► Camera setup:

We used two cameras, one was placed on gorilla tripod on top of the mirror at our application station to record the whole application process. Second camera was used for stills and close-ups.

► Application Process:

1. Prepare the station.

2. Pin up hair so they will not fall on the face during application.

3. Clean the skin to remove excess of oil.

4.  Smooth the eyebrows out with pros-aide and mascara brush and flatten them with fingers. 

5. Apply zombie googles:

- level both pieces, and mark the edge with the powder

- start gluing from the eyebrows, then cheeks, nose and the edges- layering two pieces in nose area

- remove loose edge with the brush dipped in acetone

- smooth out the edges with cotton bud dipped in acetone

6. Apply horns:

- level both pieces, and mark the edge with the powder

- start gluing from the middle and then glue the edges

- remove loose edge with the brush dipped in acetone

- smooth out the edges with cotton bud dipped in acetone, be careful not to destroy pieces below

7. Smooth out the edges using pros-aide cream and spatula. Let it dry. We applied around 2-3 layers. Stamp the edge with pros-aide cream and the sponge to add more texture.

8. Powder sticky edge.

9. Use 3rd degree to fix some edges.

10. Coloring with alcohol based pallets- stamping, spraying and blending. I focused on zombie googles, when Eliza was painting horns.

11. Use make-up palettes to create dark circles around the eyes and contour the piece.

12. Finish with make-up- smoky eye, lips.

13. Apply fake eyelashes.

14. Apply fake blood.

15. Curling and styling hair.

16. Once we took pictures I removed everything using oil-based remover and a brush, and then wiped off all remaining of the glue and the paint using baby wipes.

Contact lenses- shrilling blue eyes, that symbolize knowledge and youth  

perfectly contrast with the demonic character

Eyes- dark smoky eye, using brown, purple and black; adds depth to the look and emphasizes the blue color of the lenses; eye sockets highlighted with blue and purple, which are supposed to give the impression of dark circles under the eyes, and emphasize the prosthetics.

Red lips- We used red color to emphasize femininity and sex appeal of our character. Red lipstick is saturated with sexual connotations. We contoured lips with black color to add depth, mistery and evilness.

Blood- We used two types of blood: gel and liquid. Gel one was applied around the horns to add depth and contrast. Liquid one we used on the set to paint our hands.

► Costume-  Saffie took care of preparing the costume. She brought with her various black and red skirts, blouses and bras. Ultimately, we decided to focus on a mix of textures and erotic elements. We chose black fishnet, lace bralette, mesh blouse, several tulle and satin skirts, and a collar with spikes.

Set design

Lightning setup:

Low key lighting- lightning effect, that uses a hard light source to emphasize the shadows. Our aim was to create dramatic effect, that would highlight demonic character of our project.

,,A low-key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colours. Like high-key images, they convey atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery.’’ ( JasenkaG, 2020)

Back lighting- effect that allowed us to emphasize dramatic hair of our character. Light placed at the back contrasted the contour and created unique visual effect. Shadows at the front perfectly contrasted with lights from the back, and created fantasy, demonic look that we wanted to achieve.

,,Backlighting, defined in the simplest of ways, refers to the main source of light behind the photography subject. In other words, the main light (or one of the main lights) is positioned in such a way that it faces the camera. The subject is then placed in the middle of the light and the camera. This creates a certain glow effect at the edges or at the back of the subject.’’ (Michael Gabriel,n.d.)

Colour palette

Colour palette

1. Rosa, M. (2020). Colour palette- Mrs. Devil.‌

► Skin tones-  our character is highly humanized, that's why we decided to keep skin colors. The colors we use contain warm shades of highlights and shadows that outline facial features. The lighter shades were intended to emphasize the bony structure of the skull, while the darker were to give depth. We painted the horns same way.

► Gold- blonde hair was highlighted with additional lighting from the back.

► Reds- blood color, associated with power and dignity, as well as evil and suffering. The red color in our project was used cautiously, which resulted in perfect harmony and contrast between the colors. Hands covered in blood coming out of the sides are symbolizing lost souls, that are seduced and being lead to death by the devil. ,,The origin is based on the literal meaning of having blood on hands when someone commits the crime of killing someone.'’ (The Idioms) In makeup it only appears on lips. Red lipstick is saturated with sexual connotations. We also used red in costume.

,,Red, the color of blood and fire, is associated with meanings of love, passion, desire, heat, longing, lust, sexuality, sensitivity, romance, joy, strength, leadership, courage, vigor, willpower, rage, anger, danger, malice, wrath, stress, action, vibrance, radiance, and determination. (...)The color red is an intense color that is packed with emotion ranging from passionate, intense love to anger and violence — representing both cupid and the devil. It is a hot, strong, stimulating color that represents excitement and energy. Studies show that the color red can create physical effects such as elevated blood pressure, enhanced libido, increased respiratory rates, enhanced metabolism, increased enthusiasm, higher levels of energy, and increased confidence.’’ ( Jennifer Bourn, 2011)

► Black- gives depth, mystery and seriousness. Black definitely prevails in our design. Black background emphasizes the demonic character of our character and contrasts with blonde, messy hair, which looks even more effectively. Costume we chose was mostly black, just accentuate with a red tule skirt.  

,,Black is associated with power, fear, mystery, strength, authority, elegance, formality, death, evil, and aggression, authority, rebellion, and sophistication. (...)The black color is the absence of color. Black is a mysterious color that is typically associated with the unknown or the negative. The color black represents strength, seriousness, power, and authority.’’ ( Jennifer Bourn, 2011)

Character design- ideas

Character introduction: A sexy devil who seduces lost souls and leads them to death. The demonic character has been emphasized by selected prosthetic and expressive makeup. Lush blond hair contrasts with the diabolical look. The devil costume was carefully selected in terms of colours as well as in terms of textures. Tulle, layered skirt, lace bralette and mesh top harmonize perfectly with each other creating artistic chaos that emphasizes the sex appeal of our devil.

Prosthetics used:

-’’Zombie’’ googles-  they give the impression of tissue disappearance, which reveals the structure of the skull; a subtle change of facial features, giving a demonic look

-Pair of horns-  small, subtle, feminine and very effective

Inspirations:

► Hellboy (2004) - movie based on the Dark Horse Comics graphic novel Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mike Mignola; Hellboy make-up was sculpted and created by Rick Baker, Matt Rose and Chad Waters, applied on actor Ron Perlman, by Jake Garber; demonic makeup and enhanced, exposed muscles give character sex appeal;  his character is the complete opposite of our demonic, seductive, evil character, however his look was a great inspiration for our project;
