clintasha week: day one → “Before I worked for S.H.I.E.L.D, I uh- well, I made a name for myself. I have a very specific skill set. I didn’t care who I used it for or on. I got on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar in a bad way. Agent Barton was sent to kill me, he made a different call.”

I grew up in a circus, Nat, of course I know how to cut down a tree, cook food and play the guitar. How else d'you think I became a SHIELD agent without having to go through the academy? It certainly wasn’t because I graduated with high honours from some science school.
(for clevervulpus because she’s awesome)

‘Black Widow & Hawkeye’ coming March 2024
Tumblr media
THE EYES OF A HAWK AND THE VENOM OF A WIDOW! Even when Black Widow and Hawkeye had no one to trust, they still had each other – even though their paths sometimes diverged. So when Clint Barton is accused of something that puts the U.S. and Madripoor at odds, a symbiote-equipped Natasha Romanoff thinks nothing of coming to his aid. But as echoes of their past ripple into the present, it will take all their faith in each other – and the lessons learned along the way – to protect their futures.

“Sit.” He shuts the door behind him and perches on the edge of the chair. Coulson regards him from behind his desk. “She’s not settling in,” he says bluntly. “She’s in holding. Mitchell is in medical with a busted lip and Stoker has a black eye. Something you care to share?”
“No, I haven’t seen her at all this morning. Are you sure-“
“She admitted to it. Attacked them unprovoked. I need you to figure this out. There are a lot of eyes on us right now. This can’t happen again.”
“What are you saying?”
“You need to convince the board that this was the right call.”
“Or what? They’ll kill her? Put her down like some kind of wild animal?”
“I didn’t say that.” Clint glares at him, and Coulson speaks again, his voice soft. “I think some time in the country might do her good. You could both use a break. Do you know a place?”
XXXXX
Gravel crunches under her sneakers as she steps out of the truck, taking in the old farmhouse. He grabs their bags from the back seat.
“Look. There are cows over there in that field.” She points, eyes a little brighter at the sight of the animals. He follows her gaze.
“Yep. That’s the nearest neighbor. Nice and quiet out here.” She moves to take her bag. He passes it over and leads them inside, giving her a brief tour of everything.
“Kind of unusual for a safe house, isn’t it?”
“It’s not a safe house.” She pauses, and he catches the tension in her stance. “It’s mine. Shield doesn’t know about it.”
“Why?” He shrugs, flicking through cover stories, then finally settles on the truth with a sigh.
“It was my house growing up. Back then it was a nightmare, but now it’s somewhere just for me to get away.”
“I’m sorry,” she says quietly, feeling like she ruined it.
“I wouldn’t have brought you here if I didn’t want to.”
XXXXX
He watches her from the kitchen as he stirs the pasta on the stove. They’ve been here three days and she’s finally started to relax. The porch is her favorite area, and it’s where she sits now, legs tucked under her and damp hair falling in curls around her shoulders. She reaches out to pick up a caterpillar.
The ring of his phone startles him.
“Barton.”
“Clint, we need to talk.” Coulson’s tone causes his stomach to drop. He sets the spoon aside and leans on the counter.
“What is it?”
“Stoker and Mitchell ambushed her. They pushed her into an empty office room and tried to-“
“Fuck-“
“They didn’t-“
“Fuck, Coulson, are you sure? Are you sure they didn’t?”
“I’m positive. She defended herself and left the room immediately. It’s all on video.” Outside Natasha lets the caterpillar crawl up her finger, laughing softly as it gets to the tip. “They’ve been fired, of course.”
“They deserve worse.”
“You still have two weeks. Call me with updates.” Clint huffs out a breath. She sets the caterpillar down in the grass.
XXXXX
“I promised you a safe space,” he says quietly. She tucks her fingers into the sleeves of her hoodie, watching the fireflies in the field.
“It’s not your fault.”
“I didn’t even ask.”
“I didn’t tell you.”
And they’re at a standstill. He swallows the lump in his throat. The silence drags on.
“I grew up here. After my parents died, my brother and I ran off to join the circus.”
“People don’t actually do that.”
“Seriously.” She cocks an eyebrow. “Got into a lot of bad shit back then. Coulson gave me a second chance and I was afraid to let myself have it. I fought him a lot. It was hard,” he admits. “And I wanted it to be different for you.”
She sips her tea, considering. They both watch as a deer emerges from the tree line. A fawn follows close behind.
“It is different though,” she says finally. “Because you didn’t have anyone you can trust. And I do.”

“Why don’t you just ask her out?”
“Who?”
“Well someone’s obviously on your mind.” He shifts, peering through the scope of the sniper rifle he’s holding. He could play it off as being focused on the mission, but he knows she would see right through the lie.
“She’s way out of my league. She would never give a guy like me a second look.”
“A guy like you?”
“You know.. clumsy, awkward, talks too much, hair never lays the right way, always spilling coffee on stuff.. on myself.” A steady heat creeps up into his cheeks as he talks.
“You’re not giving yourself enough credit.” He opens his mouth but before he can say anything she points. “There he is, got the shot?”
“Of course.” He pulls the trigger and they run into the night.
XXXXX
“You’re doing it again.”
“What?”
“Drooling over her and getting all distant.”
“I am not.” Absently, he pokes at his chocolate cake and she reaches over to steal a piece, licking icing from her lips. He takes a sip of coffee. His mouth is suddenly dry.
“What’s she like?”
“Amazing,” he replies, his gaze quickly turning out the window. “Beautiful. Smart. Funny.” She bites her lip, tapping her nails nervously on the table.
“What’s your favorite thing about her?”
“She’s a good person.” He meets her eyes as he says it. Instantly, her stomach drops. It’s definitely not her that he’s been thinking about, because no one with common sense would ever refer to her as a good person.
“She sounds nice,” she manages. Something flashes in his eyes, but it’s gone before she can decipher it.
“Yeah. She is.”
XXXXX
“Is it worse to get rejected, or be in love forever and keep it to yourself?” She shrugs, thoughtfully chewing a piece of popcorn.
“I’ve never been in love or rejected.” Disappointment at the answer shows briefly on his face, and she reaches for another handful of popcorn. “But I think if you want something you should go for it. Take the chance. Are you really afraid of her rejecting you?”
“I guess more of ruining what we have now.”
“But what if she feels the same way and what you have gets even better?”
“You’re just the relationship expert tonight.” She laughs, tossing him a piece of popcorn, which he easily catches in his mouth.
“I am probably the last person you should be asking for advice.”
“So no one special in your life?” A flush she can’t control creeps up in her cheeks. “There is! I knew it!”
“Shut up,” she warns, no threat behind the words. “It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t feel the same way.”
“How do you know?”
“I know.”
XXXXX
Why is his tie perpetually crooked? He tries, and fails, to straighten it. His hair isn’t cooperating either and he wets his hand, smoothing it down. It immediately sticks back up. He groans. With one last look in the mirror, he exits and heads towards the ballroom.
“Clint.” He spins around at the sound of her voice.
“Wow.”
“Pick your jaw off the floor,” she remarks with a soft laugh, stepping closer. He clears his throat.
“You um.. wow, you look beautiful.”
“Not sure if this is really my color.” His eyes rake over the navy blue dress that just dusts the floor. By her height, he knows she’s wearing heels, her breath warm on his neck as she moves to adjust his tie. “You really need to get a tie clip.”
“Yeah.. a tie clip.” She’s close, too close. He’s five seconds away from screwing this up.
“Come on, let’s go get a seat.” Pulling him through the crowd, all he can focus on is how sweaty his hand is in hers. Maybe she won’t notice. He makes it through dinner without any obvious blunders. She seems to be having a good time and he finds himself starting to relax.
“Do you want to dance?”
“You know how to dance?”
“I’m from the circus, remember? I’m actually a very good dancer.”
“I love dancing,” she admits, taking his offered hand. She fits against him perfectly. They dance to several slow songs, gradually moving closer, slower, his fingers brushing her hips.
“Hey Nat?”
“Hm?”
“I’m taking the chance.” She draws back to look at him and he suddenly can’t think of anything except how beautiful she is, how soft her lips are as he kisses her, how her hand curls into the back of his suit jacket to pull him closer. Breathless, she meets his eyes, biting back a smile.
“I was hoping it was me.”
“It’s always been you.”

I used to have nothing. And then I got this. This job. This family. And I was… I was better because of it.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, “golden joinery”), also known as kintsukuroi (金繕い, “golden repair”), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
