“How to pull right”

A series of advice for tanks from a very tired healer.

1. Before pulling the 1st pack > GAUGING

Wait for the buffs.

While you wait, check the classes in party, then check the gear.

If the healer has a low ilvl > ask if it’s ok to pull more than 1 pack.

If you have only melees or low ilvl DPS > Pull 1 pack first, you can always adjust and pull more later if the group is good.

2. While pulling several packs of mobs > PREPARING

Aggro the mobs as you go so the healer can heal you as soon as you’re done pulling or while you’re pulling without taking the aggro.

If the pull requires you to walk a long distance or to take a lot of damages due to a particularly strong mob, use a small CD as you pull.

Friendly reminder : You cannot parry or block on your back. While you’re pulling you’re -always- taking unmitigated damages.

If you finish your pull with less than 30% of your HP and no CD up, you’re doing it wrong. The healer will either not be able to keep you up or will have to use a big heal with big cool down + huge aggro value and the risk for them to have some mobs on their face and then to be decast or killed is high.

3. While the mobs are being killed > MITIGATING

Use your first CD right as you pull the last pack of mob, don’t wait to have aggro several times before using one.

Place all the mobs in front of yourself so you can parry and block the attacks.

Use your BIG CDs when you’re just done pulling and there are many mobs to tank. Taking less damages and receiving bigger heals will help your healer in their job.

Use your SMALL CDs when you have few mobs on yourself and / or when you are switching in DPS stance.

Do not use any CD when there are 1 or 2 mobs left unless they hit hard.

Do not switch in DPS stance when you have a lot of mobs on yourself.

4. After killing the 1st set of mobs > ADJUSTING

If it took too long to kill those mobs : Take. Less. Mobs.

If the healer asks you to take less mobs or was completely out of mana at the end of the pack while not DPSing : Take. Less. Mobs.

If you didn’t feel comfortable, was stressed by a huge pack or took too much damages overall : Take. Less. Mobs.

If you’re out of CDs and know that you won’t have any up for the next set of mobs : Take. Less. Mobs.

If everything went ok : Keep it up !

If you thought that the group would be bad but they murdered the pack of mobs : Take more mobs, but make sure to adjust again if this time it was too much !
