Ooof. He's so cute when he smiles.
And Steed was all, "LOL, I technically own Emma Peel. She's never gonna hear the end of this."

Place your hands on your platonic work partner's chest, like he's the lover you can't get enough of. Kiss your platonic work partner like you're displaying passion and commitment at the altar, despite it just being a kiss on the cheek.

The gesture she's making and the look on her face, suggests he said something to compliment her.

I was a huuuge X-Files fan in the 90's (aged 11 when it started in the UK) and I still have a lot of affection for that show and rewatch it every few years. I discovered The Avengers just after the movie came out in 98 (I was about 15/16) and my Dad said that the film couldn't hold a candle to the TV show. I started with The New Avengers, as that was repeated on TV at the time but, I ordered the Mrs Peel collection on DVD, from the US and I wasn't disappointed. I could also immediately see the similarities between Steed and Mrs Peel and the Mulder and Scully dynamic.
Interestingly though, despite the raunchy photoshoots Duchovny and Anderson did and despite their intense chemistry on screen, I never thought the two were as close, irl, as Macnee and Rigg. Somehow there's just something which comes across in the latter's relationship, which shows genuine love and attraction. Whereas I get the sense Duchovny and Anderson just loved to flirt but, it was all for show.
they walked
so they could run
(patrick macnee and diana rigg as john steed and emma peel, 1960s // david duchovny and gillian anderson as fox mulder and dana scully, 1990s)

Yes, Diana was stunning as she was. There's absolutely no need to photoshop or filter her. Some people do it on the FB groups and Twitter to all the Avengers women and it really winds me up.
I love Diana Rigg and I am fucking incensed at how many images I find of her that are photoshopped. She's a gorgeous woman; she has freckles, and kinda wonky teeth, and a scar on her forehead and wrinkles around her eyes (yes, at the age of 27, she does!), and if you're looking at her face and going "I can make it better!" then there is something truly fucked up about you.
Fucking stop it.

Fans of The X-Files should know that its creator, Chris Carter, has said The Avengers influenced the characterisation of Mulder and Scully. I think Scully was supposed to be based on Emma but, personally, I see more of Cathy in her. I didn't originally see Mulder as anything like Steed but, having re-watched The X-Files recently, I think his sense of humour is similar to Steed's. Some of the other writers must have been Avengers / New Avengers fans too, as the plots, or protagonists of some episodes are similar.
Saw someone say that The X-Files was the first TV show to feature a man and woman as partners and equals, even developing the female character as a competent and respected scientist whom the man explicitly and openly admires for her brilliance and her strength, and...my children, The Avengers did it first. Like...that's the plot of the show.

I love how Diana plays it suddenly serious, when he sits down. Steed's demeanour is casual and genial but, she recognises the depth of the emotions beneath that façade. He's trying to gauge the situation with Beresford and see if she's really interested in him and she's been playing a bit of a game with what she thought was playful jealousy. In this moment I think she realises that her flirting with Beresford does really hurt Steed and what that means for their relationship.
Steed, literally boiling over with jealousy: I'm JUST THOUGHTFUL.

His genuine smile suggests he may not have been expecting the line delivered in quite that fashion; he was so enamoured of her.
"Let's put a pigeon among the pussies."
First time I noticed both her intent focus on his mouth and her eyebrow raise at the end...

Patrick has a moment where a fond expression crosses his face. I imagine he's thinking, "She's doing it again, on camera. Does she want everyone to know."
Yes, it is a 60s TV show and so they're constantly in a pretty tight frame, but I have seen many 60s TV shows and no one climbs their co-stars like these two.

Ooof that look, that casual step into his personal space and her air of superiority. She might as well have a big neon sign, flashing "back off bitch."
Wherein Emma climbs up Stede's chest just so everyone knows where they stand.

I wonder if the script called for Diana to play it this way, or she chose to, because she knew what Emma's reaction would be to another woman muscling in on John Steed.
Emma's general rule is that no other woman is allowed to get closer to John Steed than her.
