Research Paper
Majority of people see robotics as useful and helpful for humans, but what about our jobs? This is a very important topic at present due to the fact that we are just now beginning to implement robotics in a lot of professions. What jobs will be available for Americas future? When you ask yourself that question, you have to remember that many future jobs haven’t been introduced yet due to the fact that humans are always innovating. Robotics are a newer type of technology that has its sight on taking jobs that could be automated, thus being more efficient, which leaves more room for profit for the business. Robotics will also be safer to the business due to the fact the human errors are one of the top causes of accidents in the workplace which in turn saves the company money. Robotics in the workplace doesn’t sound too bad once you look at the options. Robotics in the workplace are increasing exponentially within the past couple years. Ball State University’s research found that, out of the 5.6 million manufacturing jobs lost between 2000 and 2010, 85% of those were due to technology. This proves that outsourcing is no longer the top source of job loss. The main difference between robotic and outsourcing job loss is that robotics will be creating new jobs in America rather than outsourcing creating new jobs for other countries. Robotics will also lead to better paying jobs, as well as improving the quality of life in America. More importantly, if you were to look at the history of technology you would see that the growth of technology has a direct correlation with the growth of jobs. So why would robotics, a newer type of technology, be any different than technology in the past that directly led to job growth? For example, the printing press, I do not think they would ever imagine that one day libraries with thousands of books as well as librarians would ever exist. I believe robotics to have a similar affect. This concept of creating a technology and not knowing what jobs will result from it is nothing new. This makes me think that robotics will create more jobs than it takes, even though the initial thought may be that robotics are stealing jobs right from us. I believe robotics will first take jobs, then, after a period of time, will create jobs that we don’t even know will exist yet. While creating new jobs, robotics will also be increasing the quality of life in America, as well as allowing businesses to be more efficient. Now robotics has been around for the past 30 or so years, and humans have been advancing in robotics exponentially since then. Now robots are in our factories here in America working 24 hours a day building things for us. Now like how I have stated earlier, robots have given humans so many benefits. First, it frees up humans from doing repetitive tasks all day to now being free to find their passion in life and act on it. Ex-factory workers will now be able to find their passion, find a job that goes with their passion, which in my opinion will lead to a happier life, as well as a better life financially. It is well accepted that if you truly love your job you are much more satisfied with your life and happier. Robotics would allow factory workers that do repetitive tasks find a better job. Now people may say that I am counting on jobs being made from robotics that haven’t been made yet when robotics in the present are taking jobs now. To that I would state to show me any type of innovation where it hasn’t resulted in job growth throughout history and there wouldn’t be one. Advances in any type of technology has led to job growth. In Metz’s article he talks about how job loss due to robotics isn’t really job loss he considers it to be more of a job transformation. I found Metz to have the same view point towards robotics in the workforce that I have. Metz states how that he believes that robotics will steal our jobs, but they will create new ones. One thing that Metz states that I liked was that robotics will be the evolution of the repair man, stating how repairing a robot is a lot more difficult to repair than in his example a vending machine. This would lead to higher wages to be able to repair robots thus increasing the quality of life in America. Similarly, to me he does admit that certain jobs will disappears due to robotics, but it’s the fact that so many new jobs will be made by robotics that it will make up for the disappearance of certain jobs. Another saying that Metz said was how it is job transformation, not job replacement. I certainly agree with this one because there will be better jobs from robotics than being in a factory doing a repetitive task all day. A robot could take the job of doing the same task all day while the original human worker can try and get a better job for the individual that relates more to their passion in life.   In Solon’s article she writes about how in the future one day the door bell will ring and you will go to the door and see a pair of shoes, but you didn’t order them… your “intelligent Agent” did. Some believe that one day a personal robotic assistant will be like a television where everyone has one, and will keep tract of basic needs such as a new pair of shoes after yours get destroyed. This is a rather distant future in my opinion but not farfetched due to the fact that there are now automated systems that will keep tract of groceries used and what you need and then will proceed to order them. Robots are also very beneficial to companies. First, they can operate non-stop, as well as in non-heated or cooled rooms. That 24 hours a day of non–stop work as well as less wages adds up over time for the business. Human error is also the cause of major accidents in the workplace switching to robotics will eliminate such injuries that will result in saving the company money from paying time off work. Robotics almost seems like a no brainer for businesses, which is why you see them being implemented more and more every year in every available aspect of the company. Futuristic companies such as Tesla have begun going in to the robotic field to develop new and unique features. For example, Tesla has an autopilot mode where you can turn it on and the car will drive itself. As well as being an electric car with certain packages that allows to go 0-60 in 2.8 sec while saving the environment. Other companies like uber are also going into the automated driving field. This intrigues customers that makes them want to look more into the company. Such technology gives the company free advertisement due to people talking about the new technology. For example, right now by me writing about it. There are numerous ways like this how robots benefit a business. Now there are a few drawbacks for the implementation of robotics. First is time. Time because it will take a long time to make all cars automated, as well as truckers. That is a lot of time to intergrade every vehicle on the road, but it would be the safest mode of transport. Now another drawback is money imagine how much it will cost to implement automated vehicles in every car, and what do you do when there is a family that can’t afford a new automated car? This makes me think that it will take a long time to implement self-driving cars but gradually companies like tesla will slowly implement them until that is the only type car available on the market. These drawbacks in my opinion are not negative enough to make robotics not seem like the right choice. Like what type of new technology doesn’t take a lot of time and money. I still think with these drawbacks that robotics will be the right choice for the future. There are way too many benefits to society than the drawbacks. With the current pace of growing in the robotic field I believe we will be on the right track to implement all types of uses for robotics in every field of work. I think people should be excited to see this changes being implemented overtime as the world around us evolves with technology. Lastly, I believe if we let robotics set its course and try not to put any limitations on them, besides the obvious don’t make a robot to destroy, but if robotics advance freely I believe we will have a smooth transition to a place where the quality of life goes up. Robotics will develop new jobs in America helping the economy while freeing up ex-factory workers which in turn will increase innovations. Robotics are in no doubt going to be in the future, and workers should be excited for the jobs they will create.

One Good and One Bad Source

The following, source 1, is a good source that I did use in my research paper. A robot could take the job of doing the same task all day while the original human worker can try and get a better job for the individual that relates more to their passion in life.         Now for source 2, I believe it to be a bad source for my research paper. While it is on the topic of robotics and jobs, I believe the source to go off topic due to the fact that it begins to go into the presidential election and who was right or wrong on the topic of job loss, and where the source of the most jobs lost would be. As well as going into the past presidential election the source also goes into trade deals, and job loss based off of the specific trade deals and in my research paper I would like to stay away from those topics. In my research paper I would like to keep it simple and address my topic based off of robotic job loss compared to job gain, and not address confusing trade deals that even our president doesn’t understand. As well as addressing the topics of the past presidential election and what they said or did would be useless for my research question. Source 2 also fails to acknowledge the fact that robotics will create jobs, it almost seems that the source believes we have every job we will ever need and that if robotics takes them there will be no jobs left which is absurd. Even back in the past where everyone was a farmer the fridge destroyed a ton of jobs due to now you can keep food eatable longer. All those ex-farm workers didn’t just sit around, they created new jobs that benefitted the whole society. The same thing will happen as robotics start to grow. For those reasons I have decided to not use source 2 in my research paper.

How To Implement It In The Real World
My claim for my research question, how will the workforce be affected by the use of robotics, is that we should not interfere and let robotics claim its spot in the workforce. Now how will this look in the real world, well the good thing it already is, at a small scale, while still not being interfered with. The good thing about my research question is that it is already being implemented in the real world at a small scale. This means that we can really see how robotics are affecting the workforce. It is well known that robotics is already taking jobs, and based off this common knowledge an easy way to see if robotics is really making unemployment rise, is to just look at the unemployment rate of the past 10 years. When you look at the unemployment rate you see it rise at 10% in 2010 and decline steadily for the next 7 years when you will come to today in 2017 with the unemployment rate at 4.4%. Now with robotic use being increased every year in the workforce, if robotics were to increase the unemployment rate then shouldn’t we see the same trend in the graph of unemployment. Well, the truth is we don’t, but we do see a steady decrease in unemployment every year since 2010. While you can say robotics in the workforce are still early on, and are just not implementing the amount of robotics that will be used in the future, but to that fact I would respond that robotics have already taken millions of jobs and the unemployment rate still gradually declined, and if robotics were really an issue I believe we would see a spike in unemployment. This shows that today robotics is already creating jobs that didn’t exist in the past, for example the obvious new job of creating robots and if we let robotics take its course like how I believe we should I think that the quality of jobs will increase while improving the quality of life here in America.
