Yarrow is such a winter beauty 鉂勶笍
Yarrow is known scientifically as Achillea millefolium. The name Achillea refers to Achilles, who was trained in the art of healing wounds on the battlefield. Yarrow, a styptic, can be applied to wounds to stop bleeding. Millefolium means "many leaves" - the fine, feathery cut leaves covered in frost seem to swirl below clusters of composite white flowers. I get lost in the unfolding details when I take a moment to sit with yarrow.
I feel really grounded and resilient when I hang out with yarrow. I could attribute it to the number of medicinal benefits on digestion, brain health, and inflammation, and there is definitely something to that. But this feeling of groundedness is felt strongly "just" sitting with yarrow. Yarrow is always there. All winter I can say hi. Thank you Yarrow for being soft under my feet and reminding me to look closer at the details that I may otherwise overlook.

Here is a design I did for my Design II class last term. This design was made with children in mind. Views of plants with year-round interest from the back sunroom, a hot tub, playground, dining area, and xeriscaped front yard incorporating a dry creek bed are all components of this design. The clients are handy with woodworking and it was fun to get excited together about the possibility of them creating a natural play space for their child to grow up and learn in. https://www.instagram.com/p/CoinaCgPAj6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here are more pictures from the design I posted a couple posts ago. I realized the design is really too big to take in without it being broken down. I hope you enjoy these close ups! There are two steep dry slopes on either side of the house, a shaded dry forest, and a sun-blasted front yard. This design incorporates native plantings to provide habitat and reduce erosion in the dry slope and forest areas. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClZa82nS-_I/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

FREE LAND ACCESS FOR BIPOC GROWERS I live with a few close friends on an acre and we have had a goal since the beginning of living (fall of 2019) for the land to be freely available to the BIPOC community. COVID, the ice storm that downed trees all over the land, and societal upheaval caused us to shift priorities and we are now getting back to this original goal. We are in the Milwaukie/Gladstone area, near the Willamette and Clackamas rivers, about 25 minutes from central PDX. No area of the yard is entirely flat so large amounts of row crops are not so much an option but perennials, mushroom cultivation, fruit trees, animal husbandry, things we haven't thought about yet etc. are all possibilities here. Most of the land is shaded but there are patches of sunny area. The growing space is free and we have some tools and a toolshed. You would be taking care of your own plants and space but there is possibility to harvest some of the existing herbs as well (there is sometimes way more than we can use). There are dogs, cats, rabbits, and soon possibly goats here. The people who live here are Indigenous and white. There is a bathroom inside as well as an outdoor toilet if that feels more comfortable. We would love to host people with short or long term projects. We would love for you to share with your BIPOC kin. Unfortunately we do not have enough room to house people due to our neighbor reporting our living structures. Feel free to reach out via DM with questions/concerns/interest! I love hanging out with plant nerds and getting excited about the deep blue (and rarely, white) of camas and the pink of rosy plectritis. The wind blows and it looks like waves of sunset reflected water. Such a small area to remind of the vastness that once was when Indigenous people interacted with the land without the destructive presence of colonization. Now white people flood to these little preserves and pretend like we are saving something. As if our ancestors didn't take the camas fields for granted. As if they came to this land and didn't just see dollar signs in their eyes when they realized the floods brought such fertile soil here. It is an honor to nerd out about camas because it is still here. But we can't stop at thinking we have the power to protect what little is left. Are we protecting areas in wealthy and white areas like West Linn to stroke our own ego and stopping there, or are we going to truly support land back? Blackberry can be overwhelming, enveloping large areas with grit and tenacity. You know the fear that sets in when blackberry's sharp thorns take hold of you, riping your clothes and snagging your skin. Maybe a thorn gets left behind, reminding you of how even the tiniest thorns can take down the strongest person with the right angle and pressure. Many people choose to steer clear or irradicate. As for me I am not trying to get rid of them, per se, but they get in the way of living sometimes and I will cut them back for the rabbits to eat. Every single time I cut some blackberry vines I experience pain. The pain is less if I twirl away from a blackberry hold rather then pull. Summer mornings I am up early, trying be outside when it is still cool, and hunger sets in. I always remember the berries, first strawberries, then raspberries, blueberries, blackberries. A breakfast delight. Worth all the snags. No pain to be found in the berries, just sweetness. The more blackberry grows thorns, the more berries there are. There is so much painful uncertainty. There is also so much sweetness. There is both and. Experiencing joy does not turn a blind eye to pain. Experiencing pain does not stop the berries from bursting with liquid sweetness. I haven't sent out an availability list for awhile because of the heat wave and letting the plants recover from it.聽 Although summer can be a challenging time to transplant, there are a lot of new varieties available and you can take it upon yourself to decide聽if you want to transplant or not!聽聽 DM for availability Tips for summer transplanting: - Transplant in the evening, and if you can't do it in the evening, do it as early as you can in the morning.聽 Try to find the most overcast day in the forecast.聽聽 - Transplant into shaded areas if the weather is predicted to be above 85 degrees for more than a few days in a row.聽 This is my general聽rule of thumb聽but it is all dependent on the type of plant and聽how much heat it can tolerate.聽 You can make a shade structure to help your plant adjust if you are planting into an area with full sun.聽 If it is much hotter, like say 115 degrees, hold off on transplanting until cooler weather. - Water the seedling and the area you are transplanting into before transplanting.聽聽 - Use mulch!聽 Mulch is your friend!聽 Wood chips, straw, and leaves are examples of organic matter that help retain moisture, improve your soil structure, and increase microbial growth, making your soil more alive!聽 Mulch creates good soil aggregates for holding water and is a layer of protection for the soil from the sun's dryness and the rain's erosion. This fall and next spring, I will be sending out availability lists every few weeks to once a month, to make room for other responsibilities in my life.聽 Thank you for being understanding while I try to figure out how to realistically continue access to seedlings through delivery services. All plants are half off for BIPOC.聽 Please reach out for free plants as reparations for BIPOC community garden projects.聽聽 (at Unceded Chinookan Territory) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjTyeJhJcF/?utm_medium=tumblr

These next couple growing seasons are going to be hectic. I have started going to school for landscaping design and am working for a small landscaping company doing maintenance, making base maps, and installing hardscapes. I started doing plant deliveries at the beginning of the pandemic because retail nurseries were not purchasing and I was laid off from my job. I have been thinking about how much it increased accessibility to the seedlings, and also how it may not be realistic to expect of myself that I can do weekly deliveries next spring. So until I have more of a realistic sense of my capacity I will continue to love dirt and filth and try to give you all as much head's up as possible about changes. Plants will continue to be half price for BIPOC growers and my dms are always open to supply free seedling to BIPOC community garden groups. @cubmoth always makes the cutest and most relatable little drawings <3 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ4S8QQh7Ma/?utm_medium=tumblr
