I had this best friend growing up who was really cool. I liked hanging out with him because he had an unlimited supply of alcohol and he was really nice to everyone, even if they were poor or had leprosy or something. He was kind of a flake, though. One time he disappeared for three whole days and nights and everyone was really worried but then he came back and was like, "Oh, I'm fine," and we were like "Jeez, man. What the heck?" Honestly, I thought that was pretty rude but everyone else was just glad that he was okay. I think there was some friend drama where one of his closest friends betrayed him all of a sudden. Right after they were both at a dinner party together. I guess it taught me to be careful about who you invite to your dinner parties. Probably should not invite anyone who will betray you. I don't really keep in touch with him a ton anymore but I think he's into woodworking now or something similar. I always thought he should be a doctor or something more helpful but apparently, woodworking is very important for a man with his skills. He also had some weird issues in his family and would always claim that his dad was super important but I never saw the guy. His mom was very nice. I value trust, openness, and loyalty a lot in friendship. I like it when I get to joke around, but also have deep conversations with my friends with zero judgment from each other. I'm just gonna talk about my friends that I’ve known the longest. We met in middle school and the three of us instantly. There definitely have been ups and downs but we’ve stayed friends throughout all these years. We all go to different colleges now, so it’s kind of a long distance friendship, but honestly, I feel like we’ve never been closer. We live our own lives, have our own friends, but still make time for each other. We make an do biweekly check ins with each other and just have our tea spilling, therapy sessions. The main thing I value in a friend is their arms and legs. I have nothing against disabled people, especially those with amputees. (I did used to train in a paralympic pool where I would watch people with limbs less than me swim faster than myself) The reason I value my friends’ limbs is because they can be very helpful to not only me but also themselves and others around them. To this day all of my friends have had all their limbs intact, even if some have broken or damaged them, they still possess their limbs. If we look at my direct line, Diane, Sean, Adam A, Christine, Charlize, Amy, they have all four of their limbs. The only one I would be wary of is Carmen. Though there is the saying that Carmen is not a truck, car, or a man, you can never trust someone too much. Cars do not have limbs and purely based on Carmen’s name; we can assume that she is partially a car. So, in some way or another Carmen is missing limbs. Sean on the other hand plays drums. He has the opposite problem, Sean has too many limbs. Every time I enter rehearsal for Video Game Orchestra, I see Sean in the back swinging his arms around in an intentional and yet chaotic manner. His drum sticks fly through the air as if they were extensions of his arms. On the side of his chair, Sean would occasionally switch his arm extensions into longer, shorter, bristly, round, even spiky. There is something Sean is hiding and one day I will find out what it is. His name says it all. All I will say is that it should be pronounced as seen not Shawn. This is a warning to all friends look out for arms and legs.

In a friendship, I value trust, communication, and comfortability a lot. My best friend at the moment is currently in New York pursuing nursing school. I met her in high school when we both joined dragonboat together. She says that our first ever interaction was when the school got a bomb threat and we decided to go to dragonboat practice together that day. It is quite funny that we also live in the same neighborhood in SF, which makes it super convenient for me to go visit her all the time. Even though we are in a long-distance friendship, one thing I really love about our dynamic is that we do not need to be in constant contact with each other. I would say the biggest things I value in a friendship would be honesty, reliability, and vulnerability. I would say all of these make a great recipe for a friend. Honesty is important because I need someone who can be upfront with me and tell me things. I don’t want them to have to hide from me just because they are too scared to tell me something. Reliability is important because I want to be able to lean on someone for help. I am already a very solo-oriented person so when I do ask someone for a favor I usually feel really bad. When someone does do me a favor it usually means a lot for me, especially if they went out of their way or did it just because they knew something was stressing me out. Finally, I think vulnerability is important so a friendship can reach a deeper level. I think it is important for friends to know of each other's struggles and achievements in order to get closer to one another. Knowing that I can be or that someone can be vulnerable lets me know that there is a sense of trust between us. As for my “best friend” I would say that I have 3. They’re all a little different but they each share the traits that I named above. It’s just that I can always go back or talk to them no matter how long it has been. It will always feel like we were separated for only a few weeks. But in more specifics, one of them is really emotional and is usually good with planning. Another one of them is a very chill and go-with-the-flow kind of person. Me and him like to mess up the emotional one a lot but we all went to the same elementary school/middle school so we share a lot of inside jokes and understand each other's humor. In friendship, I value when people can empathize and reach out, and if the relationship feels meaningful to continue. A lot of people are friends out of proximity, and those are super fun to have too. But if I know a friendship can last beyond that and can outlast years - that friendship would stay with me. I have a couple people I could consider "best friends" throughout my schooling experiences. The one I'll share a bit about is my friend, Darren. We met last year at Involvement Fair and I remembered him because we talked about joining all the same clubs back then - Aggie Studios, JASS, MK. He's a lot quieter, but we share the same passion for creating video edits regarding our lives. I sometimes would come over at midnight and blab at him until the sun rose. He's always down to do things with me, which helped my spontaneous nature last year, and his calm presence balanced my chaotic one. We went to Colorado on a whim together last summer, and he's letting me stay over at his new mansion this summer as well. One thing that made me realize how close we were, was when I was talking about how sad I was to lose touch with everyone when I graduate, and he told me not to worry, because he tends to lose touch with everyone, but that he won't lose touch with me.

I value making time for each other. I would say my best friend would be my sister. Even though we grew up hating each other and constantly fighting, during the pandemic we bonded a lot and resolved a lot of our misunderstandings. Since we grew up together, our values are very similar and have a lot of the same characteristics. Both of our love languages are quality time, so it’s really fun just hanging out together and doing errands together. The reason why I value making time in friendships is because she always tries to make time for me no matter what. Friends are something that is hard for me to define. For me, a friend is someone you hang out with regularly, not because of academic reasons.

But there's also a level of friendship which I consider, friends that you meet regularly by chance, friends who you frequently meet and hangout with, close friends, and really close friends.

I differentiate close friends and really close friends by how much I think they will be there for me. Will they be there to celebrate my happiest moments and will they be there to help me overcome my challenges during difficult times.

From these things, I found out that loyalty is what I search for, someone who will be there for me, because I will do the same.

My best friend is someone I "i hated". Thinking back about it, I don't remember hating her, but she did tell me that I hated her because I quote on quote "hated her stealing (friend_name)". Although I don't remember hating her, I do understand that if I hated her, I knew where it came from. I used to be a plague for children my age, it was really hard to be friends with someone since i was a really unique child. When I got my first friend, I really cherished her so much I got jealous. Then I guess I started hating people getting close to my first friend. I don't remember how we became friends but maybe it's because we kept hanging out together. We did sleepovers, went to shopping malls, amusement parks etc. She's such a sweet person, she didn't let my hatred for her affect her at all. Not everyone wants to be friends with someone who hates them. Ever since she became my friend, I've made a lot of friends which allowed me to be less socially awkward. She is one of the people i am thankful for being in my life, meeting her changed my life and i wouldn't be the person i am now if i have never met her.
