When I was a kid - Dragon Ball Z
I think the first official Anime that I watched was Dragon Ball Z while it was airing on Cartoon Network. I started watching the TV show when I was 6 years old. Back then I used to go to a private school during the afternoons. So every Monday through Friday I would be in school from 12 pm to 7 pm. Now the funny thing about that was because I got home from school so late and I had a bed time of 9 pm I had very little time to do anything after I got home. Normally my nights would consist of getting home, having dinner and getting ready for bed. Homework and school projects were usually done on the weekends or early mornings before I went to school. However, I distinctly remember always staying up a little bit later than usual on Wednesday nights because that's when the next Dragon Ball Z episode usually aired. If by any chance I missed it I had the Thursday morning time of 11 to 11:30 to watch the episode again. I can’t count how many times my mom would get mad at me for staying up later or almost missing the bus because I was trying to sneak in the last little bit of the show before the school bus picked me up. I would sit on my bed with my school uniform on my belly with my arms supporting my head and starring at that tv like a hawk.
I think one of the greatest appeals for me was all the fighting scenes that the show was made up of. Almost every episode I was expecting a big fight scene between the characters of the anime. I think that was all there was to it, just the crazy fighting between the villains and the good guys. However, the power-ups like the Super Saiyan modes made it much more interesting. It’s funny because now when I watch it because I’ve seen so many different anime shows I don’t get as excited about it anymore. I have to admit their power-ups are historic though. I think every boy that grew up during the time the show was being aired can agree that you didn’t have a full childhood if you didn’t watch Dragon Ball Z’s super Saiyan fights right?. Personally, my two all-time favorite fights have to be Goku Vs Frieza and Gohan Vs Cell. I remember spending days talking about the fights with my friends at school. I also remember right after the Gohan Vs Cell fight was Halloween. I don’t think I’ve invested into a Halloween in my lifetime as much as I did during that one. I begged my mom to make the costume for me because they didn’t have any at the store. She got a bunch of purple sheets and literally made me the same outfit he wore. I gelled up my hair as much as I could to resemble the super Saiyan mode and we were off to the school Halloween costume. I remember getting so many compliments on it that for the next year I decided to go as Goku in super Saiyan Mode. Not to brag or anything but… I pulled it off so well. I think the most remarkable memory i had was getting into an argument with my mom over the tv show. I was sobbing at one point because all of the good characters were getting there butts whipped by the bad androids. I remember yelling something along the lines of “GOKU WHY AREN’T YOU KICKING ASS” when all of the sudden my mom came in a kicked my ass for yelling across the whole house haha. She got me back to reality at that point, but then I started explaining to her that Goku was the only one that could destroy the androids but he was injured so everyone was getting destroyed by the bad guys. It took a while but I started arguing how it wasn’t fare that the androids all of the sudden got stronger and spontaneously attacked everyone. All my mom could say was “grow up dummy… It’s a tv show”. Which just frustrated me even more. Thinking back now, I really did go crazy when I was watching the shows. Sometimes I would start jumping all over my bed over some battle that was happening. I would even have dreams that I was one of the characters turning into super Saiyan mode at school haha.

I heard they are incarnations of the sea devil. Supposedly, if you eat one, you will gain devil powers... but the sea will hate you and take your ability to swim!

One piece side story
So considering all of you are now aware of my obsession with anime. Let’s keep it going guys… Next up is One Piece. I can’t even begin to describe why this anime is so amazing. First, we have to appreciate that this show has been ongoing since 1999. That’s right, it’s been around for 18 years! Can you believe it? I was barely 4 years old during that time. And still every Thursday after my classes and work, I go home looking forward to watching the new episode that’s about to are online. Unfortunately, when I started watching it I was quite behind in the series. I can remember watching at least 3 episodes every day for about 2 months straight to try and catch up. Yea I know… you all prob think I’m crazy but this series is like 1000 episodes in haha. It’s fascinating because I remember going to my high school during that time and when people brought up anime during class or at lunch I always tried to get into the conversation somehow. The thing is no one really took me has an “anime” kind of dude. No body ever expected the high school basketball star to be looking forward to ending practice just to go home and watch the new episode of One Piece come out. Excuse my stereotype but honestly… like 95% of the people that went to my high school and also watched and talked about anime were Asians. Obviously I made it very clear in the anime talks that how huge of a One piece fan I was. Especially when it came down to the “Monstrous Trio” of The Captain Monkey D Luffy, the swordsman Roronora Zoro, and the Chef Sanji of the crew. The epic fight scenes these three have been involved in since I started watching the show have been incredible.
Despite the great fight scenes however, my greatest appeal to the anime comes from the diversification and unpredictability of the One piece characters and storyline. The fictional world of One Piece is basically governed by 3 major players. The Marines which are governed by the world government, the Shichibukai which are also managed by the world government and the Yonko which are the most powerful of the pirates at sea. Now what makes the characters involved in this anime so fascinating is the concept of Devil Fruits (Forbidden fruits found through the world), which are characterized into different types. Once you’ve eaten a devil fruit, you are granted a unique special power that you can manipulate, and in return you loose your power when you’ve made contact with water. Meaning devil fruit eaters can’t swim and will drown if not saved. Now there are tons of devil fruit eaters in all three parties. For the pirates, the main goal for the majority of all crews is to find the One Piece. A hidden treasure that was left by the Pirate King Gold D Roger before he passed away. There are still some extremely powerful non-devil fruit eaters that use “Haki” an ability to use spiritual energy, and life force to overcome enemies such as devil fruit eaters. This ability is found in every living thing in this fictional world, but some are more powerful than others and some fail to awaken it entirely. More on that if you watch the show haha. What’s truly amazing about this anime though is how is appeals to people of all different age categories. Very similar to Dragon Ball Z in that perspective. I have a habit of speaking to my little brother since he was 6 years old to now that he is 12 about One piece. We literally debrief after every episode we watch together. I think over the years I’ve now conceptualized this anime has like brother bonding between my little brother and I. He is as much of a fan as I am. We even bought the video games and all the movies to watch together. I feel like such a little boy, but oh well… I couldn't have it any other way.

Alchemy -  the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. However, it is not an all-powerful art. It is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given.
This is the law of equivalent exchange; the basis of all alchemy. In accordance to this law, there is a taboo among alchemists. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden. For what could equal the value of a human soul?

Fullmetal Alchemist Obsession - Short Story 1
Can any of you recall a time when you were a kid that you were extremely obsessed with something!? What’s the first thing that comes to your mind? I have to tell you, I bet you it doesn’t beat my obsession with anime. Name me any anime show and I bet you I’ve seen it. However, everyone’s gotta have their personal favorites... so here are mine. They have to come down to Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, One piece, Dragon Ball Z, and Full metal alchemist. Yea I know you see the pattern too, I’m a big shonen fan... Hell yeah I am!! I’ve seen some amazing anime shows during my few years on this earth but damn... these take it away by a mile. From the storyline to the crazy fighting scenes to the goofy animations and everything in between.    Let’s talk about Full Metal alchemist for a second… for those of you that aren’t familiar with the show. Essentially it’s an anime show about Alchemy (considered to be the scientific understanding of matter) and how alchemy can be used to deconstruct and reconstruct matter. This all revolves around one principle known as the “principle of equivalent exchange.” Now, this fictional world is governed by alchemist (essentially rogue or current military generals with special abilities) these abilities come from a deep understanding of chemistry and the ancient science of alchemy, as well as a natural talent for manipulating physical objects, transmutation circles, and energy. In this fictional world, things like human transmutation (applied by alchemist to bring back the dead, Similar to a resurrection), creation of chimeras (considered to be bio-alchemy that joins two dissimilar life forms into one... AKA MONSTERS), homunculus’s (artificially created humans using alchemy) and soul binding (joining a soul with an object) are possible. Now that we’ve passed all the must-knows, the storyline follows the development and experiences of two brothers (Edward and Alphonse Elric). They overcome some crazy homunculi enemies and have epic battles with other Alchemists in their attempt to undo the soul binding that happened to the youngest brother Alphonse. I don’t want to spill too much for those of you that haven’t seen it. All I can really say is that in my younger days, I didn’t differentiate between night and day because I would binge watch the whole season over and over again trying to determine what I missed the previous time I watched it. Definitely not a healthy obsession but damn it was so worth it. To this day I contemplate watching the whole series again, even though I’ve seen it over 5 times haha.  I have to admit my personal favorite of the two was Alphonse. I wanted to be like Alphonse so bad one Halloween a couple of years ago that I spoke to my friend who does welding to build me a suit of armor identical to his. In the end, I didn’t have the money to pay so I backed out... what a bummer. I would have rocked that soul binding armor like no other alchemists!
