Northern Gannets, Cape St Mary’s, Newfoundland, Canada 1986 Transparency film Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve is an ecological reserve located near Cape St. Mary's on the Cape Shore, on the southwestern Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. It is home to one of Newfoundland's largest seabird colonies. The reserve is home to northern gannets, black-legged kittiwakes, common murres, and thick-billed murres, as well as dozens or hundreds of razorbill, and black guillemot breeding pairs. During the breeding season, more than 30,000 Northern Gannets crowd around on the top of a giant sea stack (aptly named “bird rock”) and neighbouring clifftops – making it the third largest colony in North America. Incredibly, visitors can view these majestic birds from as close as twenty meters as they go about their business of making nests, raising young, and performing their beautiful “sword crossing” rituals. In addition to the numerous birds, humpback whales may be viewed from the heights during the annual capelin run. (at Newfoundland, Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQdtC1pL5dU/?utm_medium=tumblr

‘Cypress Knees’ Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura) are one of the most interesting birds in North America. Their subtle beauty and haunting call can be mesmerizing. "The Mourning Dove is the most widespread and abundant game bird in North America. Every year hunters harvest more than 20 million, but the Mourning Dove remains one of our most abundant birds with a U.S. population estimated at 350 million. The oldest known Mourning Dove was a male, and at least 30 years, 4 months old when he was shot in Florida in 1998. He had been banded in Georgia in 1968." “Cypress Knees” "A cypress knee is a distinctive structure forming above the roots of a cypress tree of any of various species of the subfamily Taxodioideae. Their function is unknown, but they are generally seen on trees growing in swamps. Some current hypotheses state that they might help to aerate the tree's roots,[1] create a barrier to catch sediment and reduce erosion, assist in anchoring the tree in the soft and muddy soil, or any combination thereof.” (Wikipedia) (at Sweet Briar College Historic District) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJLolT8FCkb/?igshid=196fpg2yzmh6g
