Ready Player One
-Leanne Angel Sajonia
Ready Player One is a movie that portrays a dystopian world which may become our own in the future. It shows how the future can be, the way the most people lived in poverty, there was a big gap between the rich and the poor, the ‘stacks’ was a densely populated cluster of cruddy trailers piled high atop each other and tied together by scaffolding, but despite that, instead of trying to escape their situation by working to earn money, they play in this game called OASIS, a virtual reality game where they can be who ever they want to be and do what ever they want to do. I think this shows how instead of facing the real world, with their situation, they’d rather escape and ignore it by playing OASIS, because that where they felt they belong, just like how today in our time, we try to use social media as an escape from everything that’s happening in the real world. In the movie they only put down the VR when they noticed that they’re utopia was going to be corrupted by a bad person who only wants the game for money, in the moment they realized that if they don’t help a fellow citizen, not just in OASIS, but in the real world, they’ll loose the only thing that kept them happy, so they put down they’re devices and saw what’s happening around them, and they worked together to keep intact their utopia. Just like how we are in our time, although we might be surround by media and information, we use this to work together and try to help our world be a better place.

“The Good and the Bad: How Social Media Affected Me as a Gen Z Individual”
-Leanne Angel Sajonia
Social media is one of the biggest trends, if not, then the biggest trend in my generation, as an individual included in Generation Z, social media has become a big part of my life, and I’m certain it isn’t just me, most Gen Z individual has any type of social media that they use or participate in. We use social media as a form of entertainment most of the time, but we also use it to gain some new friends and acquaintances, and although some people may think that we are addicted to social media or the internet, I think it’s more of the reason that we use social media as a gateway or a form of escape to what’s happening in the real world. For me social media has been something that affected my life greatly and it’ s something that has partially helped built the me today and keeps partially helping.
Social media has helped me meet different kinds of people, there are those who I met in games, applications, websites etc. In it I’ve met those who’ve become important persons in my life, I’ve met people that broke me, but I also met those who helped me build myself up again, I’ve met people whom I still talk to in this day despite being miles and miles away from each other, I’ve met people who decided I wasn’t worth their time and left me, but not just that. In social media I’ve also seen things I wish I could unseen, I’ve learned about stuffs I wish I never learned, wishing I never did, to stay ignorant of the cruel world that we stand on, but, even when I wished for those, It also helped me open up my eyes and try to learn more about what I’ve seen, whether it be good or bad, It helped acknowledge that this world isn’t the happy go lucky perfect world I kept making in my mind, and until now, I’m still learning to face it so maybe someday I can do something about it.

“The Setbacks of Piracy”
- Leanne Angel Sajonia
Piracy is a raging issue here in the Philippines, but not just in our country but also in other countries too, but here in the Philippines wherever store you go, there is a high chance of you seeing pirated cd’s and dvds, we might even have them in our own houses, we might even go to sites that can give us free access to those who originally needs payment and subscription, use them and don’t think much about it. But did you know that you’re buying/using stolen goods? How is it stolen you say? That pirated cd’s and dvd’s are stolen because they were taken without the consent of the creators, meaning they were taken illegally. Piracy refers to the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted content that is then sold at substantially lower prices in the market, and because of our desire to buy something cheap or use something for free, we set to use pirated products or sites instead of using the original or legal product/site.
Piracy is stealing royalties that should be given to the people that worked hard for it, it’s ridding them of the chance to earn their hard worked money and instead goes to the people that decided to steal their product. It’s no different from going inside a store to get something without paying for it then using it for profit, It’s an issue that is being ignored by most people because even they, are gaining from it, this is not just people stealing others works but even illegal streaming websites, websites that steals other peoples work and using them for profit is also piracy, maybe you think that piracy doesn’t affect you, but the people behind the movies, games, etc. that you watched and played illegally are highly affected, because they don’t get the money that they deserve for making it, the hard work they did all flushed down the toilet because you decided to use illegal website rather than those which gives the royalties to the producers and makers.

Media and Its Purpose
by; Leanne Angel Sajonia
Print media, the very first media in known existence in human history, uses paper as a medium for distribution. Broadcast media, the media that gave access to information for a wider range of audience, and practically changed the way we distribute information and news. New media, the newest type of media that arose in the advancement of technology, an interactive type of media that uses a two-way communication. All three use different medium but serves one purpose, to deliver news, and give information. These three may be brought on different generations but still remains to this day, all made by the sheer desire of humanity for convenience and innovation. And despite having made new ways of media, they still remain as our top sources of new and information, but not just that, it started from a media only used to distribute information into a platform where people can speak out their minds, their thoughts, decisions, and ideas.
Media will keep advancing as our technology does, but media would have never been as it is now without our traditional media, print media became the basis of accuracy for most media becoming after it, and with the information from printed media came the distribution of it in broadcast media and even in new media. These three are and will always be interrelated with each other as they all uses the others function to function its own. And even until now the functions of these media are being integrated to new and more technologically advance media, but even so, media will always be media, it’ll always have the same function, to be a source of information, to provide a platform for those who want to be heard, because media will always have a big impact on our lives, and our community, especially as we are now, where society revolves around media.

Humanities Hunger For Development
By: Leanne Angel Sajonia
Media has been changing all throughout the world as time passes by, media started as plain hollering of early humans as a way of expressing and delivering messages, then we evolved to using clay, carving on walls, to writing in papers, printing out books and magazines, newspapers, inventing the first ever electronic mass medium, the radio, followed by the television and now here we are in the age of information, where the world is connected through the internet, where information can be easily accessed by anyone, where social media is the biggest trend that exists.  Although the technology right now is great, imagine, 5 years from now, would everything still be the same? For me? I think that’s highly impossible, because we humans are always hungry for innovation, we yearn for something new, we’re never satisfied with what we have, we always look for something that’ll blow our minds.
So I think that media in the future will look something like the sci-fi movies we watch today, I mean right now we even have artificial intelligence like Alexa, so in the future we could have more robotics that can give us information we need, our news may not even be delivered by humans anymore, maybe televisions and radios won’t exist by then, we’ll have these devices that can have everything we need in a single click, and in those times, print media will probably cease to exist or maybe lessen more than it is now, because one thing I can see is us doing is inventing something that’ll help preserve the trees by not using papers anymore, cause that’s something we’re already trying to today even to this day. Maybe in that time, more and more people, and if possible, everyone will have access to the web because the internet and data will be given free to everybody, there’s just so much we can think or fantasize about what’ll happen in the future, and innovation and the hunger for development of humans is one of the things that’s drives me to think about this, because I believe that we are very resourceful, we are very smart creatures that no matter what happens, especially in this pandemic, that even if our economy shuts down, we’ll still find a way to be able to get back up again.

“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
Information Literacy is relevant now in this era more than ever, Social era is an era of connection, connecting with people, things and ideas, and in connecting with anything or with anyone obligates understanding the object or the person, and with that, information is a must. Information literacy helps to gain the skill of perception and understanding the things around us. Communication is a principal medium used for connectivity, but for a communication to be successful, one must find the right and exact information to be said. An information literate individual must first listen properly to the person, or read properly the text before giving out his or her own conclusion. There is a saying that “The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand, we listen to reply” so that’s why before trying to comment on a text you must first read it properly and look more into it and try to understand it.   Information is something that can be easily accessed now by anyone, information is used as a way for us to communicate with each other, even a simple yes or no is already an information given to us by someone, but with this in mind, we must not abuse the fact that we have the power to easily spread out information and start spreading rumors or false news, because that can cause more damage than you thought. To be a responsible holder of information, and an information literate individual, we must be always reflecting on our actions, not just once, twice, or thrice, as my teacher would say, think about it many many times, think about how it’ll affect others and how it may affect you yourself. This is why I think Information literacy is much of a necessity in the current social era.

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
Tumblr media
The media has been long existing as one of the tools the government use for spreading out information about the recent happenings in the country, the love-hate relationship of the media and government isn’t something unfamiliar, there are a lot of cases where the media and the government has not gotten along well, but media doesn’t only serve as a tool for the government but also for the citizens to use, to cry out their situations to be heard by the ones above our league, media is also a tool for people to speak out their minds, emotional thoughts, everyday thoughts, or thoughts about the government. Although, that was before the R.A 11479 also known as the “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020”, came about. This law gave power to the government to name someone a terrorist if they disagree or fought against them.  Posts, news and articles talking about the said republic act spread like wildfire on the web, on different platforms such as Facebook and twitter. Many went against the act as they saw it as a threat in the countries democracy and the freedom of speech of everyone.
This is what I decided to draw as my editorial cartoon because from what I could see, this depicts how the media, citizens and government is right now. Right now despite being in a state where going outside is a bigger threat to our lives more than ever, being caused by the Covid-19, the virus isn’t the only thing we worry about. You can see how there is a telescope with an eye which acts as the government watching over everything that is being written or reported by the media, you can also see a panel where people are liking and reacting positively to posts or news that doesn’t go against the government, while those who try to speak out against them or call them out are being bashed and hated. I think that shows how the government controls its people by showing them the brighter side of the picture rather than to show them the harsh truth. There is also a part where there is a symbol of democracy slightly hidden behind the flag of the Philippines, which for me, symbolizes the fact that democracy is slowly being hidden to be replaced by autocracy.

“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual”
Tumblr media
Media literacy is being able to critique and evaluate a certain post, news etc. and the message behind it logically and intellectually, it mostly focuses on the mass media where society is basically orbiting around. Information literacy is the ability to evaluate, find and use information and its sources in situations it requires, it’s an essential in news making, research and any academic works.
The value of being a media and information literate individual is not just so we can post and look ‘smart’ in any platform, but also to use our ability to teach others how they can avoid posting or sharing any information that could be false, unethical etc. As a student and as a person who lives in a society where information can be accessed by anyone and where media and technology is basically where society revolves in, I know that media and information is an essential when it comes to our education and success in the real world, that’s why learning how to be literate in such manner is a great advantage, also to avoid getting into mess that I really don’t want to clean or participate in.
