a GSM radio for data. In this case it is
RESEARCH
When looking for minimalist phones, we came across bodies of “minimalist phone” articles. [4]

IMPLEMENTATION - CHOSEN PHONE
The Palm Phone and the Unihertz Jelly tied met all the requirements. They are both charmingly small phones that are the size of a credit card, so multimedia consumption is not ideal. The small screen makes it difficult to type and interact with, which encourages less time spent on the phone. Smartphones with small form factors also have shorter battery life, requiring frugality of use on the patron.
The "Palm" name carries extreme sentimental value to the patron, so our team decided to go with the Palm phone (Palm companion). Upon research, we found out the Palm met the secondary requirements if it was bought second-hand. It is conventionally only accessible at ~350 usd with a present phone plan with verizon, but due to the companion nature of the phone it is unlocked by default. The phone is available ~99 usd refurbished on amazon as of 03-13-2020
Secondary Requirements are not so much requirements that come with a lower priority under primary ones, but are requirements that further articulate the solution implementation; somewhat like adjustments. These requirements are added in cases where more information about the client or technologies surfaces; or we can meet multiple profiles with one requirement (i.e. the “must be smartphone” requirements meets the ability to transmit and recieve locative data, making it an optimal Pokemon GO / Google Maps phone). ↩
knaveHaven strives for sustainability as well as affordability. “Refurbished” phone is a key word when searching for alternative technology. ↩
GSM radios are the parts of phones that communicate with cellphone towers. (i.e., GSM phone is used with T-mobile or AT&T phone towers, CDMA is verizon and sprint) Patron's phone plan is with Mint wireless, which uses T-mobile towers. ↩

The Palm phone is actually a ~350 usd add-on companion device to phones on a specific verizon plan. ↩
