My plan was to walk over there, but too much rain had fallen, and everything had turned into puddles. Some unfamiliar loud sounds could be heard in the field behind me, perhaps from large birds, like cranes, but I couldn’t spot them. I came here very early to catch the sunrise, but it was so overcast that clouds couldn’t be distinguished from mist. This is the view looking straight into the sun. I think, because yesterday it went down on the other side...

Lately I'm drawn to the events happening in the sky. I guess the scale difference is fascinating. A small creature like myself, compared to those immense masses of molecules, the clouds, the atmosphere, the sun; ultimately enabling us. Circling around that enormous star, while making it appear as if it’s the other way around. It’s not a very casual thing. Yet, it’s everyday life...

They appeared from nowhere. Since a few weeks there’s storks all around us. While we are dealing with the short days of winter, these birds are enjoying the sun in Africa. Now, they’re back without any announcement upfront. Imagine the journey they had to undertake to fly all the way over here. 7 or 8 hours a day…
The painting is of a stork whom I had a staring contest with. I didn’t plan to win, but I did anyway. I guess my curiosity didn’t exactly match up with the bird’s...

The night is less bright than the day, sure. But, your emotional state doesn’t have to follow the same path. Being outside during nighttime, and only being accompanied with some light from the moon, there’s so much subtleties that you can discover. So subtle, that your imagination has to be turned on as well. Yet so subtle, that you’re not even realizing that your imagination has joined in. The stillness, heightening your senses, trying to distinct the tiny branches that you still might see in front of the soft bluish glow in the air. While you’re listening to the soft noises of the rest of the world sleeping, here and there a crackling sound is making sure you stay alert. You keep watching, and you keep merging more and more with the curious colors and shapes of the dark…

The basis for this painting lies in the real world, however, it would be impossible to paint the real brightness of sunrise. A painting can never give light... The intensity of light coming from the sun is many times higher, when compared to the clouds and surrounding atmosphere. Complementary colors are used here. Blue versus orange, and yellow versus purple. When mixed together they create black, but next to each other they’re perceived to be extra bright. Rather than painting everything that is supposed to be there, here’s an illusion of sunrise.

In general I’m an early bird. Waking up somewhere between 4 and 7 o’clock. But it’s no punishment, because there’s painting and exploring to do. This time my mind was set on capturing a sunrise, for which I had a nice spot in mind. To get there I had to go through a forestry area in the twilight. Since these days there might be wolves out there, my camera was ready for an encounter. But this also comes with some adrenaline of course. Which became apparent, when in all the silence, a woodcock flew away with a lot of noise, just in front of me! Other encounters that morning included a short-eared owl, and a roe deer running through the field. Nice. You go out for a piece of sky, but there’s always bonus material...
The painting you see is of the sky that morning just after sunrise, with the view leaning towards the north.

It's kind of bizarre how everything changes color constantly. It goes gradually, so no one's really shocked. But if you put images of it right next to each other, for example a sunrise and an overcast afternoon, it almost doesn't look trustworthy. It can't be the same place, right?
Last year around January I had been painting outside almost every day, and these were very moist grey times. So, lots of subdued, grayish paintings. But I also caught a sunrise in between, with those bright magenta moments. In the series it felt so out of place. I constantly felt the urge to reject that one. But had no valid reason, apart from my subjective feelings. After two months of grayish works, I brought in lots of colors and rejected the grays it seemed. Until that became too much as well, and muted colors were back. There is a moral to the story probably, but I seem to keep forgetting it, so I just keep painting… And, revisited a new sunrise…
