A wonderful way to teach your students and children about kindness, empathy and friendship, is with Philip C. Stead’s picture book, Samson in the Snow.  Samson is a woolly mammoth who loves the color yellow and tends to his dandelion patch.  When a little red bird comes along and asks him for some of the flowers, for a friend who is having a bad day, Samson obliges.  After napping, Samson wakes up in a snowstorm.  Feeling worried, he starts to look for his bird friend, meets a mouse who has been having a bad day, and together they find the bird and take shelter in a cave.  We realize by the end of the story that they 3 new friends are inter-connected.

Do you love a beautiful and poignant picture book that you can read over and over, and always see something new within its pages?  This brand new book by author Julia Denos and illustrator E.B. Goodale does just that.  These two Boston locals took what was familiar, and created a magical version of life there, and the comforts of coming home. OK, I might be a little biased, as a Boston girl myself, but I strongly feel that each reader who takes a walk through these pages will feel a connection to their own home.  Those feelings of comfort that reside in the heart will be brought to the surface by this picture book called “Windows.”

Building a collection that is filled with Early Chapter Book Series has proved to be essential to getting our younger readers excited about moving forward with content, and our experienced readers, who might have time restraints, an opportunity to find something quick and fun to keep their reading skills in tact.  This current series by Jordan Quinn called “The Kingdom of Wrenly” flies off our shelves and is always in demand by students in grades 2-5.

Let’s Read!
As an Elementary School Librarian, my focus is to find a way to have all my students enjoy reading, whether it be as a leisure activity or for information gathering.  It’s not always easy to find something for the reluctant reader, the struggling reader, or the kid who is already busy with after school activities.  I hope to offer some recommendations that will help you get your students or children loving books!
