Since the r-slur is making a comeback (you know, the word that starts with R, has six letters, and ends in D), I'm gonna make a little PSA:
Yes, it's an ableist slur.
Terms like "asshat," "head-up-ass," "up their own ass," and "high on their own farts" exist. There's also words like crap, dogshit, half-assed, assclown, and chucklefuck. And on the less vulgar side, there are terms like ridiculous, nonsense, train wreck, pointless, insipid, self-absorbed, pretentious, annoying, boring, contemptible, vile, and disgusting.
Substituting words like restarted, poptarted, brain damaged, smoothbrain, etc. is still ableist, because either 1. you obviously still mean the r-word, or 2. you're still using disability as an insult.

the gods have had mentally ill worshippers for as long as they’ve had worshippers.
the gods have had chronically ill worshippers for as long as they’ve had worshippers.
the gods have had neurodivergent worshippers for as long as they’ve had worshippers.
they won’t be offended or think less of you just because your devotion looks different to able-bodied neurotypical devotion. they understand.

I just gotta say...
If you are in a living situation or a community where you are terrified to speak your actual opinions for fear of being immediately ostracized, please just get out.
Quietly look for friends elsewhere, and just get out.

To Lady Hestia for confidence and safety when veiling
Hear me, Beloved Hestia,
Daughter of Kronos of Time and Flowing Rhea.
She who feeds the fires of Olympus and calls all hearths her home,
Eternal Hestia, the veiled goddess, and keeper of the home,
If I have ever lit your flame in your honour, please accept this prayer,
I wear this veil in honour of you and ask you to grant me the confidence to wear it in public, please sheild me from the negative thoughts and actions of others and to keep me safe outside my home,
I ask for your favour with a token of my praise, I offer to you (offering)

I veiled full time, public and private, for 10 years. I'm not doing it right now because I realized that I'm not female, and the way I learned to do it is very femme. As a result, my gods are not accepting it as an act of devotion from me at this time. Men veil in various cultures, but it'd be different. I'm an NB and I'd have to do some deep thinking about how to re-apply the practice.
That said, modest clothes were essential to my veiling practice.
In the broader world of veiling, outside pagan circles, how you veil isn't just about modesty: it communicates something about what community or sub-community you belong to.
Among both Muslims and Jews, you can sometimes tell people's individual theological beliefs, ethnic group, sub-culture, or political opinions based on the type of fabric, where it covers, what colors and prints you wear, and how it is styled.
Thus, when choosing your veiling style, be careful not to inadvertently ping as a member of a group you aren't a part of!
I remember this moment at a fast food place, where I was eating a veggie burger, and looked over to see a guy with a certain haircut and style to his beard eating chicken wings. He was wearing black slacks and a white button down shirt of a certain kind. For my part, I'd put on a certain style of stretchy dress and styled it to look funky rather than frum. We smiled at eachother like, "ex-Orthodox? Fuck yeah, ex-Orthodox."
That is ALSO a part of the purpose of a code of dress. Even the remnants in your wardrobe communicate something.
In my opinion, whom you allow access to you and your body is a deeply personal choice, and it really, really needs to remain that way for reasons of equity and personal liberty.
Be careful about any modesty debate. Debate implies there's a right answer. Codified modesty can become a very sneaky way for a culture to control women -- speaking from personal experience!
Even though men can also practice veiling and modesty, even though I logically believe that it doesn't have to be this way, it's extremely important for any community debating the practice to create that sense of community cohesion to be aware of "a modest woman must" as a potential pitfall and slippery slope. It's not unavoidable, we just need to be aware.
If you're going to hash out meaning, it might be interesting to work out something like a veiling hanky code, where another pagan can peg you as a (1) a pagan/witch (2) from a certain tradition (3) a devotee of whatever deity.
Just a few random thoughts.
for pagans/witches who veil or cover their hair for their practice full time, do yall consider modest clothes essential to your veiling or do you still wear what you want? i’ve seen this debate among the community and am interested in seeing what everyone has to say!
for reference i do veil for my practice, just not everyday and i tend to still wear what i want but with limitations!

It's necessary for extraction. Most of the things that are medicine in the recipe are nearly insoluble in water. That's especially true both of the lemon peel/pith and the turmeric.
I know that some traditional cures involving turmeric use milk to extract, which works because it contains water (non-polar) and fat (polar) in a colloid.
It therefore follows that this should work well for the lemon peel as well. You might just have to be extra careful to remove the fruit part so the milk doesn't curdle.
Also, it will be less powerful for extraction, so heat would be needed. The times given in the recipe above should be sufficient.
It's always important to have a non-alcoholic alternative.
Wee little cold remedy.
Juice two lemons well, and then slice the peel thinly. Set the juice aside for another purpose. It's the pith that you want.
Slice two inches of ginger and two inches of turmeric root
Add a tablespoon of whole star anise and a tablespoon of whole clove.
Add ingredients to a cheese cloth or mesh bag, and put in a very large mason jar.
Fill the jaw with cheap whiskey and leave overnight.
Take a tablespoon every two hours.
Good for respiratory colds. You can also add cayenne.

personal shit: tw: dv. But also Artemis being a BAMF, and the gods being helpful.
I am in a domestic violence situation, and have been for two decades. I have a beautiful, wonderful lover who is not my abuser. They are everything to me. I also have two children.
Hermes tried to fix it by possessing him. It did not work. Apollon tried to fix it by sending me a beautiful young lover, but they just got sucked in with me. Dionysos tried to fix it by making my father see how awful he was, but my father chose not to help.
He makes the money. It's a financial abuse situation. Three people are stuck under his thumb, including me. He has destroyed our lives.
Here's the funny part.
Artemis: "You need a new provider... are you ok with a man?"
Me: "a cis man?"
Artemis: "WHERE WOULD I, OF ALL PEOPLE, FIND A CIS MAN?! No, a transman, clearly."
Me: "Yeah, that's good. Like, I'd just like to avoid a non-queer partner."
Artemis: "Or a stone butch. You ok with a stone butch?"
Me: "Stone butches are delicious."
Me: "Wait"
Me: "What if this person is in tech, and is just like.... better than my ex at his career. Like. Promoted to the position he wanted and could never have."
Me: "He, she, they, don't care. As long as whoever it is isn't fat-phobic, or mean."
Me: "And whoever it is gets to be in the poly triad that my ex wanted."
Artemis: :D
Artemis: :D :D
Artemis: "I will do my best to make that happen on the grounds that it would be fucking hilarious."

Those of you up in arms because people wrote stories about your gods, and now younger people are treating them like fictional characters....
I gotta ask. Is that really more damaging to your religion than someone who believes in the gods and proclaims from the highest mountain that they exist to torment humanity?
You DO know that half of the ancient sources you use to understand the ancient gods are fiction, right? The comedies? The tragedies? The plays written to celebrate festivals for Dionysos?
Anything that gets people interested in a positive way is a good thing. Go touch grass.

Thinking of Hephaestus’s angry speech against Ares and Aphrodite in the Odyssey
Tumblr media
Specifically about how he claims the Aphrodite cheated bc of his disability, now one could dismiss this as him just being dramatic and trying to rationalize why his wife would treat him this way. But at the same time… we know how violently ableist Ancient Greece was, we know how ableist the Greek gods are, not just with Hera throwing Hephaestus as a baby for being lame but also the gods laughing at him bc of his limp in Iliad book 1 (it’s not specified which gods specifically tho):
Tumblr media
Or Zeus straight us saying he’s disgusted by his limping (he also mentions how he’s covered in soot but he mentions the limping first) in Lucian’s Dialogue of the Gods:
Tumblr media
Hephaestus obviously has a lot of internalized ableism but if what he says about Aphrodite is true… then that’s just more evidence that she was the one in the wrong imo.
