What are ‘the Commons’?
From the hackacamp programme: The idea of the Commons has many different applications - old and and new. An extensive list from On The Commons’ magazine includes National Parks, Open Source Software, Wildlife and Blood Banks. The Commons and Economics conference held in Germany in 2013 organised itself into several different areas of activity that the Commons applies to - Land and Nature, Working and Caring, Knowledge/Culture/Science, Money/Markets/Value & ‘Infrastructures for Commoning’.
I identify the commons as those resources which I feel should be shared, free, and accessible to all;whether that is public space, vital resources, art or culture. The Creative Commons movement seeks to create a culture of open licenses, in which content creators can place their work ‘out there’ whilst still maintaining some ownership, whether that is for completely open use, for non-commercial works only, or in non-derivative forms. Meanwhile community groups across the UK, Europe and in fact the world, fight for ownership over common areas and public spaces, calling for self governance and a freedom from increasingly commercialised “public” spaces.

Getting ready to #reclaimthecommons at #17ZEMOS98 in Seville. I’ll be posting via hackacamp through the next 4 days (as well as reblogging here no doubt!) Go easy on me, I’m new to Tumblring. I also don’t know the verbs and nouns associated with tumblr, so I’ll be making them up as I go along, deal with it.

Quote
“The general approach of the hackers in dealing with the outside world is not accepting the limits that are given to you once you approach something. The hackers are engaged citizens and artists by default. If you are a hacker, you are ethical by design”
Tim Pritlove of the Chaos Computer Club in Berlin during Ars Electronica 2008.
