Reflective Piece
Animation is the only artistic field to incorporate all the other art forms into one. As someone who has an interest in creation it has left me entranced at its limitlessness. However, this was never my first thought when starting Animation; I only found out at the end of my first year. It has taken me some time to find my main interests in this field. This module has not only helped me discover a little bit of the animation industry but also made me realise how competitive it actually is. Standing out and having a signature key skill set is crucial to getting a job. Therefore the key part is finding that style and developing it to a level that is capable of expressing anything the creator wishes to make. The trouble is finding that style. This is what made me struggle the most with this module.
My main purpose of starting animation was because I wanted to make video games. I didn’t really know what area exactly, but I would spend my days on ArtStation looking through digital artwork, models, illustrations, articles and more on video game design. My initial thought was to become a concept artist. However, as I progressed through Animation, I realised I had really lost my interest to make video games and I didn’t want to be part of that world or perhaps even the animation world in general. I started looking into changing courses to something more traditional like Fine Art, Illustration or Graphic Design. I also almost applied to study abroad so as to take a year away from animation and try something different. However, I eventually chose to stay because I realised I hadn’t really given Animation a chance. When I finally did, I found a whole world that excited me tremendously.
What caught my attention and what intrigued me was the more experimental side of animation that I had discovered at Pictoplasma. The more artistic and conceptual side of animation. Combining that with my interest in music I started researching animated music videos. This then led to me to decide my end goal: to be an Art Director. Nonetheless, this wasn’t the only aspect that made me reach that idea; it was also the fact that I’m very interested in Illustration, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion and Marketing. All of these aspects are involved in creating any animated piece, so this led to my wanting to be able to create an overall image and visual for a project. I then started researching Art Direction and realised that I would have to build my way up and gain the respect and appreciation of everyone so as to be trusted with such a task. I also came to this conclusion by looking at the aspects of animation that I didn’t find that interesting. For example, animating itself isn’t really what I enjoy doing most. I’d much rather design the environments or sketch out the different shots and angles I would like to use. I also prefer the endless possibilities of a 3D software than making puppets or cutouts for a stop motion animation. It has taken me a while but I’ve grown to like 3D programs such as Maya, Houdini and Mudbox and I can’t wait to learn more programs like ZBrush or Substance Painter.
The trouble now is deciding how I want my career in animation to commence. I would love to be a freelancer because it would give the flexibility I want in regards to choosing projects.  However, I feel like I should start off in a studio so as to obtain contacts and work experience in the industry, as well as meeting fellow artists and animators and find out what they’re are working on. This will help to build my portfolio and give it more weight. In addition, I think that I would work much better in a team rather than solo to start off with. Working in a team would help me get better at disciplining myself and producing artwork that I think is up to the standard. Going freelance is a step I would hope to take later on when I’ve learnt much more.
With this in mind I needed to decide what job role I wanted to start off in. I have chosen to go for something I’m still not that comfortable in, so as to acquire more knowledge about the pipeline process and to push myself into doing something I wouldn’t usually do. Therefore, I have chosen to become a 3D artist. I had considered concept art or storyboarding, but --having been drawing for quite a few years-- I felt like it would be more interesting to try 3D than to stick with 2D. Therefore, I need to brand myself as a 3D artist. Hence the decision to implement 3D models in my business cards and my social medias. As for my CV, I have based the design on my research of several 3D artists’ CVs. I have highlighted my creative skills by including a self-portrait based on a passport photograph instead of using said picture. It can also be seen on my Instagram and ArtStation accounts. This year I have been doing several graphic design jobs such as designing single artwork and t-shirts for a Swiss rock band called Bad Salmon. I have also been appointed head of marketing for the Northumbria Music Society, where I have redesigned the logo, made a coat of arms and designed all of the posters for the different events that we have been putting on. Although they are not 3D work, I have included them in my CV as they show creative skills. All of these projects are included on my website that I have designed. I have also bought a domain so as do look more professional.
This module as helped me understand much more about the animation industry and the many different roles I can choose to be. The roles that have caught my attention are being a concept artist, environmental artist, modeller, 3D artist, storyboard artist, VFX artist. What all of these have in common is that they all are digital roles. I definitely would like to work as a digital artist that can manipulate any software that is deemed necessary to approximate a brief that I have been given. Therefore, my showreel is catered to a digital portfolio consisting of several different 3D elements such as: environmental design, character design, experimental motion graphics and 3D modelling. I have researched several showreels in these categories and have adapted my showreel to fit all three. This way I can show I can work as any of these job positions. Establishing myself as a 3D generalist. I wouldn't want to specialise without trying any of them in a work environment first.
So after university I have thought one options would be to further my studies. After some research into postgraduate courses, I found a Music Composition postgraduate course at Edinburgh University. What I found most interesting is they will let me collaborate with the animation or the film department. Nonetheless, that’s not the only plan I have thought of. I have also been looking into internships at studios in Barcelona (my hometown) and Mexico City. The idea of going to Mexico was thanks to meeting someone at Pictoplasma last year, who took my details and was part of a studio called Sociedad Fantasma. I have also been thinking about going to New York too. This is due to seeing that The Mill have a studio there. I was really intrigued about the projects they were working on when they came to do a talk last year and I’ve been keeping an eye on them since then.
In conclusion, this module has really helped me start to think about what I want to do, what are the aspects of animation that I enjoy as well as what I want to achieve. I feel much more motivated thanks to having researched the various paths I can take. However I know this might not be my final decision and my mind could change at any moment, but it has definitely made me excited for all the different ways I can choose to go and the different fields I can work in. It has also helped me understand what it means to be a freelance artist as well as what working in the animation industry entails. It has given me a starting point and made me think of what I want my end goal to be as an artist, which until now I didn’t really know. I feel like I have slightly clearer view about where I want to be in several years time. It also fuelled my ambition even more and made me realize how difficult it’s going to be. However that only has given me more of a drive to be able to create in any medium that intrigues me and I can’t wait to see what I find next.

Festivals
https://offf.barcelona/
https://conference.pictoplasma.com/
http://motion-plus-design.com/
These are three festivals that I would love to send work to and attend
The first being OFFfest. This festival is held in Barcelona at the Museu de Disseny and all around the city. It´s not just a animation festival it combines all sorts of art forms. I was very intrigued by the motion designers and the graphic designers that were giving talks this year. Such as ManvsMachine, Conrad Roset and Ouchh. However it isn´t just conferences either. There are a series of workshops and activities that artists and students can partake in to learn new ways of creating. Next year is there 20th anniversary so I most definitely will be going.
Pictoplasma is one of my favourite animation festivals. I am lucky enough to have gone last year and I am going again this year. The festival really helped me get interested in the world of independent and experimental animation with conferences such as their psycodelic midnight mix. As well as the many screenings and  conferences they have all around Berlin. Which is a city full of art and history that suits the festival perfectly.
Motion Plus Design is slightly different to the other two as it changes city every year. It is also a festival that focuses more on motion graphics and is not as broad as the other two. Personally I didn´t find the location this year to be as interesting but I saw that in the last few years they have done it in Paris and Tokyo. The also give out an award each year. What interests me most about this festival is the guest speakers are really well known and have done award winning work. It is also a bit smaller of a festival since it only lasts one day but it looks really interesting.

Branding Sketches Development
Business Cards:
I decided to market myself as a 3D artist in the end. Therefore I added a piece of 3D art on the front. On the back there is some basic information a long side a logo.
Logo:
The logo I designed is based of the Japanese stamps that people used to credit their art. Since my name is really long I have abbreviated it to Max DSLT. On the sides of the square there is some sketchy drawings. This is usually my drawing style. I choose the colour orange because it contrasts well with the dark brown.

What I don't want to do
One of the main things this module has made me realise is the parts of the animation industry that I’m not that interested in.
I’m not really that interested in the animation itself. I do enjoy some sort of short animation and making something come to life. However, I don’t find it as enjoyable as modelling or designing something.
I don’t really enjoy any style of traditional animation like stop motion or hand drawn. Be it cut out or puppets I prefer the endless possibilities of using a 3D software.
I took me a while but I have really grown to like using various different 3D programs. I feel like I can build anything and just trap myself in my own world. Also because I really like the potential and the current aesthetics.

Thanks to the fact that I can speak 3 languages I would love to be able to travel and work in several different countries. Be it in any sort of creative industry. I do have some sort of future plans when I leave next year but these are still pretty long-term. I was thinking of moving up to Edinburgh to do my masters degree or to work in a studio.
I would love to be able to work in Mexico too. This is because I stared talking to this woman who worked in a small animation team there, whilst I was at Pictoplasma, and got my details. So I might send her an email and see what they could offer me. If they are still interested.

Showreels
3D Art Demo Showreel by Alpha

Motion Graphics Showreel by Atif Aziz

Environment Artist Showreel 2018 by Brian Vagie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uma6qi4pVk8
These three showreels show the three diferent aspects of animation that I find most intriguing.
3D Modelling I find really interesting and fun. The limitlessness of what you can make reality is really attractive and definitely draws me too creating more models in the future. Also in 3D modelling we can see that its mandatory to show the wire frame and non textured models so as to see how clean the model is. As well as how many polys it has. We can see how the artist includes characters as well as props.
3D Motion Graphics is something I have become really interested in recently. The sorts of animation and shapes and effects you can make I find fascinating. In these showreels it looks like you have to be able to show off how strange and innovative you are with your creations which is I find very interesting and definitely pushes experimenting with the 3D program that you work in.
Environmental Art is also something I really like. Creating environments in which you can establish a shot or tell a story I find very enjoyable. In these showreels it looks like you have to be able to show the amount of detail and how realistic you can make an environment.

Industry
Where do you see yourself sitting in the industry?
Anything that has to do with creation. Characters, Enviroments, Illustrations, Worlds, Stories, Visuals, VFX, Storyboarding. Therefore, I’m thinking about being an Art Director as my end goal. I’d love to be able to work on big projects.
freelancing or employment?
I think I would be much more suited to work as a freelancer. Since I would like to have a lot of different ongoing projects. However I feel like I should probably start of in a studio then make my way into freelance. Doing studio work will give me the contacts as well as the techniques and knowledge to then be able to become and independent artist.
what job roles and techniques interest you?
Art Direction would be the one I am most interested in. Since I am interested in a lot of different thing being an Art Director means that I get to touch upon everything. However, I would love to work as a storyboard artist, VFX artist, environmental artist, motion graphic designer, sound designer, concept artist.
Generalist or specialist?
I would consider myself a generalist. As I have stated before there are a lot of thing I am interested in and if I want to have a chance at trying them I need to be open to different environments. Also I would probably lose interest if I could only do one specific job. There isn’t any position I am positive I would enjoy spending years perfecting and becoming a professional at.

Personal Branding
Instagram:
Tumblr media
SoundCloud:
Tumblr media
These are the two sites I’ve been using the past two years. This is where I upload my personal projects as well as my uni work.
Instagram has a dedicated logo as I use it much more. However, Soundcloud has a photograph I took with a homemade pinhole camera as its cover photo. I wanted to try different approaches to decorating my image and to see which one I enjoy seeing the most.
I have also decided to market myself as a 3D Artist - Designer - Musician. This way I can take up any job I want inside of those realms as they are the ones that most interest me.
I am thinking on uploading work to Artstation but I want it to be 3D Artwork only. I do have an account but I haven’t uploaded anything yet.

I created a LinkedIn account too so as to expand my network of people in the animation industry. I decided to use a photo of myself instead of the profile picture I designed.
