AFRO GODS!, FW 2019 - SS 2020.

This style was inspired by Ikaggen. Ikaggen or Cagn as he is also called, is the Creator God of the San people of what is now South Africa. The San are among the oldest people on the Mother Continent and this very important detail was always on my mind throughout the research. Many conflicting stories about this particular god exist and that made the research richer and more fun than expected. To the San Ikaggen is the creator of ALL things, for them he is within everything and everywhere.

Ikaggen is viewed as destructive but also creative... a trickster as well as a benevolent god. He is a shapeshifter and takes the form of several animals including the caterpillar, mantis, lion, bull, snake, etc. Many of the stories about Ikaggen feature wild animals as the main characters. One of the sons of Ikaggen is himself an eland antelope and the adopted daughter of Ikaggen and his wife,ǀHúnntuǃattǃatte̥n, is a porcupine.

The San god is very well documented and I've only touched on the surface because the stories are all pretty detailed and I don't want to lose any of it in translation but if you are interested go find out... You will not be disappointed... especially if you are a nature lover!

The creations of Winifred Mason can be dated back to the early 1940's, she is said to be the first working jewelry designer of African descent in the US although I am sure many other jewelers of African descent were creating well before her. Mason furnished 5th. Avenue boutiques and famous department stores with her unique one of a kind jewelry that were primarily made in copper. Mega famous entertainers of the period donned her designs and she was featured in many of the prominent periodicals of her time. I personally love the fact that her distinctive creations were one-off. Check her out to see examples of her outstanding work.

On the whole we have solvedthe problem of selecting colors to complement our particular complexions and are toning down the flamboyance of which we are often accused.”

I wonder Why would she say something like that? I guess she/we were/are #EXTRA. hahahhaha... I mean, being accused of flamboyance? This quote reminds me of my internships and always being accused of TRYING to do "THAT" kind of "stuff" when in reality, I was doing what comes naturally to ME, creative wise. I imagine it has always been this way. AND, if that is the case the lesson here is, ALWAYS do YOU since the tasteless and incapable will habitually ridicule you for navigating your creative lane. 😒🤬😁.
