Terminus Est
I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, and I’ve reached a decision on what I want to do with this blog: I’m going to be pulling the plug.  I’ve reached the point where I find role-playing on tumblr to be exceptionally stressful.  It’s gone from being something I enjoy doing to being an obligation; it’s gone from being a hobby to being a job.
Some of it is the format.  Role-playing on tumblr is slow, energy-intensive, and always seems to be struggling because of the platform being run by buttholes.  Most of it is the people, though.  The role-playing communities don’t feel like communities anymore; it turns out that letting anxiety and paranoia shape policy for a social activity like role-playing was a bad idea.  Who knew?
To those who’ve helped make fond memories, I thank you.  It’s been wonderful, and you’re always welcome to come poke me on Discord if you want to reminisce.
To those who’ve tried to fuck me over, thanks for letting me live in your head rent-free for so long.  I sincerely hope you get the help you need to be a better person.
To the Ironwood stans and Ace Ops apologists, good job making people who live in genuine fear of real-world authoritarian police states nervous around you.  Maybe reconsider your life choices.  This video is a good place to start.

If it wasn’t obvious, I’ve basically gone back on hiatus.  I can’t promise that I’m going to be coming back, either -- staying off tumblr has reduced my stress tremendously.  I’m still actively RPing on the RP Nexus Discord server, so feel free to stop by if you want to join in.
PS: The server is 18+, but please don’t take that to mean that it’s a smut server.  It’s just a place for adults to RP without having to worry about minors.

“Not our fault they abandoned us in the ruins of our home for scavengers to find us.” Qrow said with a little shrug. “If they have a problem with who we turned out to be… Well…” Qrow trailed off because he couldnt really say he blamed them. One of their darling twins had turned out to be a bandit queen, and the other a drunken disappointment. “I cant say I’d be surprised if they didnt care for us based on just the merits, but we sort of earned that one.”
Qrow also wasnt sure he wanted to go anymore, now that that possibility was out there. Speaking things like that out loud was a sure way to jinx them. He wasnt certain what a rejection from their next of kin would do to Raven, but he also didnt want to risk finding out.
Tumblr media
Qrow grabbed his arm, and looked down at a spot a little to the right of Raven’s boots, a grimace on his face asnhe contemplated this new wrinkle.
Tumblr media
“Qrow, you’re not being fair,” she tells him, rather bluntly.  “Neither of us can clearly remember what happened back then, and you’re just letting that whole “I’m cursed and no one can possibly love me” part of your brain drive you to assume the worst about things.”
Tumblr media
“For all we know, our parents could have been comatose in a hospital for so long that by the time they woke up we’d been spirited halfway across the continent by the tribe.  There are a million possible explanations for why they didn’t find us first, so don’t go trying to feed me some horseshit about our parents not loving us.  You might not remember them, but I do -- and I can remember how much they loved us.”

“I can honestly say I have no idea what my birth name is.” Qrow said with a shrug and put the papers away and handed them to Raven. “And barely remember the childhood name they gave me until my semblance came in and they came up with a much more fitting adult name. Lets see… That would be at least twenty five, maybe thirty years. I cant go back after that.”
Tumblr media
“Exactly,” she says, picking her cup up with one hand and accepting the papers with the other.  “For better or worse, the kids these papers are talking about...they’re not us.  That’s not who we grew up to be.”
Tumblr media
She plops the papers right back down to have a steadying drink of her tea.  “Maybe that’s what worries me the most.  That we go meet these people, and they can’t accept Qrow and Raven Branwen.”

“I suppose you’re alright as a sister.” Qrow teased. “Better than having a Deathstalker for a sister, anyways, but only barely.” He glanced back down at the certificates in his hands.
“I doubt there’s any chance our parents have an estate or anything left for us. I dunno about you, but I’m fine with this particular set of twins staying dead. Seems like too much hassle.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I’m not exactly thrilled about the prospect of trying to reclaim that particular identity,” she admits, looking at her own death certificate.  “I mean, my death certificate might as well be genuine.  The Matriarch gave me a new name and a matching wardrobe the day we showed up at the tribe, and I’ve been Raven ever since.  I know it wasn’t as extreme a change for you, but you’ve been Qrow for how many years now?”

“Actually… well, I never really put much thought into parents.” Qrow admitted. “There was the boss, there was the guy who worked with me on making Harbinger and learning to fight… But until Oz came along, there’s really no one who I would consider a parent.” Ozpin stuck out just from how much work he put into the Twins, and how he continued to support them.
“It would be pretty ironic if our folks got mixed up on the wrong end of some criminal enterprise, or some secret conspiracy like us. I might be inclined to think we’re actually cursed.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, well, it’s a curse that came with a pretty cool blessing,” she says, patting Qrow’s hand.  “I know we don’t always see eye to eye on things, but I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better brother.  They’d have given me somebody like Tai, and then I really would have to murder somebody.”
Of course, she has a lot that she could say about the idea of Ozpin being a parental figure, but...it’s probably best that they leave that particular can of worms unopened.

He nodded and reached over to gently touch Raven’s shoulder. “I can only imagine.” Qrow said softly. “If you want to go again, you know I’d go with you. I know how much this means to you.” While Qrow had only a passing interest in their origins, there was something in his gut that told him that this should be something that the twins did together.
“Its not like you dont know how to find me.” he joked, nudging Raven slightly.
Tumblr media
Raven takes a second to regain her composure after all that, and Qrow’s hand on her shoulder helps.  “Yeah, I do want to go visit them at some point,” she says, nodding as she looks back to Qrow.  “And I want you there with me.  One of us being the spitting image of our parents is a coincidence.  Two is impossible to ignore.”
Tumblr media
“And who knows?  Maybe they know the truth of what happened to Mom and Dad.  They could still be out there somewhere,” she says, leaning forward onto her arms.  “I know you consider the people who raised us in the tribe to be our parents, but it was never that easy for me.  I guess I just remember too much.”

“One who fell into the thresher?” Qrow asked with a raised eyebrow, looking at the woman who was supposed to be their mother. Apparently their matrilineal line ran particularly true for at least three generations of Branwen women (Qrow had a hard time conceptualizing himself as anything other than a Branwen).
“Unless our parents ended up in the Tribe with us without actually claiming us as their kids, I wouldnt know where they ended up either.” He admitted, handing the photo back to Raven. “Its not like they were working for Oz and went on some secret mission. Is there any record of next of kin, or maybe godparents? They cant have existed in a vacuum.”
Tumblr media
Raven doesn’t particularly like Qrow’s attempt at a joke about falling into a thresher, and resists the urge to just dope-slap him.  No, she’ll just focus on the issue at hand.
Tumblr media
“Well, yeah.  The documents I found did mention some next of kin, and I dug into them a bit while I was there.  We have some family living in Kuchinashi, although I didn’t try to contact them,” she explains, digging through the stack of papers to find a small slip she’d written names and addresses on.  “I’ll admit, I was feeling a bit raw when I last visited, and I didn’t have it in me.”

“Guess Hunting is in the blood then,” Qrow chuckled and took a deep breath, and pulled out the copies of the death certificates. He didnt linger long on the twin boys - Qrow wouldnt have even recognized his birth name, let alone which one was supposed to be his - and turned instead to the parents.
He thought that maybe seeing the names on the page might spark something, some long forgotten memories or maybe a feeling of connection. But in the end, it was just ink on the page. He and Raven were too far removed from whatever life that could have been for Qrow to even feel more than a passing sense of regret for what could have been.
“Did it give you the closure you were looking for?” he asked with a raised brow.
Tumblr media
Now there’s the sixty-four lien question, and it’s not one Raven is really sure that she’s ready to answer.  “Not at all.  They obviously didn’t find our bodies when they went looking for us, and we were a couple of dumbass kids,” she says, putting her teacup aside for a moment.  “They never found our parents, either, and they were both retired Huntsfolk.  Our mom also had enough chrome to make Ironwood look downright human, so it’s not like something just gobbled up her body.”
She reaches over to the envelope and pulls out a picture of the woman in question.  She looks a lot like Raven, though she’s as much of a beanpole as Qrow -- and as Raven had indicated, she’s very heavily augmented.  “Part of why I knew they weren’t just rice farmers,” she says as she hands the photo to Qrow.  “What the hell kind of rice farmer ends up needing that kind of reconstructive surgery?”

“Its… Less a personal interest in them as it is me trying to check in with you.” Qrow said with a sort of half shrug, and he took the envelope from her. “Last I knew you were still looking.” He opened the envelope and hesitated before diving in.
That hesitation lasted far longer than it should have. Qrow was perhaps a bit more nervous about finding out the results of Raven’s research than he expected. “Suppose it might be nice to have some idea of who Yang’s grandparents would have been.”
Tumblr media
Raven takes a seat across from her brother and pours herself a fresh cup of tea.  “I went looking for them around Mothers Day.  I, uh...didn’t have anything else to do, and just needed some closure,” she admits with a shrug.  “Not sure why it was bothering me, but I went back home and dug through the Hall of Records.”
"I had a solid enough memory of when and where we were when we got separated from our family that I was able to find all that, as well as a family shrine in the local graveyard,” she explains.  The first things out of the manila envelope would be copies of four death certificates: a mother, a father, and twin boys.  All four of them listed as missing, presumed dead.  “We were born in a small farming village not far from Kuchinashi, though our parents were...well, we’ll say that they couldn’t have been any more obvious about being retired Huntsfolk if they tried.”
