This made things go a bit smoothly but then in 1993 in San Francisco, a man killed 9 people in the downtown law office led to a complete ban on assault weapons. In 1994, it was essential for all gun buyers to pass a written test, watch videos or take a proper gun course before getting a gun legally. In the coming years, these laws were modified and tweaked as per the requirements, with the gun waiting period reduced to ten days, which is still the current waiting time period. The assault weapons ban was further boosted with rules like no 10+ magazines, one hand gun in a month, all first-time buyers must pass an exam given by the local law enforcement agencies.
But in 2015, another mass shooting in San Bernardino, where 14 were killed by a couple who went out on a rampage made the law enforcement agency again question the laws and the safety of the citizens. In 2016, ammunition background checks were also made essential, no guns were to be sent by mail, the gun owner had to go to a licensed dealer and pick up the gun from the vendor. In 2017, once again a shooting incident happened in Tehama which was done with self-assembled guns and in 2018, a shooter killed 13 innocent people in a Thousand Oaks bar. In 2019, mass shootings were again witnessed at Gilroy Garlic Festival and Saugus High School.
Current Rules and Regulations in the State of California
As of now, there has been a strong conflict going on between the government and the gun lobby. Governor Newsom wants to enforce the law of background checks for purchasing and attaining ammunition along with a complete ban on high magazine capacity. But a federal judge has called both these rules and laws unconstitutional. While the governor wants to make things even harder and complicated for gun owners, the gun advocates and producers want ease of laws so that millions of dollars can be added to their wealth.
Conclusion
The general perception is that, the stricter the laws are the fewer the incidents and deaths will be. Especially if the guns are not easily available to convicted persons or the people with unpredictability certainly leads to less crimes with guns.
