Anyone watching Nope noticed how similar the posters for the real movie “Holes” (2003) are to the movie in the movie Kid Sheriff ?

I mean, look at them:

Given Jordan Peele’s attention to details, and how quite a part of Holes’ plot is about “not fucking with nature, especially for greediness” (Lizards in that case), I doubt it’s coincidental.

Also worth mentioning the whole plot of Barlow and Sam, although I’m not articulate enough at the moment to really say how it ties into Nope’s themes as well.

Being not skinny in the 2000s was hell. I know he was going through it.

i just realized something about Holes the book and also Holes the movie

It always felt a little inconsistent to me—why do so many characters treat Zero so differently from the way they treat the other boys? The adults at camp don’t have a lot of respect for any of the boys but with Zero they don’t even try to hide it. Mr. Pendanski—the “touchy feely” counselor—says the cruelest, most insulting shit to Zero right in front of everyone, and doesn’t seem to care who hears it.

Pendanski is at least pretending to be a child psychologist. Even though he’s defrauding the state, you get the sense he likes to think of himself as a half-decent therapist. So why doesn’t he make “showing Hector Zeroni a semblance of basic human respect” part of his good-social-worker act?

it’s because Zero’s mentally disabled. That’s why Pendanski doesn’t bother—even the respectable doctors won’t expect Pendanski to acknowledge Hector’s agency. It’s why none of the adults seem surprised that Zero can’t read, and why they assume he could never learn. It’s why everyone treats him with equal parts pity, contempt, and neglect. It wasn’t inconsistent characterization it was ableism the whole time

fascinating to watch society increasingly work itself into contortions about how to make a principled distinction between boy tits (pedestrial!) and girl tits (taboo!) because even as the rigid gender binary is slowly chipped away, we can’t handle the fact someone somewhere might be turned on

some breast cancer survivors have breasts but no nipples; are their chests nsfw? if they have their nipple transplanted to their forehead, must it be covered? if i have my nipples moved to my forehead but then later acquire tits via hrt or breast implants, then are they nsfw? why is a trans man’s chest post top surgery sfw but not pre? why is a flat-chested woman’s chest never sfw? what if someone refuses to disclose their AGAB? must they wear Schroedinger’s Sports Bra at all times? if someone transitions, has top surgery, then decides to go back to identifying as a woman, does their chest become NSFW again, or does it remain SFW?

so many philosophical questions! and what a waste of human brain power and technical ability to spend it all on arcane points of content moderation. at what point does this all become such a drag on our economy, that we have to jettison our hangups or else permit innovation to grind to a halt?

American transgender performer.

Venus Xtravaganza (22.05.1965 - 21.12.1988)

She came to national attention after her appearance in Jennie Livingston's 1990 documentary film Paris Is Burning, in which her life as a trans woman forms one of the film's several story arcs.

On Christmas Day in 1988, Xtravaganza was found strangled under a bed at the Duchess Hotel in New York. It was estimated that her body had been there for four days before discovery. Shooting for Paris Is Burning was ongoing, and the film's final minutes include Angie Xtravaganza reacting to her death. Angie Xtravaganza said she felt that Venus was one to take too many chances, that she "was too wild with people in the streets", and that she feared "something going to happen to." Angie Xtravaganza was the first person detectives approached with the news of Xtravaganza's death, and it was she who broke the news to the latter's biological parents.

In Paris Is Burning, Xtravaganza describes a time she narrowly escaped an attack by a man who discovered she was transgender during an intimate encounter, and it is possible her murder occurred during a similar situation. Her killer was never found.I She is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey. She was 23.
