Chinese Deep in the Courtyard Gardens Hair stick Inspired by Ouyang Xiu

Inspired by my fav Ouyang Xiu poem 《蝶恋花·庭院深深深几许》 (Song dynasty) about a wife who waits in vain for her philandering husband’s return while trapped within her home.

庭院深深深几许，

杨柳堆烟，帘幕无重数。

玉勒雕鞍游冶处，楼高不见章台路。

雨横风狂三月暮，

门掩黄昏，无计留春住。

泪眼问花花不语，乱红飞过秋千去。

The exquisite golden birdcage has a teeny bird in it representing the confined and lonely life of the lady in the poem who bemoans her faded youth and straying husband. The butterfly is cloisonne and the green glass teardrops represent the willows of the garden while the clear crystal teardrop represents her tears as she tearfully asks the flowers for answers.

青玉案·元夕 by Xin Qiji (辛弃疾).

Southern Song poet and military leader Xin Qiji was renowned for the belligerent anti-Jurchen policies he supported at odds with other members of the current court. Though he was eventually forced to resign from his position as an official, in the interim, he improved his district’s irrigation system, implemented relocation measures for impoverished peasants, and trained his own troops. Throughout Xin’s life, his blatant ambition caused him to be viewed with suspicion. After his first removal, he spent ten years in Jiangxi writing ci poetry and produced all 620 of his poems that have survived to this day.

A lot of you may have noticed I’ve been posting a certain artist called ENOFNO recently and thus, here is a post dedicated to that artist :-).

ENOFO is an artist from Beijing, China. She specialises in a lot of watercolour illustrations and manhua art. She was born the 9th of May and studied art and design at  北京服装学院 (Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology). She produces a lot of ancient Chinese-inspired watercolour paintings (as shown above) depicting ancient Chinese women in various hanfu (汉服）(ranging from the early Han Dynasty style of the folded chest and wide sleeves to the chest-high skirt and sash from the Tang era), holding traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa (琵琶),  dizi (笛子) and guzheng (古筝), as well as other things like oil-paper umbrellas (油紙傘), paper lanterns (灯笼), and rigid fans ( 扇 ). Her paintings of ancient China captures the distinctive culture, scenery and style through the medium of watercolours.
