Erin Morgenstern’s Night Circus is the MOST MAGICAL NOVEL EVER.

Neil Gaiman’s books.  Like, all of them.  Any of them.  That man knows magic.

For witchcraft humor and understanding of witches: Terry Pratchett’s witch-centered Discworld novels.

Diana Wynne Jones’ books on witchcraft and folk magic, including the Chrestomanci books, are excellent.

A Rumor of Gems by Ellen Steiber is excellent for anyone trying to pick up lithomancy.

The Paper Magician series by Charlie Holmberg is really good too!  Great ideas for spellcasting and learning materials-based magic.

Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy is very well-researched and lovely, and everyone should read it.

Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Ghostlight series was pretty good for teaching basic 70′s occultism (don’t bitch at me about MZB, I don’t care).

The Dresden Files are great for urban adaptation of various bits of European fairy tale folklore.

Circle of Three, the novels by Isobel Bird (a pseudonym for Michael Thomas Ford, who is a friend of mine) is excellent for teens trying to learn about late 90′s/early millennial Wicca.  Cate Tiernan (pen name of Gabrielle Charbonnet) also wrote the Sweep series during the same time period, and they were fun for a different, more theatrical, Twilight-esque kind of reason.  In fact, I liked them infinitely better than Twilight, because Gabrielle can actually write, even if the storylines were badly mismanaged near the end of the series (and the story itself was absolutely ridiculous teen drama).

I know this is corny, but several World of Darkness novels and sourcebook excerpts were fantastic at illustrating what it’s like to be a magical person.  My absolute favorite old WoD novel is Penny Dreadful, by Kevin Andrew Murphy, and of course Penny’s earlier two-part story from Truth Until Paradox, Silver Nutmeg, Golden Pear, and Grim Reminders.  Penny is my hero.

Iron Druid by Kevin Hearne is really good!  So is Twenty-Sided Sorceress by Annie Bellet, and Michael R. Underwood’s Geekomancy.  Those are fun, and also informative and innovative in how they portray magical theory.

And of course, any fiction written by an occult author like Silver Ravenwolf or Ed Fitch or M.R. Sellars is going to be excellent at teaching you how they see magic and how they feel the world works.  I particularly like Silver’s adult novels, Beneath a Mountain Moon and Murder at Witches’ Bluff.

That’s a good starter for witchcraft!  I didn’t really get into books about faerie lore, or books about specific cultures or religions, or books about historical magic, or books about witches that don’t really illustrate how they did their magic, or books about magic users who are utterly not at all the same as real magic but are still super fun… 

Seriously, magic in fiction is one of my favorite subjects.  I’d love to do a Discord chat about that with some of my followers sometime.

MULLED CIDER FOR SAMHAIN

With Samhain coming up in a couple weeks I wanted to share one of my favorite recipes for the season. Do you have any special drinks or meals that you like to make for Samhain? Reblog & share your favorite Samhain recipe. 🎃

Ingredients

1 gallon apple cider 3 Granny Smith apples 1 orange 1 T. allspice berries 5-7 cinnamon sticks ½ cup fresh cranberries ½ cup sugar (optional)

Instructions - Pour the apple cider into a large pot over medium-high heat. - Dice up the apples and toss them into the cider. - Peel the rind off the orange in large pieces and toss them in. - Add the allspice berries, the cinnamon sticks, and the cranberries. - Add the sugar and stir it around to dissolve. - Bring the mixture to a low boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

A Collection of Witch Tips Masterpost

Note: These are a collection of tips found in various places on the internet and through close friends of mine. While some of these are my own, they do not all belong to me. Most of these did not include a credited author, so I have not included them.

•Mix together Salt and Pepper and sprinkle to prevent trespassing •Add coffee to a bath to break a curse •Place sachets of dried rosemary around the home for protection •Sprinkle around garlic powder to keep evil at bay •Add lime to your water for protection •Carry a clove with you for courage •Mint attracts business - try hanging a sprig above the door to your private workspace •Place a sprig of thyme under your pillow to bring about prophetic dreams •Hang a braid of garlic in a sickroom to trap the negative energies •Put a vial of rosemary water in a sickroom to promote healing •Stash an onion beneath a sickbed to soak up wandering negative and harmful energies •Seaweed can be used to ward off evil spirits •Scatter dried or fresh chilli peppers to break a curse •Throwing rice into the air promotes rain •Lilacs rid unwanted spirits •Black Obsidian is great for scrying •Stitch sigils into clothes, blankets, etc •Too Cold outside to storm call? Storm calling / weather magick will work just fine when facing your window and looking out •When showering, imagine all the impurities and negativity being washed off you by the water, and down into the drain •The Fae enjoy sweets as offerings the most •Wear your pendulum as a necklace when on the go •Use amethyst crystals to recharge your energies. Left Hand - Out with the old. Right hand - In with the New. •Soups and stews not only are great for healing the body, but they have many magickal properties too! •Himalayan pink salt can get seriously expensive. Unless you plan on eating it, buy Himalayan Pink Bath Salts. They’re so much cheaper and you can buy them in even larger bags. •Use coffee filters and elastic bands to make the perfect bath bags •Use sea salt when sweeping the floor to soak up the negative energies and cleanse your home •Store your Black Salt in a dark glass jar, away from sunlight.

How to Read Menstrual Blood

There are two different ways to read menstrual blood. The moon phase you start in, and how heavily you bleed.

The Moon Phase

This tells you what’s to come in the future.

Waning: something is coming to a close now, something is ending. You must let go of or banish something from your life. Beware of curses, ill-wishing* (wishing something bad to happen to someone so bad that it actually happens), and troublesome spirits. Keep rosemary and amethyst by your bedside to ward nightmares.

Waxing: now is the time to work tworads your goals. Make plans for the future. Divination is your best friend right now. Pray to your goddess and ask for assistance and for Her to keep you on the right path. Keep an eye out for thieves and liars. Sprinkle thyme in front of your front door to ward off gossip and lies.

New Moon: cleanse, cleanse, cleanse. Now is the time to renew and a fresh start. Burn that picture of you and your ex, tear up that college rejection letter, let go of the past. Draw in healing and protection to you, put up wards and keep lavender on your pocket.

Full Moon: now is the time for the strongest of magic. You may soon get a sign from a goddess, a new job, a new love, a speacil dream, or something you’ve been chasing for a while. You may even have a spiritual awakening. Put up wards against curses, evil spirits and the like, and ask your goddess for protection and luck

Your Flow

Spotty: you are uneasy, insecure and unsure of yourself. You need to work on confidence and self love.

Back and Forth: *bounces in between heavy and light* you are going through a great change. Now is the time to let go and let the forces that be do what they need to.

Heavy: you need to heal. You have been through a lot of pain, and you need desperately to heal. Reach out to others, to your goddess, and possibly professionals.

Light: you are starting a new, and learning to love yourself, coming into your power, but you’re not quite there yet.

Steady: you are balanced and in control. You are currently stable and calm.

Today I ground too much coffee at work and they let me take the grounds home. Knowing that Mabon is soon approaching on the 21st, I decided to do some easy magic in preparation! I unfortunately will be very busy that week house and babysitting so celebrating/participating may be very minimal, with my extra coffee I decided it's only natural to make some coffee sugar scrubs so I can banish unwanted energy and invigorate my week with cozy fall energy!

I will be listing below two seperate recipes I made. One is a Mabon corresponding sugar coffee scrub. The second is a Psychic Protection sugar coffee scrub, best for protecting yourself from unwanted energy.

These scrubs are great for Mabon or Samhain! The ingredients are safe for the skin during any bath or shower ritual, you can even slice apples crosswise to reveal their hidden pentacle and add to your baths as well to enhance your experience and add a witchy mood!

MABON SUGAR COFFEE SCRUB

1 1/2 cups of sugar- to attract sweet things to you

1/2 cup of olive oil- to ensure your Mabon and Autumn Equinox is blessed with good intent

1 tbs of ground coffee (you can use dry or wet, I used dry dark roast coffee)- to break curses and ground you.

Small handful of ground whole cloves- for friendship

1 tsp of Honey- for beauty and self love

1 Ground whole cinnamon stick- corresponding with Wednesday, and to represent bonfires of fall.

10 drops of skin and body safe pumpkin spice essential oil (I was heavy handed because who doesn't love pumpkin?)- for wishes being granted

10 drops of skin and body safe orange essential oil- for prosperity

A sprinkle of sea salt - for protection

PSYCHIC PROTECTION SUGAR COFFEE SCRUB

1 1/2 cups of sugar- to attract sweet things to you

3/4 cup of olive oil- to anoint/and bless yourself.

3/4 cup of liquid coconut oil- corresponding to the moon and purification.

1 tbs of ground coffee (you can use dry or wet, I used dry dark roast coffee)- to break curses and ground you, also aids in divination.

Small handful of ground whole cloves- for friendship

1 tsp of Honey- for beauty and self love

1 Ground whole cinnamon stick- corresponding with Wednesday, and to represent bonfires of fall.

1 tbs of lavender buds- divination clarity, protection, and cleansing

1 tbs of dried rose petals- psychic power and divination

10 drops of rosemary essential oil that's safe for skin and body- healing, power, and protection.

10 drops of rose essential oil that's safe for skin and body

A sprinkle of sea salt- for protection

Crush the whole cloves/cinnamon in a mortar pedestal until fine, combine with all dry ingredients in a medium to large bowl and give a good stir. Stir with your intent in mind. You can transform these into very protective or courage invoking scrubs.

Next add in your oil and honey, stir in slowly, making sure to scrape the sides and get all the sugar mixture well incorporated. Stir counter clockwise to banish evil spirits or negativity, stir clockwise to draw in good energy and happiness toward you. Invision it and see it happening in real time.

As Aggie Cromwell in Halloweentown says, "Magic is really very simple, all you've got to do is want something and then let yourself have it!"

Spoon into a mason jar and seal the lid tight. This also makes great gifts for others, I'm giving one to my mother as her birthday ends on Mabon and she loves PSL/Fall.
