What It Is Really Like to Teach English Abroad
Teaching English abroad is something many college students — us included — dream of doing after graduation. It’s a chance to live in another country, gain work experience, and travel — all at the same time.
Alexa Woods, a George Washington University grad with a B.A. in International Affairs, took the leap and spent a year teaching English abroad in Malaga, Spain.
We chatted with Alexa about her…

tefl certification
if you are looking for an adventure, a “Teaching English as a Foreign Language” (TEFL) certification is rather easy to get. That paired with a college degree and the willingness to live somewhere new could set up quite the adventure!

COOL YOUR HEELS
Origin: This expression dates back to the 16th century when it was used to refer to horses. After they had run a long race, their feet would be hot. They would stand in a stream to cool off their feet. By the next century it was already used when talking about people who were in a hurry but had to wait for something. When you’re impatient you get “hot,” so someone may force you to wait while you cool down. In other words if you’re “hot to trot” you might need to cool your heels first. Other related expressions are “kick your heels” (British English) “cool off/down” “chill” “take a chill pill” “cool  it”. But these later are more in the sense of telling someone to relax, and not necessarily having to wait.
Usage:  Informal, spoken and written, general American and British English
Idiomatic Meaning:  To be kept waiting impatiently for a long time
Literal Meaning: To take the rear part of your feet, your heels, and cool them off because they may be excessively hot.
Why is this funny? In the photo we see two the legs of two women wearing very high heeled boots. One connotation of hot is “sexy” and high heels are considered sexy too. So these hot heels might need to be cooled.  Also notice, that they are in a jail cell, sometimes referred to as “the cooler” because people are put in there and made to wait for a very long time, often years where they are forced to cool their heels and all other body parts as well. So the two ladies are cooling their heels while they are “cooling their heels.”
Sample sentence: The patient demanded to see the doctor right away, but the nurse made him “cool his heels” in the waiting room.

PUNKTUATION
THOSE WHO MESS WITH THE QUEEN’S ENGLISH ARE JUST A BUNCH OF COMMA-NISTS FROM THE COLON-IES
What’s so funny about this? I could easily do a whole monolog about the photo that accompanies this audioboo.  But that wouldn’t be fair to the actual joke. So I’ll let you all deal with the photo yourselves. Besides the words in the photo are there mostly to point out the power of punctuation. Now THAT’s a good alliteration! First of all you need to be clear about what the “Queen’s English” means. It’s an expression that refers to proper or correct English.  The assumption is that no one could possibly speak better English than the queen of England, except maybe, the King. In truth, there is another expression about the “King’s English” which means the exact same thing.  I guess it just depends on whether the current ruling monarch of England is a man or a woman. But what does it mean to “mess” with the Queen’s English? It’s kind of what I do in these audioboos. To “mess with” something means to distort or change it. Wordplay and puns could definitely be labeled as messing with the language, but in a good way. However the joke makes two puns labeling the language messers as comma-nists from the colon-ies. The “colonies” belong to the former British Empire which included many countries that England ruled. When a country sends people to live in and colonize a newly conquered country, this country is referred to as a colony. As you may know, the United States began its existence as 13 colonies of England.  But the first part of the word “colonies” is colon, as in the punctuation mark, or the bottom of the lower intestines. Comma-nist is a pun on the word communist, that is, a believer in the economic philosophy known as Communism. As a somewhat discredited philosophy, it can be an insult to call someone a communist. Of course the word “comma-nist” includes the other punctuation mark, a comma. In general, the language spoken in the colonies was considered inferior to the Queen’s English.  That’s why these comma-nists from the colon-ies are accused of messing around. And THAT’s what’s so funny!

Lesson #02 - The Alphabet Game
Level - Suitable for most levels Time - 60 minutes Skills - Vocabulary, spelling and sentence formation Materials - N/A
This is a pretty cool lesson that is suitable for students of most levels.
By no means an original idea, this is just something I figured that would be cool to do when I was told I had to teach a lesson on Numbers and Letters (which most people know, it’s usually the first thing they learn). So first off, write the letters of the alphabet on the board. The idea is that students have to give a word that begins with each letter and use it in a correct sentence.
Depending on the level of the students you could ask them for more than one word, or ask them to think of longer, more complicated words to push themselves. If you have more students you could make it into a competition and give them points for word use etc. However you roll with it, this is pretty good for anyone from beginner level to upper intermediate.
