I still think it’s something that probably, like, Spielberg coincided with the latchkey generation, {…} both parents are going to work and kids are coming home with a key around their neck and making their own dinner and watching TV. There’s a distance and isolation there, kids being raised on television, that the sci-fi, the post-Spielberg kind of Close Encounters version of alien abduction mythology kind of sprang up. And I wonder how much of its resonance also has to do with a generation of people who are more disaffected and therefore want to create situations in which they are special without having to engage something that’s a little more abraded or numb inside them which is just good old fashioned unconditional love and intimacy and things. Whereas maybe previous decades’ mythology would be more driven by ethos. Alien abduction mythology is a way to have someone come into your home, grab you, look at you as an inferior being, regard you coldly, but all in all you’ve had a wonderful adventure. You have been deemed special, but in a way that doesn’t violate your inherent cynical understanding that you are a piece of shit.
Dan Harmon on the X-Files Files, episode 37 S3E20 Jose Chung’s From Outer Space (via havingchanged)
