So...Um, Notre Dame caught fire yesterday & Veronica is devastated.
Fair warning: this will be a topic on her blog. I will tag it Notre Dame Fire if anyone wants to blacklist it & not see that kind of content from me.

“I would like to sleep next to you for now, if you don’t mind...” Veronica replied meekly, staring up at the ceiling as she lay beside her mother.
"Mama?" Veronica whispered, crawling in the bed beside Claudia.

“What is it, Cheri?” Claudia questioned as she turned to face Veronica.

Veronica looked down curiously to observe the snow; captivated by how it seemed to be shimmering even though it was pitch black night outside. Instead of rolling the ball of snow to enlarge it, as her mother had suggested, she shoved one small chubby hand into the slush & quickly brought it to her mouth in attempt to taste it.
❄️ (From Baby!Ronnie)
Continuing to pack the snow in her hand, Claudia reached down to grab more. “You just keeping making the ball bigger until you can place it on the ground and roll it. Then you’ll have the bottom part of the snow man. You see, Veronica?”

“Oh, God, I’m so sorry.”  Cheryl shrank back, feeling like a terrible person for jumping to conclusions.  “I—I should really know better, Veronica.  I mean, I don’t have kids either.  Never could.  And….”  She gestured to the book.  “…and it’s really good that you’re learning to read.  Better late than never, I always say.”
She felt patronized by the other’s words. Nobody else except for Mama knew that she couldn’t read & she was so embarrassed. Ignoring the stinging urge to cry, she persisted. “Bon sang! Don’t patronize me, I’m not a child! I just...never learned to read. My people had no use for such thing. And...It’s so hard. I don’t think I’ll ever learn.” Veronica hung her head shamefully & tossed away the book, teary eyed.
"Hey, I remember you! Veronica, right?"
Startled, Veronica dropped the book that she had been reading & looked up to find the source of the voice. “Mon Dieu! Who sneeks up on people in a library?” She exclaimed with a snap in her voice.

Cheryl caught a glimpse of the cover of the book just before it disappeared behind Veronica’s back.  “Oh!  A children’s book,” she said brightly, breaking into a smile.  “I didn’t know you had children.”
Do all Americans make assumptions like this? She wondering to herself. “I don’t have children.” Veronica sneered, taken aback by the other woman’s blunt approach. She took the book from behind her back seeing as there was no sense in hiding it anymore.
Veronica gave a gesture a mixed defeat & annoyance. She rolled her neck & brought her hand down upon her thigh. ”If you must know, the book is for me.” She got up from her seat on the bench, very embarrassed & very annoyed.
“I do not know how to read.”

“Oh, crap, I’m sorry, Veronica!”  Cheryl, crestfallen, stooped to scoop up the book that had fallen to the floor.  “I didn’t mean to startle you.  I just remembered you and I greeted you a little too enthusiastically.”  Sheepishly, she handed back the book.
Veronica hurriedly snatched the book back, hoping Cheryl didn’t notice that it was in fact a grammar book, intended for children. “I just...” She folded her hands & the book behind her back. “I’m very busy.”
"Hey, I remember you! Veronica, right?"

Taking the gift, Claudia noticed a strange assortment of holes on the box. Not sure what the meaning of this was, she assumed it was her daughters failed attempted at wrapping. To her surprise she soon found a meaning to the holes when she opened the gift and found a kitten. “Veronica…..”
“Oh Mama!” Veronica said with excitement. She knelt down to pet the kitten & give Claudia an endearing smile. “I thought you would like it & I have SO wanted a pet!”
"I have a present for you, Mama."

“A present?” She repeated. “What sort of present?”

“Open it.” She handed her mother the gift. “You have to see for yourself.” Veronica smiled happily at Claudia; excited to see what thought of the present.

I think the sexiest thing on anybody is intelligence. I respect somebody who has a brain and wants to use it more than a pretty face and status.
