Report from Brazil's cannabis polygon 4/4 The reality in the Polygon seems to be completely disconnected from the big cities of the country. Even if the cities closest to the polygon like Salvador or Recife feel the decrease of the quality and the rarity of traditional Brazilian cannabis, the polygon has never supplied more than 40% of the Brazilian cannabis market. There has always been cannabis coming from neighboring countries such as Colombia, but mainly Paraguay. Paraguayan pressed cannabis flowers called 'prensado', is the main cannabis product consumed in brazil, sometimes green and tasty, sometimes dark, with fungus and ammoniac smell. But for the wealthiest, high-quality indoor hybrids flowers or all kinds of modern concentrates are available at a high price. Most of the younger generations wanting to get involved in the process of cannabis production, being in the big cities or the Sertao, are only looking towards the modern hybrids from Europe or the US with very little insight about what has been going on in their country the past centuries. In the end, it is a good and common example of what eradication efforts by governments are causing to the plant, its producers and its consumers. Traditional cannabis are disappearing, being replaced by uncontrolled hybrids. Producers caught between police and mafias use more chemicals and harvest earlier (sometimes way too early) to secure a meager revenue. Consumers end up buying a low-quality product when available. For sure there is more information to dig, this is just a report on a timely personal experience. With more time, more trust and more contacts, there is still a lot to discover about traditional cannabis in Brazil. #cannabis #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #landrace #traveldiary #travelpic #maconha #maconhabrasil #brazil #bresil — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3cqemUY

Report from Brazil's cannabis polygon 3/4 The use of cannabis during indigenous rituals dates back from the violent colonization of the country. Today it seems that the use persist among the indigenous tribes around the Sertao, but it became a very taboo topic as one shaman explained that the risks involved for growing it were too high, and that it could lure the youngest into traffic organizations. The plant, once holy, is now seen as cursed. Today drug trafficking took a different shape in the polygon, the violence between gangs linked to family feud seems to have decreased with cannabis production. But the region didn't abandon its illegal revenues, cannabis now being just one of the commodities to buy used cars or to invest in the cocaine trade. The dispersion of traffickers in different prisons across the country seems to have given birth to a larger geographical network of cannabis production thus avoiding the extra police scrutiny of the polygon. #cannabiscommunity #cannabisculture #dopeculture #growyourown #marijuana #drugs #weedstagram420 #maconhabrazil #maconha #canamo — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2TeXUPu

Report from Brazil's cannabis polygon 2/4 Around the polygon, good quality weed can be found in the biggest cities such as Petrolina. Nice buds with branches and seeds rolled in paper. But getting close to the cannabis field raises a lot of suspicion and paranoia. Nonetheless, few farmers were willing to discuss, and most of them described the use of PBZ in the cannabis fields, the arrival of hybrids in the '90s, or the harvest before maturation. That really translated well in the products we managed to obtain in the area. Maybe we've been unlucky, maybe we've been cheated, maybe it was not the right time, but it was all leaves, sometimes with tiny flower (not more than a month of flowering), no buds, no seeds. One good surprise, though was a gram of expensive hash made by rubbing a knife on the fresh flowers. The police repression doesn't seem to have impacted Brazilians' appetite for cannabis, many of them complaining about the inconsistent quality of the available cannabis products. One cannabis selling point sees a continuous flow of customers from all parts of society getting their 10 gr for 20 reais. It is also easy to find Cannabis-infused alcohol drinks all around the polygon. Raizadas are alcoholic drinks made of cachaça infused with roots or plants. It is possible to find all kinds of raizada and sometimes with cannabis buds, cannabis branches or cannabis roots. #maconha #raizada #maconhabrazil #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #landrace #420culture #weedlife #beuh #cachaca #pituconha — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/39c3BDC

Report from Brazil's cannabis polygon 1/4 In the Nordeste of Brazil, there is a region around the Sao Francisco river famous for its cannabis plantations. The 'poligono de maconha' is a network of cities along this river between Petrolina and Paulo Alfonso. If you ask anybody about good quality weed in Brazil, they might tell you about 'Cabrobo', often misspelled 'Cabrobro', a town at the center of the polygon, supposed to be famous for its cannabis production. The area spreads over several states and used to supply the biggest Brazilian cities. This is where some of the ancestral Brazilian cannabis such as the famous manga rosa, seem to have evolved up to the '90s. The 90's era saw the enforcement of the cannabis ban with police becoming more equipped and violent. The repression keeps on increasing up to this day which led to lower production and lower quality available to the consumer. The use of hybrids to secure an early harvest also seems to have really altered the traditional strains adapted to the Sertao climate. Today, cannabis farmers seem to be frightened by the sound of helicopters and the increased use of drones. Police violence and the number of operations seem to have increased since the Bolsonaro election, scaring many farmers to engage in cannabis cultivation. If you survive the police arrest, you may lose your property rights according to Brazilian law. #cannabiscommunity #cannabisculture #landraces #mangarosa #420 #marijuana #maconha #maconhabrasil #maconheiros #poligono #saofrancisco — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3aeJqFi
