“People think intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is ‘You’re safe with me’ - that’s intimacy.”

Gonna work on that #33.
Tumblr media
Today is my 34th birthday. Last year, I shared 33 lessons I learned over 33 years; this year, I’m sharing with you 34 lessons I learned, or was harshly reminded of, this year alone because 2020 has been a shitshow and, simultaneously, an opportunity to grow: (1) Setbacks do not measure self-worth. (2) Regression will intensify realizations. (3) Moving away won’t take away the pain, but you have to keep moving if you seek healing. (4) Too often, critical thinking is critically missing. (5) The first step toward feeling like less of a shitpile is to stop living in denial. (6) Authenticity is a priceless commodity when individuality is a rarity. (7) Your connections can only go as deep as your conversations. (8) Hell is unrealized potential. (9) Mindfulness is mutiny against mass media. (10) Every obsession is a lesson in patience. (11) An apology does not erase a memory. (12) Your routine becomes your reputation. (13) FOMO is a form of self-betrayal because it denies the importance of your own reality. (14) Dogs are cats without an ego. (15) If you refuse to open up, get use to fucking things up. (16) Hate is dead weight. (17) Bad timing doesn’t mean stop trying. (18) Small pleasures deliver vital reminders. (19) Mother Nature tolerates us. (20) Your mood determines how much you let the world get to you. (21) Shame is a stupid game, played by people who want you to doubt yourself. (22) Few sentiments are deserving of permanence. (23) Personal space is more than physical. (24) Could-have-beens will construct your mental prison. (25) Believing “there’s always tomorrow” will someday let you down. (26) Nothing you learn is useless, but you can easily waste something useful. (27) Fear is like beer: too much of it and you lose all logic. (28) There’s no purpose to living a life that’s impersonal. (29) Financial success will never eclipse sincere friendship. (30) Your life plan is only as attainable as your attention span. (31) Nobody wants to be a nobody, but not everybody is willing to be somebody. (32) Pickles prove that being salty can sometimes be delicious. (33) Skepticism is an underrated form of flirtation. (34) You can’t live to 100 without being 34 for a while.

“There is no more important homework than reading. Recently, the largest-ever international study of reading found that the single most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time children spend reading books, more important even than economic or social status. And one of the few predictors of high achievement in math and science is the amount of time children devote to pleasure reading.”
