Hi! So, I started to watch Supernatural quite recently for the first time (like, this month :P). I'm only on S-1 rn and I'm really enjoying the show.

Before watching the show, I decided to look through all sorts of SPN tags to get a general idea of what the fandom is like. I do have a lot of idea now lol. It's not my first fandom experience, so a lot of things are quite predictable.

I'm a non-shipper for this show, but it's not rocket-science to see how important Sam and Dean are to each other.

Monster-hunting is their job, but on a personal level, they're each other's first priority. Then come their parents (on the priority list). And then anyone else.

While I don't know what Castiel is like in canon yet, or his canon dynamic with Dean (so no particular opinions on D*stiel just yet), I don't understand the Jared Padalecki hate that I keep seeing in the Hellers' posts?

For context, I've decided I'm a Sam girl. I'm not personally attracted to any of the characters, it's just that Sam is my fave now in this show. I also prefer Jared's performance over Jensen's (just a personal preference there, nothing more).

Like, it would be one thing if Sam were a canon love interest for Dean and so Hellers got mad that Sam got in the way of their ship (it would be unreasonable, but that thing would at least make a bit of sense).

But he's not. He's Dean's brother in canon.

(I know Wincest exists in the fandom, and I can see where those shippers come from even though I personally don't ship it. But even then, I know that Wincest shippers were never hoping for their ship to become canon. They knew that romantic Wincest would only ever be a fanon thing, right?)

Dean can still keep his canon platonic relationship with Sam and be romantically together with Cass (if that's what D/C shippers want, that is).

What Dean feels for Sam and what he might feel for Cass in a shipper's opinion are two completely different things. Why isn't Dean allowed to keep both of those relationships in his life?

Is Dean not allowed to have a life outside of Cass anymore just because he's (supposedly) in love?

That's so weird.

Then the same hate extends to Jared Padalecki too. I don't know what he's like IRL, but as far as his acting as Sam Winchester is concerned (and his looks), I don't think there's anything to complain or hate on him about.

Sam's character also seems to be well-written so far.

Tl;dr: I don't understand Sam/Jared hate that mostly comes from Hellers when Sam isn't even a love interest of Dean in canon (even if he were, hating on him for that reason alone would still be unreasonable, but then it would at least make sense, because rabid shippers have always been like this across various fandoms). Am I missing something here? Care to fill me in?

Actually, that's the whole problem: hellers are unreasonable. No matter how many times it's explained that it's fine to ship whatever you like in fanon, they ignore and keep right on pushing for what they want to happen in canon. They're very entitled people.

They claim their Jared hate is for personal reasons- they have these ridiculous lists and everything- but the truth is, they hate that he never quit SPN. They honestly believe that if he had, the show's premise would change, Dean would discover his "true" sexuality, fall in love with Castiel and SPN would become a love story between an angel and a hunter.

Your personal triggers and squicks do not get to determine what kind of art other people make.

People make shit. It's what we do. We make shit to explore, to inspire, to explain, to understand, but also to cope, to process, to educate, to warn, to go, "hey, wouldn't that be fucked up? Wild, right?"

Yes, sure, there are things that should be handled with care if they are used at all. But plenty more things are subjective. Some things are just not going to be to your tastes. So go find something that is to your tastes and stop worrying so much about what other people are doing and trying to dictate universal moral precepts about art based on your personal triggers and squicks.

I find possession stories super fucking triggering if I encounter them without warning, especially if they function as a sexual abuse metaphor. I'm not over here campaigning for every horror artist to stop writing possession stories because they make me feel shaky and dissociated. I just check Does The Dog Die before watching certain genres, and I have my husband or roommate preview anything I think might upset me so they can give me more detail. And if I genuinely don't think I can't handle it, I don't watch it. It's that simple.
