one of the best tips for Real Life that I’ve ever picked up is to always highball your estimate whenever someone asks you “when can you get this done by” by about 25% (if you can get away with it). that way, if it ends up being harder than you thought, you’ve got extra time to figure things out and if you were right about how much time it takes then you get to look like an absolute genius instead of just a simply competent person.

what you may not have realized is that I learned this crucial piece of life advice from an episode of Star Trek where Scotty is telling Geordi that whenever he told Kirk something on the Enterprise was at full capacity, it was always only ever a notch or so below full capacity so that Scotty looked like the god of all engineers when he was able to magically hack the warp drive to run a little beyond what he’d told everyone else was “full capacity” and honestly that one throwaway gag from Star Trek has changed my life.

As @theflowerofthecommonwealth told me in a message, this is very much something Lucille, my sole, would do. Girl has impulse control issues when it comes to building up settlements and gets sad when she doesn't have the materials.

Nick and the others have started getting concerned about her pushing herself like this. Especially since she's figured out how to turn trash and rubble on the side of the road into building supplies (scrap everything mod).

You know how you can take a small broken down place like, for example, the drive inn and basically build up a small town really quickly? How about the companions and others react to sole finding some run-down place, separating from them for a about 24 hours while the companions go do something else and when they return the next morning, sole has somehow turned it into a well-defended fortress with either concrete or metal walls, dozens of turrets, and a small army of robot protectors that could hold off a army of deathclaws, all overnight somehow.

Cait - "Listen, lass, I'm not the settlin' down in one place type of girl, but if we have to stop and catch our breath, I'm letting you set up camp'."

Piper - "Wow, Blue.... I'm... I'm actually speechless... And even I'll admit that's a rare occurrence..."

Curie - "Ooh!!! What a magnificent magic trick, Madame!"

MacCready - "Dang, boss... This is even better than Diamond City and Bunker Hill's defenses all put together!"

Deacon - "Okay... I like your funny ways, magic woman."

Codsworth - "Incredible, Mum! You've really outdone yourself this time!"

Hancock - "You think you could throw something like this together at Goodneighbor? It'd really do folks good to know they were safe from all the crap outside the town."

Danse - "Perhaps you should make a request for a position in procuring defenses and working in the armory for the Brotherhood. Your expertise could certainly prove to be very useful."

Preston - "General, if you could do this at the Castle, it would help the Minutemen so much! No raiders would even consider attacking the place by the time you were through with it."

Valentine - "That's... incredible. Fort Knox has certainly got nothing on you, kid."

X6-88 - "How in the world did you do that? That is enough work to occupy an entire group of men for days..."

Strong - "Strong not trust this... Yesterday it look like dump and today it look like city? Makes no sense!"
