There’s definitely a way that short stocky gymnasts get pigeonholed into a “powerful but not artistic” stereotype but I think a lot of it is upstream of fans and judges. It’s coming from coaches and choreographers.
Like, fans saw Claudia Fragapane and correctly recognized that she was not especially graceful. It’s not that they weren’t being charitable (well, there was some nastiness but that wasn’t all of it), it’s that she actually had bad choreo, no flexibility and poor dance foundations.
In contrast, I have never seen Flavia Saraiva’s artistry doubted in my years of being a fan, even though she’s not tall and thin.
I think the issue is that a lot of coaches are not willing to put time into dance foundations for their powerhouse gymnasts, partially due to their own biases, and partially because they can get enough difficulty from their four tumbling passes that artistry deductions don’t matter. Artistry and pretty leaps is a backup if chucking a silivas doesn’t work out. And because of physics, chucking a silivas is easier if you have a shorter moment arm. Add in some poor choreography decisions and they’re set up to fail.

so far not loving the webb and dude with webb commentary. They say a lot of things, but they don't tell me anything I don't already know, which is annoying.

I feel like abby lee miller was like. really meant to choreograph beam in this quad tbh lmao ? like some of the Moments in her dance choreo are weird but interesting and pretty* and musical and as much as she’s a loser I feel like she would construct beam routines with zero artistry deductions

Ellie black has at various times in her career been a vault specialist, a floor specialist, a beam specialist and finally a bars specialist. The last one being the most surprising. She always has a standout event, but year on year she might decide to switch which one it is.
I get that she is a strong all-around athlete, but this thing where her strongest event is simply super fluid (and her stand out events always do stand out) is bizarre

I actually think that some people do automatically think of slimmer gymnasts as more artistic but to imply that someone might think that komova is one of the greatest only because she is skinny? Be for fucking real please

I’m sorry but people acting like suni not being given any international assignments is noteworthy is crazy to me. (assuming these same people have been paying attention to the happenings of the last calendar year)
If you’re a fan I get why you’re upset but unless you’re like delusional stan level I truly don’t get why u might be surprised lmao…?

I keep trying to like Kayla dicellos gymnastics like I really try. But it’s just so very Nothing to me. There’s no flair, no interesting skills or anything she does particularly well. Nothing she does is memorable to me.

Maddie Jones (ARK) quickly becoming my favorite NCAA gymnast: clean technique, pretty movement quality, a nice balance of power and control, and now 2 consecutive well-choreographed floor routines. Hope her star continues to rise, can't wait to see her put it all together.

Ok like I understand that it’s their last season (for Kiya definitely and for Haleigh maybe 👀) but why do they need to be doing AA basically every week? You have a whole ass platoon of a roster and AA doesn’t mean anything in regular season other than pithy dual meet “titles.” which is a stat barely anybody gives a fuck about. You have lineups like 8-gymnasts deep at LEAST, on every event, use the rookies in the front half of the season if you’re going to use them at all??? I really don’t get the reasoning behind these choices tbh especially since we know LSU has a handful of healthy “alternates” who could really use competition experience and could go in 3rd/4th in lineups. Why are you exhausting them, haleigh in particular, in the early-mid season and risking injury in the process…? idk just 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Same, but I'm loving Leanne's success. She didn't start out as a favorite for me; I liked her cleanness but found her a bit stiff and cookie-cutter/good at most things but not a standout/the best at any. She's come a long way though, and I also vibe with the more serious, reserved personality; the NCAA gym world (and the real world to tbh) acts like having a big, vocal, expressive personality and putting it all out there 100% is key to success, but Leanne is such a boss.
the hate i have in my heart for florida for little to no reason only grows each season
