5 Packing And Travel Tips For Your Teen’s Time Away With The Road Less Traveled
So, your teen has enrolled on one of our summer travel and service programs at The Road Less Traveled (RLT), and excitement and energy for their summer trip is at an all time high! But are you aware of what steps you need to take to prepare and pack properly for the program?
Knowing what gear to bring along is one of the essential elements of traveling for teens. Below, we have set out some of the most crucial things to bear in mind and follow as you pack.
1. Closely follow the provided packing list
For first time travelers, it can be hard to know what to bring, and what should stay at home. Here at RLT we try to make it as easy for students and parents as possible, by providing a packing list specific to each trip.
You will receive this packing list in your CampInTouch account – so when you do, make sure to closely follow it. This list focuses on essentials, including items that might be difficult, or even impossible, to obtain while your teen is participating in the program. There is even a checklist feature, so it's easy to tick off all items you have ready.
2. Double check you have the most important items
This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised by how frequently traveling teens forget critically important items such as identification, medication, eye glasses, and passports.
So, you should double check that your teen is carrying such essentials in their daypack, to take with them on the plane. The likes of toiletries, a water bottle, and a fleece are also sensible “carry on” items, bearing in mind potential cancellations and delays.
3. Make sure baggage is clearly labeled
All bags and luggage that your child brings with them will need to be clearly labeled with the destination point for the trip’s outgoing leg. For the return trip, your home address should be used.
We would also urge you to indelibly mark your home address on the pack and duffel, prior to your teen departing for their journey.
4. Avoid packing unnecessary Items and tech devices
We take great pride in our travel programs being tech-free experiences. Devices such as smartwatches, tablets, and e-readers are best left at home. Similarly, avoid packing any unnecessary items. Large fans, bath robes, oversized pillows and inflatable chairs are all cool, but not the easiest to travel with!
5. Ensure your child has enough spending money
Although the tuition for our summer travel programs cover almost everything – one of the most important teen travel tips is to ensure your child does have some of their own spending money with them. At least $100 for each week of the program is a good “guideline” amount. This is helpful for postcards, souvenirs or snacks on those airport days.

What is meant by the term ‘intermodal freight’?
The quick and straightforward way of defining the term “intermodal freight”, is that it refers to the transportation of goods from one location to another, using more than one mode – or method – of transport.

By contrast, with intermodal freight, separate contracts exist for each individual leg of the journey. Shippers having separate contracts with different carriers means there is ultimately more than one entity responsible for the given cargo’s successful delivery.

If you are a parent or guardian of a teen who is considering joining a summer program with The Road Less Traveled, you might understandably wonder whether your child is the kind of person who would thrive on one of our summer trips. After all, you will want to be sure that your child will fit in well with their fellow travelers during their time away from home.
It would be easy to imagine that The Road Less Traveled trips might only appeal to a very specific “type” of teen. You might assume that our summer programs are best suited to someone who has lots of previous experience of taking on outdoor wilderness adventures or maybe already has a long list of service hours and experience there. But that's not the case!
Our summer trips aren’t only for one ‘kind’ of teen!
The question of what “kind” of teen thrives on our summer travel programs, has a more nuanced answer than the above might indicate. In truth, our student adventure and service trips attract a broad variety of participants. We have city kids, outdoorsy kids, first time travelers, seasoned RLT alum, kids who have never done service before, through to kids who want to challenge themselves on bigger and more exciting adventures then their previous camp experiences.
In terms of interests, some kids may be big into sports, some love volunteering, some are foodies, some love history and culture, some love camping and roughing it in the wild, while others want more of an urban exploring experience. We really do have such a broad mix of teens join us.
What our teen travelers do tend to have in common, however, is a thirst for adventure. They aren’t looking for “just another” lazy summer, but instead to take on new challenges and broaden their social and cultural horizons, in support of their own personal growth.
When your teen is well-matched to their choice of trip, they will be well-placed to thrive
It would however be an oversimplification, to suggest that we accept “anyone and everyone” for each RLT program; quite the opposite, in fact.
We have high expectations for those who join us on our trips. This is why we seek out individuals who are genuinely excited about the prospect of their participation in their chosen trip, and who are willing to help make a positive contribution to the group dynamic.
Those high expectations are reflected in our enrollment process, which includes a requirement for all parents and guardians to complete a detailed enrollment form and personality profile form.
Every new prospective participant in a The Road Less Traveled program must also submit a teacher or coach reference. Furthermore, we expect all participants to schedule a pre-trip phone call with a member of our office staff, to discuss various aspects they will need to know about ahead of their time away.
All these steps enable us to ensure your child is genuinely interested in joining us on one of our teen service trips, and will be well-suited to the challenges and experiences they can expect during the program they have applied to. It also means when our group meets on the first day of the trip, they all have the same energy and enthusiasm towards the trip, and we can build on that momentum over the coming weeks.

Strengthening the home-office regime and enhancing remote workplace safety
As workplaces evolve and remote work remains prevalent, amendments to the Bulgarian Labour Code have been recently adopted to reshape the regulations governing home-office arrangements and remote workplace safety standards. The amendments further address the impact of digitalisation and new technologies on work and aim to improve the work-life balance of employees.
Mandatory specification of remote workplace
An important change is the explicit requirement to define the exact address of the remote workplace. This is already the case in practice, also in line with the authorities’ guidelines. Better clarity in the law will further help to ensure compliance with labour regulations and provide adequate protection of the parties to the employment agreement. The parties have the flexibility to agree on more than one remote workplace. Employees can also temporarily change their remote workplace for up to 30 working days per year.
Advanced workplace safety measures
Some workplace health and safety obligations are now imposed on employees who work remotely. They must provide written information about the characteristics of their remote place of work (in response to the minimum health and safety requirements shared by the employer) and report any labour accidents promptly. All employees are now specifically authorised by law firm to not respond to messages and calls initiated by their employers outside working hours. Exceptions to this rule can be agreed in the employment agreement or collective bargaining agreement. This is one of a few cases where Bulgarian legislation is ahead of the EU legal framework which is still considering whether the right to disconnect will become community law.
Joint liability between main contractors and subcontractors
When the employer is a direct subcontractor in the context of a service agreement, the main contractor is jointly liable with the employer-subcontractor for the payment of remuneration to employees. The contractor's liability is limited to the rights of employees related to the service agreement between the main contractor and the employer. Main contractors are also not liable when they have performed their obligations in good faith under the contract with the employer.

If you’re a regular reader of the Ski Exchange blog, you will already know something about the importance of ensuring your ski boots fit well. After all, if you want to have the best possible time while out on the slopes – and to achieve optimal performance – your ski boots and skis will need to be in a symbiotic relationship, in light of the fact it is your feet that will guide your skis.
So, it might seem a redundant question to ask whether it would be “preferrable” for your ski boots to be too big or too small, as neither would be ideal. And in many respects, you would be right to think this.
However, there are still some factors related to size that you might wish to bear in mind as you arrange for professional ski boot assessment and fitting by experts such as our own.
The “desired” tightness or looseness of ski boots can be a key point of debate
It can be easy to feel trapped between the risks of your ski boots being overly small, and too large. As a broad rule, decreasing the size of your ski boots is likely to lend itself better to performance, while increasing your ski boots’ size may help enhance comfort.

From that perspective, if you are in any doubt, it is probably a better idea to ensure your feet fill your chosen boots well, even at the risk of them feeling slightly too small at first. Don’t fall for the idea (as is also sometimes spread) that “you’ll lose your toenails if your toes touch the end of the boot”.
There is, of course, an easy way to ensure the optimal ski boot fit…

4 Fun Arts And Crafts Ideas To Try For Pride Season 2024 – Shredded-Paper
Yes, we’re all “four” the theme of fours here at Shredded-Paper.co.uk! So, we decided that as 2024’s Pride Month approaches in June, we would put the spotlight on just four excellent ways to celebrate LGBT people that also happen to be artsy and craftsy.
So, let’s jump right in with the paper, scissors, possibly some shredded craft tissue from our range, and whatever else you might require for these Pride-focused projects.
A rainbow table runner
Adding Pride colours to your table could be just the thing for infusing your party venue with a sense of fun before the celebrations have even started.
You can create a rainbow table runner by selecting, measuring, and cutting out fabrics that each represent one “stripe” of the rainbow, before sewing the strips together in rainbow “order”. Don’t forget to allow a 0.5cm seam allowance as you finish by sewing all the way around the edge.
A tie-dyed t-shirt… or several
That plain-white tee or uninspiring tote bag could soon be looking vibrantly Pride-ready when you apply a rainbow-arch tie-dye design to it.
This can be done by using a washable marker to draw the top and bottom of the rainbow arch onto dry fabric, before gently fan-folding the fabric along each of the two lines, so that each drawn-on line starts to appear straight on the top surface of the folds.
Once you have banded the fabric on each of the lines, and you have multiple banded sections, apply a different colour to each section in rainbow order. This can then be followed by setting the dye, and your newly tie-dyed shirt being rinsed and washed in readiness for use.
A painted stone or rock… or an entire collection of them
The collection and subsequent painting of rocks and stones with all manner of Pride and rainbow themes – often incorporating inspiring messages such as “just be you” or “love is love” – is another fun, creative practice that has been adopted by many LGBT people (and their allies) down the years.
Acrylic paints, applied with a thin brush, are ideal for this activity, as they dry quickly enough for a further coat to be applied to the previous one after just a few minutes.
A paper mâché bowl
A lot of us associate paper mâché crafts with covering a balloon. Sure enough, this can be a great way to create a Pride-themed bowl, provided that you inflate the balloon to the desired bowl size before you start creating your masterpiece.
There are two main ways to create paper mâché: using soaked and shredded craft tissue and glue to create a paper pulp, or layering paper strips over a mould, with glue to hold everything in place. The latter is the quicker and less complicated method of the two.

National Highways completes £65 million upgrade of A11 - Transport Planning Associates
The Government-owned company responsible for the operation, maintenance, and improvement of England’s motorways and major A roads has finished a £65 million concrete reconstruction project on the A11 road at Wymondham.
The scheme has entailed almost 10 miles of dual carriageway being upgraded to asphalt. As reported by Highways magazine, the work has been concentrated on the stretch of the A11 between Spooner Row and Tuttles’ Interchange, with the old concrete road surface – and some of its foundations – being removed.
This was followed by reconstruction work involving a new asphalt top and recycled material. Indeed, sustainability has been a key priority underpinning the scheme. National Highways stated that its decision to take 60,000 cubic metres of concrete from the carriageway and recycle it into the revamped road, was one of several innovations the company had used to minimise CO2 emissions during the rebuilding.
The project’s average speed cameras, meanwhile, were powered using renewable energy. Another part of the work was the exploratory use of kinetic floor tiles in the site compound, with these tiles generating electricity when walked over.
“Cutting-edge” tech and “a smoother travel experience for all road users”
Roads minister Richard Holden said that the £65 million improvement works would “grow the economy in the region”.
Also expressing confidence about the favourable effects of the reconstruction was National Highways’ head of scheme delivery (East), Simon Amor. He stated that the rebuilt road “not only showcases the power of collaboration and cutting-edge concrete technology, but also promises enhanced safety, reduced maintenance needs, and a smoother travel experience for all road users.”
National Highways said that the last 16 months had seen it undertake a range of processes as part of the improvement project. These included the removal and recycling of enough concrete “to fill 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools”, as well as the laying of 147,000 tonnes of new asphalt, “the equivalent weight of 786 Boeing 747 planes”.
Some 27,000 metres of new drainage were also installed, along with 13,000 metres of new safety barrier, and 60 new traffic signs. Workers also painted 41,000 metres of road marking, and laid 3,600 road studs, in what was unquestionably a mammoth project.
Don’t look further for transport planning and infrastructure design consultancy
The improvement works have formed part of National Highways’ £400 million campaign to “revitalise” concrete roads, which constitute more than 400 lane miles (4.6%) of the organisation’s network, and are largely found along the country’s eastern side.
It is anticipated that approximately half of the old-style concrete roads in the East will be subject to repair or replacement, an effort that will be of interest to many leading highway engineers and transport consultants.

What Does The Crisis In The Red Sea Mean For Sea Freight Shipping Rates - KTL UK
Red Sea crisis drives up rates, as some shippers look to air freight
Our team at KTL has continued to closely monitor the situation in the Red Sea since our previous update. Events have been fast-moving, although it has still been the case over the last few weeks that vessels making their way through the area have been subject to attacks from Yemen-based Houthi militants.
Now, the impacts of such disruption are rippling even more profoundly through global supply chains, including in the sea freight rate quotations received by some of those looking to transport goods efficiently across national borders.
Can you expect to have to pay more for international freight?
The short answer to that question would presently seem to be “yes”, although it must be emphasised that at the time of typing, this is still a situation very much in flux. It remains to be seen whether the crisis could persist for a few weeks, several months, or for longer than that – and of course, all of this could have major consequences for freight rates in the year or so ahead.
So, let’s provide a refresher on the things we do know as the situation presently stands. The Red Sea attacks have already prompted shipping companies to switch to alternative routes – and as reported by CNBC, longer detours around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope have driven up ocean freight rates by as much as $10,000 (approximately £7,900) per 40-foot container.
Container ships have already reportedly diverted some $200 billion (£158 billion) of goods away from the Red Sea route they would have otherwise used. Intriguingly, it has also been reported that some shippers have turned to air freight as an alternative, thereby pushing up the rates for that particular mode of goods transportation as well.
A still-evolving and uncertain situation – so act accordingly
However, it is also important to apply some perspective to the situation that might go some way to reassuring those intending to work with a freight forwarding company.
Prior to the recent Red Sea crisis, global shipping container rates had more than halved compared to 2022, following a boom in the immediate “post-pandemic” period. And even with freight rates having comparatively soared lately amid the latest uncertain situation, the Freightos Baltic Index for 12th January 2024 was still “just” $2,613, compared to the more than $11,000 that had been recorded in the autumn of 2021.
So, although both air and sea freight rate quotations could remain higher for a while than they had been until fairly recently, some well-placed industry watchers are voicing caution, and suggesting it may still be too early to make definitive forecasts.

As those who have previously joined our leaders on one of our popular teen summer programs will already be aware, there are few things as powerful as meaningful and purposeful travel for opening up a young person’s world. When it comes to helping your teen to build their self-confidence, independence, leadership, resilience, and sense of community and service, our teen summer programs are the best around!
But which travel programs of ours would be the “best” for your teen? The answer to that question will naturally depend greatly on your teen’s specific needs, interests, and goals.
This largely explains why we have such an in-depth enrolment process, which includes taking time to set up a discussion with one of our directors. This way, we – and you – will be able to establish whether your chosen Road Less Traveled (RLT) service program would be the most suitable one for your teen.

So, we thought that for this article, we would put the spotlight on just three of our teen travel programs that are arguably among our very best, and explain the reasons why.
Iceland: Nordic Elements
If your 9th to 12th grader loves outdoor adventure, they will almost certainly love having the opportunity to challenge themselves on this action-packed program.
Iceland presents utterly stunning scenic backdrops on which to hike, and camp underneath the midnight sun. With powerful waterfalls, impressive glaciers and interesting towns full of folklore, it is a fascinating place to travel to and explore. Participants can also expect to witness all manner of fascinating wildlife, including whales, dolphins, puffins, Arctic foxes, and many more intriguing animals. We take on a multi-night backpacking expedition on the Laugavegur Trail to experience the raw natural beauty of rural Iceland. This is a challenging hike that will push students to their limits, but with great reward and satisfaction and we tackle the challenges as a group. We also take a boat tour, visit the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon's Floating Icebergs, soak in the Geothermal Springs of the Blue Lagoon and visit the most southerly town of the country, Vic.
This trip is always popular with students, with limited space available for summer 2024.
Greece: Coastal Conservation
In our humble (and in no way biased) view here at RLT, no range of teen summer programs is complete without at least one that focuses on the endlessly captivating Greek Islands. Packed with Greek culture, postcard worthy views around every corner, and delicious local cuisines, Greece simply has to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
Our service trip allows students to wild camp on beaches and uninhabited islands as we take a multi-day kayaking expedition around the coastline. Exploring historic caves, snorkeling in the warm clear water, and viewing wildlife from our kayaks, it's an adventure you won't get anywhere else. The second half of our trip allows us to give back to the natural world as we help with important turtle conservation service projects in Kefalonia. Helping with nesting sites, data collection and snorkel studies, this hands-on project gives students experience in marine conservation, while continuing to explore the stunning scenery. We only have a few spaces remaining for summer 2024!
Puerto Rico: Reefs To Rainforests
While an RLT summer travel program can certainly take your teen to the other side of the world, your middle schooler could also stay on US territory, and have a unique and immersive trip to a place like no other part of the US!
We are, of course, referring to the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, which – on this adventure, service, and Spanish immersion program – reveals its charms in so many exciting ways. 6th to 8th graders can swim at remote beaches and coves, kayak in a bioluminescent bay, snorkel in the company of turtles, help with environmental service projects, explore El Yunque National Park, and so much more! This trip is likely to fill soon, so act quickly to save your spot!
