Nishiki Sugawara-Gallery talk
Last week I went to Nishiki Sugawara gallery talk. She created a series of work inspired by calligraphy and bacteria in petri dishes. She used sumi ink and acrylic paint to make each of these painting. Each painting included both black and white and then minimal brighter colors. Her work appeared very abstracted almost to the point that they might have lacked prior planning. Most of her pieces looked very different from each other, having different directions of brush work and organization of colors. In the talk she discussed how bacteria is everywhere, even we are bacteria. I believe she was connecting this to why she chose the size of her work. I do not believe I would understand her work without her speaking on it or her artist statement.

Artist I admire
I recently came across Sophie Mayanne’s instagram. She is a 24 year old artist that began capturing images of people revealing their scars. Beneath each photograph she includes their words explaining something related to the scars. Sometimes the stories explain the ongoing battle of accepting their beauty behind the marks and other times they reveal what caused these marking.  Having an unusual scar that I am uncomfortable talking about has made me realize the power this project has created. It not only glorifies the imperfection of every individual but also allows people to feel a sense of community knowing they are not the only one struggling with these issues.  Each image individually without the caption is not any phenomenal masterpiece, but the idea behind it all makes it what it is, and this is something I strive to understand to be able to create more meaningful art.

Key Artist Blog
My sisters painting mirrors the work of Ekaterina Panikanova. Panikanova is a Russian surrealist artist. She paints her images on a canvas made of books. After finding her work on Pinterest I recreated this canvas design to put my sisters image on. Just like her I am repurposing these books to tell a new story. I studied her installation and looked at the different ways she collaged her books to find what would work best for my goals. I also looked at her different methods of presenting the books and colors she used to paint them. I ultimately decided to glue down all the pages and on using only black, which is similar to many of her more recent work.

Materials Blog
The materials I am using to construct my canvas are symbolic of each person I am representing. My project is centered around three important aspects of my life that I believe each member of my family has taught me the importance of. These three parts are family love, health, and education. My mother is linked more to family, my father health, and my sister education. I decided to symbolically express these aspects by painting each person on a canvas constructed of materials linked to these ideas. Being of Italian heritage, my mother expresses love through food. She always makes sure everyone is full and therefore her piece will be painted on plates. My sisters portrait is on books, which needs less of an explantation as of how it is connected to education. My fathers portrait is on mirrors to express the importance of self-love for good health. Within these portraits I will be painting. I am going to use a mixture of painting techniques because of the challenge of painting on less porous materials.

Argent Work Gallery Talk
This talk showed us how Sali Christeson saw a problem, decided she wanted to fix it, then created an idea and brought it to life. Christeson graduated from Furman in 2007 and launched her women workwear collection Argent in 2016. In October Christeson came to Furman to tell us about her journey from graduation to Argent. Although she was more of the conceptual partner rather than the designer, she did discuss the innovative design elements. Their product stands out against other women workwear because it is more functional. The clothes have real and functional pockets. Revolutionary. She also explained the importance of creating a product more than just aesthetically pleasing. Argent clothing offers a handful of lever products such as a sown in glasses cleaner. Other than discussing this line Christeson talked about her company from the business perspective, which was good to hear but also went a bit over my head. But it did reinforce the idea that she could have never had a successful business without an artist.

Progress Report 5
Tomorrow I will be receiving 75 feet of hook and loop. This velcro should be able to support each of my books for my second portrait. I am excited for this painting. I did some practice doodles today to see how the paint will absorb into the paper. I have also arranged the books how I will install them onto the wall. So far I have not ran into any complications with this piece. As soon as the hook and loop arrives I can start projecting my painting onto the wall and begin painting.
On my last piece I am closing the gaps between the plates and am going to repaint my mothers face. I am having a difficult time putting the screws into the wood...not sure why...I just keep rearranging and pushing the screws in harder and that usually solves the problem. This should not be a problem in the actual installation.

Progress Report 4
I am having trouble progressing. I feel as if I have to take five steps backward to move on place forward. Its frustrating and it gives me doubt. (I never realized how doubtful of a person I seem to be until this project) Right now i have decided to unscrew all of my plates from my board and put them directly into the wall. This is how they will be assembled in the gallery, although since my studio place has drywall the screws will not latch into the wall. I broke another plate, therefore I cannot securely position them on my wall to see how it will look without breaking plates. McClain suggested using wall anchors but Brown said they do not come in a small enough size. Brown said I could put up wooden boards to make it like the studio wall but thats almost the same as I had before, which was too restrictive and small. I know assembling in the gallery will work it is just a matter of knowing visually what it will look like before that day comes. I am going to take a moment of reflection to come up with an idea to resolve this temporary issue. Now I am going to look at building my book canvas. I am going to look into how Eketerina Panikanova assembled her pieces. Also my sister will be home tomorrow so i can get her photograph earlier than expected!!! yippee.

Progress Report 3
We had our first critique. I am going to change a few elements about my work. Instead of securing the plates onto a board I will directly screw them into the displaying wall. This is a good change. Now there wont be a board behind them taking away from the painting itself. I am working on installing them into my studio wall. Another change is the background. I am going to remove the yellow because it is such a strong color that takes away from the portrait. I will either scratch off all the white or maybe put a shiny paint on all of the plates. I like the idea of a shiny plate because shininess symbolizes cleanliness which goes along with the nurturing role and elements of my mother. I am also going to resemble the plates so that there are less gaps in the portrait so that it will read better. Gaps might seem as a symbol of disconnect and therefore could be read as some sort of abandonment from my mother, which is not how I feel and I do not want that to be felt.

A thing I need to work on: I'm having a difficult time with the background. I need something in the blank space. I want it to be related to my mother and her role in my life yet I don't want it to distract from the portrait itself. Ideas: Yellow wash Food Bare plates ....I need to come up with me

Scale Blog
My senior project is going to be big. There’s a few reasons I am choosing to make it this size. First I usually work larger. It is what I am comfortable with. When it is blown up I think its easier to put in the small details of a portrait . Personally I have always appreciated larger work and for some reason attribute it to being a more difficult work. Another reason I have made it large is the use of my materials. I am making a collage out of plates, books, and mirrors. A small collection would not express the importance of the materials as well as a larger collection. Lastly I want the large piecing together of materials to add to the uniqueness of the image. I want their to be in emphasis on the gaps of the plates and an overlapping of the books and mirrors, and if I did not have a many of these then nobody would notice this element.

Elaine Quave Gallery Talk
Elaine created a unique series of work. Her exhibit, Anthro-Botanical, is a group of sculptural elements that harmoniously combine nature and man. Since she incorporated sculpted ceramic bones, her work used minimal color which appropriately emphasized the natural plant-like structures.  During her talk she spoke at length of the process of developing her concept. One interesting point in her talk that stuck with me is she did not talk about coming up with an idea for a project but instead let her interests in nature from readings guide her to create an image. This reminded me of the saying from my teacher abroad, kris,”Your life is your art”. To me this is an important aspect to keep in mind as an artist that will create many future works.

Progress Report 2
Tuesday September 19th was a sour day. I doubted my ability to produce a challenging work. I thought there was too many obstacles to work around. I wanted to abandon the material I have been working with and begin something new with the same underlining idea. Although with the encouragement of my professors I accepted the challenge and continued.
Thursday September 21st was a productive day. I accomplished more in this day than any of the prior days combined. I finished drilling holes in all of the plates, cut my wood, painted my wood, drilled holes in the wood, and installed the plates. After becoming a regular at Lowes, my canvas was built. And I am proud of it.
Check out the picture of it!

Progress Report 1
I am at a standstill in my project. It is not concerning considering it is so early on, but I feel as if typing out some ideas would be helpful. So...for my senior art project I am doing three portraits. Each painting is of a face that I connect to one part of the fundamental aspects of life. I consider these aspects to include future/family, education, and health. In my eyes I feel as if each member of my family provides me with one of these elements in life. I have came up with ideas for the portrait of my mother, symbolizing nurture/family, and my sister, symbolizing education. My moms symbol is plates and her portrait will be on a collage of plates...I have a sketch in my studio space. My sisters symbol is books and I have two ideas for her, which you can see in my studio. Either I can stack the books on the ground and paint on the ends of them or I could have them opened and paint on the pages (Maybe I can have the pages flipped to significant page numbers).  Now am trying to decide what my fathers portrait, of health, should use as a symbol. Since I am using each symbol as the canvas of my paintings, so it is important that I come up with the backdrop before I begin his painting.
Ideas on health:
apple
medicine
athletic clothing (shoes, shirts...)
weights
self love.....maybe mirrors collaged together....I kind of like this...and it could fit with my collage idea

Liz Rundorff Smith Gallery Talk
Liz Rundorff Smith. I was unable to attend Smith’s reception discussing her “Found Paintings” exhibit. Her work featured colorful abstract oil paintings on panel. These paintings were esthetically pleasing. She incorporated color schemes of complementary colors, and used geometric shapes, which resulted in harmonious pieces. Personally I did not find her work revolutionarily new. I may feel this way because the pieces were simplistic. Even though her work is not outstandingly different, I still appreciate the work she has put together. While reading Smiths artist statement I immediately felt her work did not mirror her statement. She speaks of loss, abandonment, and instability. Green shapes and a red block is not a symbol I instantly associate with these feelings. Many of her lines were crisp clean marks, which remind me more of stability. I do think her work ties to the second part of her statement where she says “I find a compelling duality between presence and absence”. This quote does come to life in her paintings. She uses a technique to subtly remove paint from her paintings so that some of the shapes are created by an absence of color. Possibly this could allude to the loss she feels. I wish I could have heard her speak on her works and then maybe I would have more clarity understanding her pieces.
