something i love about ghibli movies as children’s movies is that they’re complex and don’t try to baby their target audience. something i hate about a lot of kids content is that it’s super patronizing and assumes that kids just,,, aren’t smart while in my experience working with kids they feel things in a raw way that just doesn’t exist in the same way when you get older and used to feeling things. and kids are the MOST curious people in the whole world. like when i work with kids a lot of people try to dodge their questions and write them off as just funny interactions but i know when i was a kid i genuinely really wanted to just UNDERSTAND the world around me better. ghibli movies hit hard now that i’m adult partly because they have a certain level of maturity that a lot of other children’s content doesn’t. 

kiki’s delivery service is a great example of a movie that has some really exciting and beautiful moments and is also about a very complex coming of age. it’s about the feeling of never being good enough and burnout and depression and it addresses how to make life exiting even when it’s not that easy. these are themes that kids think about a lot even if they wouldn’t quite be able to articulate. as an adult in uni living in my own apartment, these are also themes that apply to my life just as much as they might have when i was younger.
