“Hades is the Host of Many. The broken, the damned, the lost, the hopeless, the abandoned. He welcomes them like a loving father and lets them finally have peace. He watches over them and cares for them.
Hades is the Unseen One. He is a presence behind you. He is reaching out for your hand when it clenches in rage or fear. He is sitting at your bedside to soothe your nightmares. He is kneeling next to you while you pray. He is always there when you need Him.
Hades gives. He gives love to those who need it. He gives hope to those without it. He gives guidance to those lost. He gives courage to those afraid. He gives comfort to those who seek it. He gives and He gives and He gives.
But what does Hades get in return? Hades, the King of the Underworld. Hades, God of Riches and Precious Metals. Hades, Husband to Persephone. What does He get in return for giving and giving and giving?
Hades does not get gifts, love, respect not from fear. He does not get tales of glory told of Him. He does not receive praise or songs. Hades does not get anything like that from the world unbeknownst to Him.
Hades is the Receiver of Many. We are what He receives for giving and giving and giving. The children of a forgotten faith. The children who got lost. The children who lost hope. We, the broken, the damned, the outcasts, the fallen, the hopeless, the downtrodden, are what Hades receives.
A crown and a kingdom are nothing without the people. And to Hades, the Host of Many, it is the best gift He can receive.”

something that happened to me today
I don’t usually write about my personal relationships with the Gods. The way they make me feel is beyond words, and I love that its mine and mine alone to experience. But I feel the need to share something.
The first encounter I ever had with anything divine was almost 8 years ago, when all of a sudden, from nowhere, I had an intense urge to look for Hades. I was just on the bus, minding my own business, and BAM! I found myself searching him frantically. Since then, I got older, and more confident and today he is part of a whole system of Gods and Goddesses I follow. But no matter what happened since then (and a lot has happened), he is my first, and I am so deeply in love with him.
Yesterday I was indexing the new library (going well, 30% of it is done already), and in the bibliography section of one of the articles, I found a source named “Worshiping Hades”. Well, I stopped whatever it is I was doing and used all the tricks I know to find this one article on open source. The only thing I found was in a German magazine, and it was all closed.
So, I did something I heard others do, but I never tried. I sent an email to the author of the article and asked her if she could send me a copy. I know. I KNOW! But some scholars are not bound by publications restriction and would love sending you their works. I asked nicely and sent the email, and sure enough, a few hours later, I got her reply.
At that point it was 3 am, and I woke up for the baby. I saw the email from her and couldn’t bring myself to open it. I feared she might scold me. I just looked at the notification on my phone screen, frozen. Thought about leaving it for the morning. Thought about screaming. But I could almost hear him saying “open it! Don’t worry! Just open the email!”. I listened to him and opened it. She was amazing and sent me a PDF copy of the full article! I read it like my life depends on it. And it was marvelous.
Tumblr media
what did it said??
This article made so much sense to me, yet it broke my heart to pieces. The author explains that Hades, in this aspect as lord of the dead, can benefit human kind only by abstaining from them, and since the relationship between Gods and humans is based on reciprocity, people gave him nothing in order to receive nothing. He is the bringer of wealth and abundance as ‘Pluton’, and the absence of those as ‘Hades’. She goes on to explain how he fought to protect the cities that did worshiped him, and how vulnerable he is, and isolated.
Tumblr media
We had this discussion before, didn’t we?
Then after that, I wondered, so much have changed. I can’t find it for some reason, but there was a post about the cultural warming up towards Hades as opposed to the disappearing of Demeter from common modern worship, as a byproduct of humanity detaching themselves of agriculture, or the detaching from death as present and constant option throughout our lives. Now that I read this article, I got some new insights. I believe it’s more than just how we spend our days and whether or not we need to call Demeter for help with crops or not.
Those of us who feel called to Hades, who devote ourselves to him, who adore him in every aspect he may have, and venerate him higher than any other, might not search for the same reciprocity talked about in other relationships with other Gods. Personally, when I pray to Hades, I don’t pray for anything but thank him for the job he does, and for allowing me to honor him. Being able to pray to him and having him in my life, is itself the blessing, and I aspire for nothing more than that.  Having him being seen, is the best gift I could possibly pray to.
I’m glad I live when I live, and that the years have led more people to seek the presence of a wonderful, kind, loving, and wise deity as Hades in their lives.

Can't shake this thought
This is the second scholary piece I read this kind of lines:
Tumblr media
The first one being "worshiping Hades" and the second is "underworld Gods in ancient Greek religion- death and reciprocity". Which are both amazing.
So- Hades: having almost no cult, basically is the background ruler next to Persephone, lord of the dead, and the living has no incentive to worship him. No cult of dead either.
But what if..
I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud here.
What if, they did have a cult? Of dead people, I mean. They're unseen and have an unseen God. How could we even know? What if he has a cult, and is honored and loved and cherished just not by living people, cause he is literally the lord of the dead?
What if, this is the mystery in the mysteries? I mean, we have some records of "secret stuff" about drinking from the right fountain and so on. But what if, this is just an initiation for the secret dead cult of Hades? What if those rites were held above ground in the name of Persephone, in order to maintain the connection with her husband in the next world? What if we, Hades' devotees, are just early?

Necromancy- a learning journal
This is a complete new thing for me. Even though I've been Hades devotee for the last 8 years, I had no interest in practicing necromancy what so ever. I barely use divination techniques, and have a very strong opinions on exploiting dead people for prophecies. Other than that, there was the big (huge) elephant in the room- starting to work on necromancy meant I would first have to deal with my own dead, my family members, that abused me for years. I felt like I was not ready for that kind of thing.
But that's not longer how I feel. Last few months were crazy, and I feel like handling my dead should be a priority for me now. But I have no idea how to lay them to rest and keep up nice, polite relationship with them.
I could have gone around tumblr to gather some info, I might still do it, but I wanted to start at the base. I wanted to know what the actual literature says about this practice, how it looked, what is to be expected. I read every bit (and summarized) from the book Greek and Roman Necromancy (Ogden, 2001), and I really want to share what I found with other.
Since there is a lot, I will make it into a series of posts. After this book, I will of course read others, and might share some insights from my actual practice when it will be relevant.
You are more than welcome to discuss and share your ideas and knowledge about the information I'll share.
Part #1- About necromacy
Part #2- Examples in ancient writings
Part #3- Terms used in necromancy
Part #4- About the ghosts
