The History of 3D Animation

The finished Animation

Here is my finished animation:

The finished Animation is okay. I feel like the quality of the images aren't very good though. However i am happy with it, this was my first ever 3D animated world and I learnt a lot about the software through this experience. I think the second cat (black one) doesn't look very good, as it blends in too much with the buildings in the city, this makes it hard to tell what it actually is when you watch the animation. If i was to re-do this animation i would change the cats position add more textures to my objects as i feel they are a bit too plain and repetitive.

Working on the animation:

Throughout the modeling part of this project I used my map and my mind maps to refer to.

I started by making mountains, I used multiple sized spheres and edited them to make a mountain shaped object.

I did a similar thing to make the tree, but i added a cylinder for the trunk of the tree. 

I made a lake but making a cube and then cutting out a lake shape.

I then made a butterfly using 7 spheres. 

I made a flower in a similar way.

This flower took multiple attempts, getting the leaves to be how i wanted them to be was difficult.However i was happy with the smoother design.

I originally wanted to make my own grass, but having my grass as objects made the maya file too big and caused the program to crash. Later i ended up using the paint too.

I added colours to my objects

I then made 2 cats, this was hard to do, but i did it by editing multiple spheres together. I then coloured them, using black on one and a gradient of colours on the other one.

I then used the paint brush tools to try out each grass tool until i found one i liked. 

After finding a grass i liked i moved on to making the city. I used cubes and made them different sizes, i then cut out windows and cubes that were slightly thinner then the original cubes and i added these so that you could see them in the window holes. 

I added a moon and sun to my animation and i animated them to go up down throughout my animation to show day and night. 

I then started to animate the camera, so it followed the path i had planed it to. 

I also animated the cats and butterfulys so they moved too. 

I then added a light in front of the sun that moved with the sun, so it got lighter and darker at the correct times.

I exported each frame at 24 fps, this took a while. 

I then edited them together in ‘premiere pro'. I added a blue background colour and edited the brightness to it would be brightest when the sun was a darkest in the ending of the animation, to show nigh time.

Mapping my World

Here are some quick sketches i have done of my world. Including all 4 zones of my world in order. 

The map:

This includes the journey of coming out of the first tunnel, going in front of the mountains, then around the lake, through the flower field, in front of the city and the into the tunnel.

Lighting:

Here is where my sun is going to be at the midday part of my animation/ around the lake part, The sun rises as your going around the mountains and then sets while going in front of the city.

The train movement:

This map shows the movement the train will take.

The Camera angles:

This shows the angles the camera will be at, This may change when i get to animating.

Noticing delight:

To me noticing delight has always been accidental. For example, Looking up and seeing a beautiful sunrise and having a happy feeling, a feeling of hope as I notice the world can be beautiful. The idea of purposely going out and seeking the feeling of delight is a new idea for me. I plan to go and look for something that makes me feel delight every day for a week and see what I discover and see if it makes my week go differently.  

Recording Delight:

Artist have recorded there feelings of delight through paintings, music, literature, etc.

Making a room - maya

Day 1

I researched how to make a room using the videos that Gary made on youtube.

This is a quick plan of the room i want to make:

I started off by creating a cube and transforming it to a thin rectangle. I then created cuts to the object and used the extrude tool to pull up walls. I then used the multi cuts tool to create a window. I then deleted the space to create an open in the wall. I then extruded the edges to cover the space in hollow wall. 

I then used the uv tools to make a uv net. This was to make the net come together correctly, almost like making a cube out of paper.

I then made the bed, starting with a cube and making cuts and extruding parts to make the right shape.

 I then made a side table, I ended up remaking this later on

Day 2

I decided to remake the side table and also make the desk and chair:

The chair was a bit of a challenge for me as it was a more detailed object then the other ones i had created.

Making a shape, second try:

vertI started with a box shape:

I then grew the shape to a large cuboid, I used the multi cut tool and made a cut along the middle of the top of the shape. I then used the vertex setting to push the sides of the cube down to make the top of the shape a triangle:

  I then used the same multi cut tool to add the cuts to the shape to draw where the empty space would be in the letter. I then deleted the space and created this:

I had a problem where i couldn’t add the middle part of the A, the straight line so I had to add it as a separate object, This became a problem later on,

my next step was to change the colour of the shape. I researched how to do this:

I tested out two different textures and i played around alot with textures and colours; 

^ this one was fully matte 

This one had a metallic texture, which was shown when moving around the object. 

I then tried my best to animated this object, but it was so difficult as I had 2 separate shapes together instead of 1 whole one, I tried to research how to combine these objects:

For some reason i couldn't fully work out how to make this all work. So when i was next in class i asked about it and i discovered that i didn't make the shape in the most efficient way. I was then taught about how to extrude lines and faces, so the object stays 1 object, I was also taught about how to make lines through the Multi cut tool that go through the entire shape.

This new information will be very useful when i make my Room in the next project.

My pervious experience with 3D animating.

I am very inexperienced in creating 3D animations. However due to another module having us create 3D animations, I did that module first to learn more about the software an how to create objects and animate them.

First try, trying to make a shape:

I decided I wanted to make the letter A as a shape, I found this very difficult, at the time when trying to make this shape i didn't have a lot of the valuable information i needed on how to use the software. The research i had done wasn't enough, I didn't know this at the time and i couldn't work out why i found it so difficult to make a simple shape.  

Here is my first try, trying to make the shape of the letter A:

This part alone took around an hour.

I felt i should try and start again.

Researching how to use Maya

The first mini project we have is to create a shape in MAYA, I have never used a 3D software before so i am a bit clueless about how this software works. 

I unfortunately missed a few weeks of lessons and i missed out on learning how to use the software in class, so researched how to using videos on Youtube.
