Getafegate: Barça’s halloween horrorshow and As
http://ift.tt/1L10MjU
Barça’s halloween party after the victory at Getafe was not a clever idea. It may have seemed like harmless fun at the time but the prank soon went wrong when the players involved interrupted the press conference of a Getafe player. It was a clear lack of respect to Getafe but it didn’t seem to be a big deal and the matter seemed to be closed after Barça’s captain Andrés Iniesta apologised to Getafe the following day.
Then on Monday the Madrid-based sportspaper As produced photos of Barça’s dressing room at Getafe which showed a toilet and washbasin splattered with fake blood. Could this be true? Could the Barça players really be such spoilt brats that they would vandalise another’s property is such a way? We have no way of knowing for sure but after Barça’s 3-0 win over BATE Borisov Dani Alves denied the accusation saying that Barça had nothing to do with the vandalism except for making the mistake of leaving the bottle of fake blood behind.
So now we have the counter accusation which leaves the question of whether journalists would stoop so low as to do the dirty deed themselves. Unfortunately the Madrid press has a poor track record when it comes to Barça and their anti-Barça policy is pretty obvious. In the past we have seen manipulated photos to suggest onside players were offside and it really wouldn’t surprise me if this was another attempt to throw some shit at us.
It seems impossible to believe the press these days about anything. Whether it is the news of another plane tragedy or just a simple penalty decision in football, the press take sides according to their loyalties, cherry-picking on the information they report to manipulate the truth.
We can’t know for sure what really happened but if Barça players were behind the vandalism then they should be truly ashamed of themselves. I have my doubts about that but what is clear is that in the future the players need to think a bit more before they decide to throw a spontaneous fiesta in somebody else’s house.

Luis Suárez Superstar
http://ift.tt/1Rxb00w
This time last season Luis Suárez played his first game for Barça in a 3-1 defeat at the Bernábeu. The Uruguayan had just completed a four-month ban for chomping on Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder in the World Cup and there was immense expectation to see the €81 million signing teaming up with Leo Messi and Neymar Jr in Barça’s attack. The pressure was on Suárez to prove he was worth the money and with Leo Messi playing his false nine role he was initially asked to play on the right-side of the attack.
Suárez’s talent was immediately evident but he failed to find the net until his first goal against Apoel in the Champions League on November 26, and he didn’t score in La Liga until his eighth game, a 5-0 win over Cordoba on December 20. The goals began to flow after Christmas when he was moved to centre-forward with Messi moving to the right. The formula worked perfectly and Barça clinched a magnificent treble of Liga, Copa and Champions League with an incredible 122 goals coming from the three star forwards.
Suárez’s role in that success was vital. He scored 25 goals in the 2014/15 season including the winner in the Camp Nou Clásico, two incredibly important braces at Man City and at Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League knock-out stage, and the icing on the cake came with his crucial strike against Juventus in the Champions League Final in Berlin.
Ten more goals have been added this season taking his total to an impressive 35 goals in his first year. Barça have suffered with injuries and all sorts of off-the-field problems but Suárez has been admirable in his sacrifice for the team. The last few days have been particularly difficult for the club with the fine from Uefa, the allegations of a linesman being pressured into favouring Madrid and the sad news of Johan Cruyff’s lung cancer. Yesterday’s game against Eibar could have caused us more pain when the visitors took an early lead. It was a poor team performance from Barça but Suárez converted his three chances into a splendid hat-trick to keep Barça level with Madrid at the top of La Liga.
The form of both Suárez and Neymar has been excellent in Messi’s absence and has led some to ask whether Messi will finish this season as the club’s top scorer. I wouldn’t bet against the Argentinian but just the fact that the question is being posed is a demonstration of the Uruguayan and the Brazilian’s contribution. I’ll leave the question open to you and add another one: Suárez or Eto’o? Who has been Barça’s best out-and-out striker of the 21st century?

UEFA’s justice
http://ift.tt/1OG2ZZB
When I moved to Barcelona in 1989 one of the first things that struck me about Barça’s followers was an apparent paranoia towards football’s authorities. Leagues had been lost due to biased refereeing and the powers that be were constantly conspiring against the Catalan club in favour of their darlings Real Madrid.
As an outsider I saw this as the typical feeling of many football fans who find it impossible to be objective about refereeing decisions. It seemed reasonable to believe that under Franco’s dictatorship there might have been favoritism but surely since the restoration of democracy things were now fair and above board.
Over the years Real Madrid seem to benefit practically every season from more penalty decisions in their favour. However, perhaps because I believe that if you lose you should look at your own mistakes rather than blaming bad luck or external forces, I have always preferred to ignore the conspiracy theories.
Unfortunately, some things are impossible to explain without the involvement of some behind-the-scenes power, and UEFA’s decision yesterday to fine Barça €40,000 falls into this category. Barça have been fined due to UEFA’s rules which prohibit political symbols and the booing of anthems after fans raised the Catalan Independence flag, La Estelada, at the recent Champions League game with Bayer Leverkusen.
The rules may be in place to stop racial abuse and incitement to violence but this is clearly not the case here. Just as there was no violence at the Champions League Final when Barça were fined for the same reason, the game with Leverkusen was completely peaceful. The fact that Atlético Madrid were fined only €11,000 and Benfica only €20,000 for the violent incidents and flare throwing at their recent game demonstrates either an appalling incompetence in UEFA’s fight against violence in the game or something more sinister which some friends insist is an anti-Barça campaign.
The harshness of the FIFA transfer ban is more evidence that they are out to get us. The problem with this paranoia is we end up sensing underhand behaviour in everything. It’s not just every penalty that we are denied or Madrid are awarded, it is the tax cases against Barça players and the accusations of irregularities in the Neymar transfer deal.
Barça may not be as squeaky clean as we would like to believe but UEFA are clearly mistaken in this latest case. The lower fines for Atlético and Benfica, where it’s not too much to say that somebody could have been killed, clearly show the authorities care less about our safety when we go to football matches than they care about controlling our freedom of expression and defending their own image.

Changes at Barçacentral
http://ift.tt/1LxmhxN
Apologies if you are looking for a match preview for tomorrow’s game with Rayo Vallecano but I have decided to stop doing previews and reports for a while with the idea of writing a general round-up or an opinion piece sometime during the week.
The main reason is to give myself time for other things. Doing a preview the day before the game takes me about three hours and researching the opposition can be a drag, especially on days that my computer is running slowly. I enjoy doing the reports but with the late kick-off times in Spain it often means I am still working when I should be in bed. Added to this I probably don’t get to follow the game as completely as I’d like due to my constant scribbling of notes. I also miss watching the TV after-match analysis of the game or I miss another game that I could be enjoying.
My intention is to write opinion pieces with the aim of creating more debate. I’m sure we all miss the early days of fcbnews when the best thing on the blog was the comments section. I understand that the previews and reports don’t create much discussion and that just to say you think Barça will win 3-0 or that Rakitic deserves a 7 and not a 6 is not the most stimulating debate. I’ve always tried to be objective in my match reports and perhaps that has steered me away from controversy, I hope now to take on different issues concerning Barça and football in general to inspire more discussion. This will mean fewer posts overall but the pieces won’t be as rushed as the previews and reports usually are so I hope to improve in quality.

Barça frustrated by Sevilla and woodwork
http://ift.tt/1OP22Ox
Unai Emery’s Sevilla pulled off a 2-1 victory over Barça this afternoon in a highly entertaining game at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. Michael Krohn-Dehli and Vicente Iborra hit Barça with a double blow early in the second half before Neymar reduced the difference fifteen minutes from the end with a dubious penalty. Sevilla held on for the three points but Barça will curse their luck during the game as Neymar, Luis Suárez and Sandro were all denied by the woodwork.
Luis Enrique restored Claudio Bravo in the Barça goal and the Chilean generally gave a safer looking performance than those offered by Ter Stegen in recent weeks. Bravo goal was soon under threat as Sevilla began strongly with Iborra sending a dipping volley over the bar after just 70 seconds. Dani Alves was the other noticeable name left off the Barça teamsheet as Sergi Roberto was again prefered at right-back. The youngster was seen less going forward than in other games besides an early run where he just failed to connect with Suárez’s return pass.
Javier Mascherano played the holding role in midfield alongside Rakitic and Busquets while Munir was chosen to accompany Suárez and Neymar in attack. Neymar had a decent effort early on pushed away by Sevilla keeper Sergio Rico. Then, in the ninth minute, Rakitic crossed for Neymar who nodded the ball down but Munir hooked his shot over. Jeremy Mathieu got the role of partnering Piqué in defence but both struggled against Kevin Gameiro who managed his first effort on goal with a far post header in the 11th minute which Bravo showed good reflexes to dive to his left and parry.
The game was open with both teams stretched by the pace, and there was little seen of Barça’s paused possession game. There were chances at both ends but Suárez had his shot blocked while Mathieu made a last ditch intervention to thwart Iborra. Bravo needed to be quick off his line to force Gameiro wide before blocking the striker’s attempt to cross. Then in the 22nd minute Munir forced the ball through to Suárez who found the net from an offside position, only for the play to be called back by referee Gil Manzano for a foul on Munir. Neymar curled the free-kick round the wall and the ball incredibly hit the post before bouncing off the diving Rico, hitting the post again and then rolling agonisingly along the goal line. Piqué and Coke raced in but neither could reach the ball which rolled past the other post and Suárez failed to squeeze it back in.
Sevilla responded with Krychowial glancing a header wide from Krohn-Dehli’s free-kick and Bravo needed to be well positioned to stop Tremoulinas’s 20-yard drive. Neymar was leading most of Barça’s attacks but it was Suárez who was next to hit the woodwork, curling a Nolito-like effort from the left that just failed to dip into the far top corner. Then, just before half-time, Rakitic scooped a splendid pass through for Suárez but Kolooziejczak was alert to dart across and clear.
It was a surprise to arrive goalless to half-time and the frenetic rhythm continued after the break with Gameiro forcing a splendid save from Bravo after just 11 seconds though from an offside position. Barça went straight up the other end and Neymar seemed to have a chance but he overelaborated, allowing white shirts the chance to get goalside and block. Piqué had a header saved then Krohn-Dehli shot weakly wide at the other end.
A goal might have come at either end but Sevila finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. Jordi Alba missed a challenge near the half-way line allowing a Sevilla attack with Gameiro down the right. Alba couldn’t catch Gameiro and Mathieu came across but failed to block the striker’s progress. Gameiro crossed low, Sergi Roberto couldn’t cut it out, and Krohn-Dehli arrived at the far post to give Bravo no chance.
Two minutes later Piqué needed to make a smart block to deny Gameiro as Barça struggled to react to the goal. Then, in the 58th minute, Krohn-Dehli crossed from the left, and Mathieu was slow to move out, leaving Iborra and Gameiro onside and Iborra grazed a header inside the post. Two-nil down with half an hour to go and Luis Enrique called for Alves and Sandro to replace Mathieu and Munir with Sergi Roberto moving into midfield and Mascherano into central defence.
Neymar led the charge to try and get Barça back in the game, forcing three good saves from Rico in quick succession. Gil Manzano ignored Suárez’s appeal for a penalty after Kolooziejczak tugged on his shoulder but in the 73rd minute the referee blew an extremely dubious penalty after Sandro shot the ball against Tremoulinas’s arm. Rico guessed the direction of Neymar’s penalty but the Brazilian’s low shot had enough power to find the net and put Barça back in with a chance.
Sevilla were now forced back and Sandro looked like scoring from Suárez cross in the 79th minute but Tremoulinos did enough to force the striker into shooting against the post. There were more shots, from Sandro, Sergi Roberto, Suárez and Rakitic but Sevilla’s defence was densely populated now and the efforts failed to find their way through. Neymar’s final effort, a disappointing drive well over the bar was Barça’s 23rd shot of the game. If you can only score from a penalty then you probably don’t deserve much more though the damn posts also played their part in Barça’s defeat.

Dilemmas for Luis Enrique at Sevilla
http://ift.tt/1JJtXr7
Luis Enrique has just sixteen first team players available for tomorrow afternoon’s game at Sevilla (Saturday 4 pm) as Barça look to regain top spot in La Liga before the internation break. Villarreal, who lead the table on 16 points after seven games, play at Levante on Sunday and Barça will also be hoping to take advantage of Atlético Madrid playing Real Madrid this weekend.
There are some important decisions to be make regarding team selection. The most difficult will be deciding whether to continue with Ter Stegen in goal or to restore the fit-again Claudio Bravo. Most fans would probably agree that Bravo offers more security though Luis Enrique may prefer to wait until after the international break before bringing him back. The Barça coach will also need to find a formula to cover for the absentees, especially those in midfield and attack. Should he play Munir or Sandro to accompany Suárez and Neymar up front or should he look for another alternative? Should Mascherano be moved into midfield. And where best to play Sergi Roberto to get the most from the youngster’s excellent moment of form?
There is also the possibility of a change of formation. Lucho could decide on a 4-4-2 with Mathieu or Bartra partnering Piqué in central defence, and a midfield of Sergi Roberto, Rakitic, Busquets and Mascherano. However, it seems more likely that we will continue with the 4-3-3 which could be formed by Ter Stegen in goal, a defence of Alves, Piqué, Mascherano and Alba, a midfield three of Sergi Roberto, Busquets and Rakitic with Munir, Suárez and Neymar up front.
If Barça have problems, it is just as bad, if not worse, for Unai Emery’s Sevilla who will be without Beto, Pareja, Rami, Escudero, Carriço, Banega and Kakuta for tomorrow’s game. Like Barça, Sevilla have suffered the consequences of a limited preseason due to important games in August which could very well be the cause of the numerous muscular injuries accumulated by both teams. Sevilla have started the league season with just five points from six games and they only gained their first victory in last Saturday’s 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano. They lost 2-0 to Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday, giving them little time to prepare for tomorrow’s afternoon kick-off. The only good news for Emery is that Fernando Llorente and Vitolo have recovered from their injuries and will be available again against Barça.
The two teams last met in Barça’s 5-4 extra-time win in the European Supercup Final in August, and as last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a 2-2 draw it is pretty safe to expect goals tomorrow. Sevilla haven’t beaten Barça at the Sanchez Pizjuan since the 2006/07 season and Emery continues with his record of never having beaten Barça despite giving us plenty of problems with his teams over the years. Tomorrow could be different but I’m expecting Sevilla to be more affected by their absentees and for Barça to take all three points in a high-scoring game.
Possible teams:
Sevilla: Rico; Coke, Kolooziejczak, Andreolli, Tremoulinas; Krychowiak, N’Zonzi; Reyes, Iborra, Vitolo; Gameiro.
Barça: Ter Stegen; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Sergi Roberto, Busquets, Rakitic; Munir, Suárez, Neymar.
Prediction: Sevilla 2 Barça 3
Date: Saturday 3 October 2015. Kick-off 4.00 pm local time.

Barça stun Leverkusen with late comeback
http://ift.tt/1FBTCHu
Poor Bayer Leverkesen. The German side led Barça for close to an hour in tonight’s Champions League clash at Camp Nou after Papadopolous’s 22nd minute header, and for long periods they looked the better side. With just ten minutes remaining, substitute Sergi Roberto grabbed Barça’s equalizer, and just two minutes later Luis Suárez smashed home the winner which, with Roma losing to BATE Borisov, leaves Barça top of Group E on four points after two games. The night had a negative side for Luis Enrique’s side as Andrés Iniesta limped off with a hamstring injury which could see him out for three weeks, adding to the growing list of injuries this season.
Sandro was chosen to replace Leo Messi on the right of Barça’s attack and Jeremy Mathieu was preferred over Jordi Alba at left-back, but besides that Barça had nine of the starters from the Champions League Final which meant no place for the in-form Sergi Roberto. Bayer played a 4-4-2 in an energetic high press which immediately gave Barça problems to play the ball out from defence and after just 70 seconds Ter Stegen needed to make a save from Chicharito Hernández’s near post shot.
Rakitic had an early header from Neymar’s cross but the ball went comfortably close to Leno to save. Then in the tenth minute Sandro linked up well with Luis Suárez but Leno made a fine stop to deny the young striker. However, it was soon evident that Bayer were not going to sit back. Bellarabi hooked over after good work from Calhanoglu and Chicharito. Kampl shot wide at the far post from Kramer’s cross, and Piqué needed to make a last-ditch block to stop Bellarabi’s shot.
Bayer’s dominance was converted into a goal when Papadopoulos scored from Calhonoglu’s inswinging corner in the 22nd minute. Neither Suárez nor Mathieu reacted at the near post and Ter Stegen didn’t arrive in time, allowing Bayer’s central defender to head in unchallenged from two yards.
Barça really struggled to react after the goal and Bayer might have made it 0-2 in the 33rd minute when Bellarabi cut inside Piqué to shoot with force from eight yards but Ter Stegen showed excellent reflexes to beat the ball away. The closest Barça came to a first-half equalizer was in the 39th minute when Rakitic and Luis Suárez combined to find Neymar. The Brazilian rolled his shot across the goal and against the far post, Sandro, following up, looked sure to score but Papadopolous slid back to block the shot a yard from the line.
Barça improved after half-time but not until Chicharito had blasted over from Bellarabi’s pass in the 50th minute. Busquets played deeper between the centre-backs to assist with bringing the ball out, the full-backs pushed forward while Neymar and Sandro moved further infield to get closer to goal. The pressure increased on the German defence and in the 52nd minute Rakitic took advantage of a hurried Bayer clearance to send a quick pass in to Sandro on the right but the youngster missed his third chance of the night, pulling his shot past the far post.
Iniesta tried to take up the gauntlet, dribbling into the area before backheeling to Rakitic whose shot hit Wendell in the face before flying across to Neymar who was also guilty of pulling his shot past the post. Then, two minutes later, Iniesta pulled up in mid-stride and Barça were forced into a substitution with Alba coming on at left-back, Mathieu moved to central defence and Mascherano took Iniesta’s place in midfield.
At this point things were not looking good for Barça. Luis Enriqué then decided to make his second substitution which would prove to be vital in the end, with Munir replacing Sandro. There was no noticeable improvement at first though Barça were playing more in Bayer’s half than in the first 45 minutes. Neymar fired a free-kick narrowly wide, and Piqué sent a header straight at Leno after Rakitic’s overhead kick from a corner.
In the 72nd minute Luis Enriqué played his final card, bringing on Sergi Roberto in place of Rakitic. The German’s had abandoned their pressing game by this time and Barça pushed further and further forward. Alves’s cross was flicked on by Sergi Roberto’s header and came to Neymar at the far post but the Brazilian failed to get a shot at goal as the defence bore down on him.
Bayer were clinging on now and with just ten minutes to go their defence finally cracked. Sergi Roberto was involved in the build-up, opening the play to Alba on the left. Alba drilled in a low cross, Munir forced a low shot that Leno couldn’t hold and Sergi Roberto darted in to stab home the rebound.
It was hard on Bayer but Barça’s late push probably deserved an equalizer. However, Barça hadn’t finished and just two minutes later Munir twisted and turned to force his way past three defenders on the right before touching the ball inside to Suárez who whipped a shot high inside the near post from 15 yards. Bayer were crushed by the double blow and there was no coming back for the Germans. A great build-up involving Suárez and Neymar gave Munir the chance to make it 3-1 near the end, but the youngster scooped his shot over Leno and wide of the far post.
There is plenty to criticise about the first-half performance when Bayer looked physically fitter. Their pressing game gave us a lot of problems and the players looked lost at times for an answer. The adjustments in the second half helped, but the comeback was down to the substitutions which added energy to Barça’s game when Bayer were beginning to tire. Credit should go to Luis Enrique, who despite the injury problems keeps grinding out victories, and to the players who showed the courage to fight back when some in the Camp Nou crowd had starting whistling from the 55th minute. The Germans posed a difficult problen for Barça tonight and the coach and players found the solution in the end.
Barça: Ter Stegen 5.5; Alves 5.5, Piqué 6, Mascherano 6, Mathieu 5.5; Rakitic 5.5 (Sergi Roberto m72, 7.5), Busquets 5.5, Iniesta 6 (Alba m60, 6); Sandro 5.5 (Munir m63, 7), Suárez 7, Neymar 6.
Leverkusen: Leno; Donati (Hilbert m76), Tah, Papadopoulos, Wendell; Kramer, Kampl, Bender, Bellarabi (Brandt m66); Çalhanoglu, Chicharito (Kiessling m55).
Goals: m22 Papadopoulos 0-1, m80 Sergi Roberto 1-1, m82 Suárez 2-1.
Yellow cards: m30 Mascherano, m37 Neymar, m40 Bender, m63 Calhanoglu, m68 Papadopoulos, m75 Alba, m89 Kampl.

Champions League Preview: Barça vs Bayer Leverkusen
http://ift.tt/1P1f4Yn
The last time Bayer Leverkusen visited Camp Nou, in March 2012, they received a 7-1 thrashing from Pep Guardiola’s Barça. Leo Messi played an absolute blinder that night, scoring five in one of the most dazzling displays ever seen in the Champions League. Messi will miss the reencounter between the two sides in tomorrow night’s Group E match (Tuesday 8.45 pm) as he begins a seven-to-eight week absence with his ligament injury.
There is no player in the world who could contribute as much as Messi does for Barça, but the Argentinian’s injury arrives when Barça have recently lost Pedro to Chelsea and Rafinha to injury, leaving just Munir and Sandro as the only natural forwards available to take Messi’s place. Neither of the youngsters can be called a top class striker without inserting the word “potentially” though they now have a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate their worth.
The Catalan press have been running polls asking fans whether Luis Enrique should choose Munir or Sandro or another, such as Iniesta, to accompany Neymar and Luis Suárez in attack. It seems likely that the Barça coach will use various options during Messi’s absence, including the possibility of changing formation to 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1. Lucho has plenty of players available but there is an imbalance which means players normally used in the back four will need to cover for the lack of attacking midfielders and forwards.
For tomorrow’s game I think Munir should be given another chance. It would be good for his confidence after playing a role in both Barça’s goals against Las Palmas, and it would also allow an orthodox line-up elsewhere. Another strong option would be to play both Alves and Sergi Roberto with one of them playing further forward on the right wing.
There was good news this morning when Claudio Bravo and Jordi Alba both trained with the group and they could both be in contention to play tomorrow though Bravo seems more likely to start on the bench. Adriano, however, missed the session while Gerard Gumbau continues with the first team. Considering this is a Champions League match we can expect Luis Enrique to play his strongest possible team though how he adapts to Messi’s absence remains to be seen. It will certainly make predicting the team more interesting.
Leverkusen arrive as Group E leaders after beating BATE Borisov 4-1 while Barça drew at Roma. Coach Roger Schmidt is without Charles Aranguiz, Omer Toprak and Tin Jedvaj for tomorrow’s game while right-back Roberto Hilbert is a doubt. The German side arrive in good form after winning 0-3 at Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Possible teams:
Barça: Ter Stegen; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta; Munir, Suárez, Neymar.
Bayer Leverkusen: Leno; Donati, Tah, Papadopoulos, Wendell; Mehmedi, Bender, Kramer, Calhanoglu; Chicharito Hernandez, Bellarabi.
Prediction: Barça 2 Leverkusen 0

Suárez double sinks Las Palmas but Barça lose Messi for two months
http://ift.tt/1iT5SJr
Luis Suárez scored twice as Barça returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Las Palmas this afternoon. However, the win was soured by a knee injury to Leo Messi that could see the Argentinian sidelined for two months. Messi was injured in the third minute when Las Palmas defender Pedro Bigas blocked his shot and the first reports suggest he has torn his interior cruciate ligament and will need 7-8 weeks to recover.
The early injury to Messi left Barça looking unbalanced. Munir came on in his place while with both Mascherano and Busquets in midfield there was a lack of thrust from behind the forwards.. Neymar was causing problems but the connection between the front three was missing.
Las Palmas defended deep in a 5-3-2 formation which left few spaces for Barça to exploit and the visitors managed the first shot on goal in the 21st minute though Ter Stegen was well placed to stop Araujo’s low angled shot comfortably. Barça needed somebody to raise their game and it was Sergi Roberto, playing again at right-back, who provided that little bit extra to make the difference. In the 25th minute he started the move for Suárez’s opening goal, finding Rakitic who chipped the ball forward to Munir, before dashing forward to receive Munir’s back-heel and crossing from near the corner flag for Suárez, leaping high above Alcaraz, to finish with a stylish header past Varas from eight yards.
Barça might have added a second soon after, but Neymar volleyed wide from Suárez’s left-wing cross. However, with the game seemingly under control, Barça allowed the visitors a five minute spell before half-time in which Viera caused Ter Stegen a worry with a swerving 30-yarder and the dangerous Roque Mesa led a couple of breakaways that were both poorly finished by Viera. Barça finished the half with Rakitic shooting wide from 20-yards after a good build-up involving Neymar and Suárez.
The one-goal advantage did look too comfortable and when the teams came out for the second half there was the feeling that Barça still had a lot to do to assure the three points. Munir had not had a good first half despite his role in the goal, but in the 54th minute he latched on to Neymar’s pass and sent in a low cross that Busquets allowed to run to Suárez at the far post, and the Uruguayan swept the ball high past Varas for his second of the game.
Barça improved after the second goal, taking advantage of the space left as Las Palmas now pushed forward. Rakitic gave Neymar the chance to show his speed before forcing a good low save from Varas. Then, the Brazilian missed a golden opportunity for Barça’s third when he fired a penalty over the bar after Suarez won a handball off Alcaraz.
Rakitic and Sergi Roberto combined brilliantly to give Suárez the chance for his hat-trick in the 75th minute, but Varas managed to get in the way to parry. Viera fired a free-kick over at the other end but there seemed little threat of any comeback at this point. Mascherano then came very close to his first ever Barça goal with a terrific 30-yard bullet but Varas dived to his right to make a fine save.
Sandro replaced Munir for the final ten minutes and he soon tested Varas after cutting in from the right. Then, with just three minutes left on the clock El Zhar robbed Mascherano before finding Viera who left Ter Stegen without a much-needed clean sheet with the help of a deflection off Piqué. Sandro then missed a great chance, shooting wide of the near post after a wonderful run from Neymar. Las Palmas’s final effort was a hopeful shot well wide from Viera but there were a nervous couple of minutes as Barça held on for the three points.

Barça look to bounce back against Las Palmas
http://ift.tt/1LROhs0
Barça face newly-promoted Las Palmas at Camp Nou tomorrow afternoon (Saturday 4 pm) with the need to recover after the shock 4-1 defeat at Celta. Individual defensive errors and a lack of intensity have been blamed as the pricipal causes for the disaster in Vigo which has seen Barça drop to fifth in the table, a point behind leaders Real Madrid, Celta and Villarreal.
Jordi Alba and Sandro both trained today and should both be available to play though Luis Enrique is still without the injured Claudio Bravo, Douglas, Thomas Vermaelen and Rafinha. Despite the absenses, the Barça coach seems likely to make more rotations in order to reserve some fresh legs for the coming Champions League game with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. Rakitic will return in midfield while Adriano and Marc Bartra could both get another start in defence. The most difficult decision is whether to rest any of the front three though it would seem most sensible to start with Messi, Suárez and Neymar and use substitutions to give them a break in games when Barça are winning comfortably.
Las Palmas return to the Primera División this season after an absense of thirteen years. On their last league visit to Camp Nou in March 2002 they produced an upset against Charly Rexach’s team by taking a 1-1 draw that more or less ended any Barça hopes of winning La Liga that year. Luis Enrique was in the Barça line-up that day and he opened the scoring after 19 minutes only for Orlando to equalize for Las Palmas early in the second half.
This season under coach Paco Herrera, the main ambition of Las Palmas will be to survive relegation and they have got off to a pretty good start, taking five points from five games. They have proved to be a difficult opponent in their two away games so far, losing narrowly at Atlético Madrid (1-0) and drawing 3-3 at Celta. Their first league victory came on Wednesday night when they earned a 2-0 win over Unai Emery’s Sevilla. There are two familiar faces in the Las Palmas squad: ex-Sevilla keeper Javi Varas who stopped a last-minute Messi penalty to earn a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou in October 2011, and ex-Barça B Argentinian striker Sergio Araujo who was Las Palmas’s top scorer in last season’s promotion campaign with 25 goals.
Possible teams:
Barça: Ter Stegen; Adriano, Bartra, Piqué, Alba; Rakitic, Mascherano, Sergi Roberto; Messi, Suárez, Neymar.
Las Palmas: Varas; Simon, Alvcaraz, Artiles, Bigas, Castellano; Roque, Hernán, Wakaso; Viera, Araujo.
Prediction: Barça 3 Las Palmas 1

Barça brought down to earth in Vigo
http://ift.tt/1QyZVvv
Barça came unstuck tonight in Vigo, ripped apart by a splendid Celta side that demonstrated a greater desire for the victory. Barça transfer target Nolito curled in a brilliant goal in the 26th minute to put the Galician side in front before Iago Aspas doubled the lead four minutes later after a mistake by Gerard Piqué. Aspas grabbed his second of the night ten minutes after half-time to put Celta three up. Neymar Jr pulled back a consolation goal but Celta substitute John Guidetti completed Barça’s misery by making it 4-1 before the end.
This morning Jordi Alba pulled out of the squad which meant Jeremy Mathieu was employed at left back while Piqué returned at centre-back and Sergi Roberto was prefered over Ivan Rakitic in midfield. The rest of the team was as expected but right from the start it was clear that it was going to be a difficult night as Celta poured on the pressure in the first ten minutes.
Barça survived the early wave of pressure and Iniesta and Messi began to look for holes in Celta’s rearguard. Messi and Neymar both had shots saved by Celta keeper Sergio Alvarez and the Argentinian had another good effort blocked. The game might have turned out very differently had Barça taken one of these early chances, but as things were Celta took advantage to strike first. Mallo advanced up the right and sent a long cross that arrived to Nolito on the far side of the penalty area. The angle wouldn’t have been good for most players but Nolito is a master from this position. He curled his shot over Ter Stegen’s leap, the ball dropping in off the far post after grazing the keeper’s fingertips.
Barça hardly had time to react to the blow when Celta struck again. Piqué got caught in possession near the centre-spot, Nolito headed the ball through for Aspas to chase and the Celta centre-forward finished with a classy Messi-style scoop over Ter Stegen. Barça were groggy and a couple of minutes later Augusto might have added a third but skied his effort from ten yards.
Barça tried to raise the rhythm but Celta were fired up even more by the goals and their defence fought aggressively for every ball. Iniesta managed to thread one pass through to Neymar on the right but by cutting inside one challenge the Brazilian allowed another defender to get back and block his shot.
The second half began with chances at both ends but Neymar and Aspas sent their shots wide. Then in the 53rd minute, Iniesta danced into the area before squaring to Messi who looked sure to score but pulled his shot against the post. Piqué then headed over from close range and Messi fired a volley from the left straight at the keeper.
Barça had to commit men forward but Celta took advantage in the 56th minute with a breakaway goal following a Barça corner. Alvarez punch the ball clear and it was then played on to Aspas who after flicking the ball past Mascherano, set off on a direct line towards goal. nobody could catch him and the striker again beat Ter Stegen, this time with a low shot inside the far post.
Luis Enriqué tried to cause a reaction by bringing on Munir for Sergi Roberto and reverting to the 4-2-3-1 seen against Levante, with Messi playing behind Munir, Suárez and Neymar. The finishing all night was below par and Munir and Neymar sent efforts wide. When the shots were at goal Alvarez got in the way of everything, stopping one from Munir and making probably his best stop of the night from Messi in the 63rd minute.  Rakitic was then brought on for Busquets to form the double pivot with Iniesta but the changes did little to improve things.
Barça finally pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when Messi found Neymar’s run with a quick free-kick and the Brazilian controlled before turning the ball past Alvarez. Munir then sent a chance wide which might have set up an exciting finish but all hope was ended in the 83rd minute when Guidetti fired home from Mallo’s cross.
Celta: Sergio Alvarez, Mallo, Cabral, Sergi Gomez, Jonny; Radoja (Pablo Hernández m76), Augusto, Wass (Planas m85); Orellano, Aspas (Guidetti m78), Nolito..
Barça:  Ter Stegen 5; Alves 5.5, Piqué 5, Mascherano 4.5, Mathieu 4.5; Sergi Roberto 5.5 (Munir m58, 5), Busquets 4.5 (Rakitic m68, 5.5), Iniesta 6; Messi 5.5, Suárez 5, Neymar 5.5.

Piqué returns for leaders Barça at Celta
http://ift.tt/1LtF79m
Gerard Piqué returns to league action following his four-match suspension as Barça take on Celta de Vigo at Balaidos tomorrow night (Wednesday 8.00 pm). Without Piqué, the defending champions have begun La Liga 2015/16 with four straight victories and Luis Enriqué will be looking to extend the 100% record in order to maintain the early advantage over closest rivals Real Madrid who also play tomorrow at Athletic Club at San Mames.
Sandro misses the trip with a minor injury so Gerard Gumbau continues with the first team squad after making his league debut in the 4-1 win over Levante on Sunday. Andrés Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez wrre all rested at the weekend and along with Piqué they should all return to the starting XI which, in theory, could see the first repeat of the line-up of Ter Stegen, Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba, Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta, Messi, Suárez and Neymar that last lined up together for the Champions League Final against Juventus in June. The most likely variant would be a place for Sergi Roberto who also sat out against Levante. The youngster might get another chance at right-back in place of Dani Alves or he could be used in midfield to give a rest to either Sergio Busquets or Ivan Rakitic. Jeremy Mathieu, who scored the winner in last season’s corresponding fixture, is another option if Luis Enrique wants to reserve Mascherano.
Opponents Celta have begun the season strongly with three victories over Levante (1-2), Rayo (3-0) and Sevilla (1-2) and just one draw (3-3 at home to Las Palmas) to spoil the record. Four ex-blaugranas, who all played under Luis Enrique at Barça B, Nolito, Andreu Fontas, Sergi Gomez and Carles Planas, are currently playing at the Galician club. Nolito will no doubt be the player to watch, given Barça’s possible interest in signing him. The striker has got off to an excellent start to the season, firing in four of Celta’s ten goals in the four games played.
Finally, Rafinha successfully underwent his knee operation this morning. His recovery period is estimated at six months.
Possible teams:
Celta: Sergio Álvarez; Hugo Mallo, Sergi Gomez, Fontás, Jonny; Augusto Fernandez, Wass; Orellana, Pablo Hernández, Nolito; Aspas.
Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Sergi Roberto, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez, Neymar.
Prediction: Celta 1 Barça 3

Barça see off Levante to stay top of La Liga
http://ift.tt/1OJcDcA
Barça stay top of La Liga for another week after a 4-1 victory over Levante at Camp Nou tonight. Following a disappointing goalless first half, Marc Bartra broke the deadlock in the 50st minute before a goal from Neymar and a Leo Messi penalty made it 3-0 on the hour. Victor Casadesús pulled a goal back for the visitors after a Ter Stegen mistake and there was time for Messi to fire another penaty over the crossbar before the Argentinian completed the scoring with a fine individual effort.
There were plenty of surprises in Luis Enrique’s team selection. Dani Alves returned at right-back and there were first league starts of the season for Marc Bartra and Adriano Correira in defence. Sandro Ramirez and Munir El-Haddadi also started their first games of the season as Barça started with four forwards, Messi and Neymar and the two youngsters, while Sergi Busquets and Ivan Rakitic were the only recognised midfielders. The team set out in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Messi fitting in behind centre-forward Sandro.
With Levante playing a 5-3-2 system, the intention of Luis Enrique was for Messi to find space and start the moves from deep. However, the changes meant a slow start from the team as the players adapted to the new shape. Sandro was up against three central defenders and struggled to get a look in while Neymar was closely watched by Ivan Lopez. Munir was quiet on Barça’s right as he mainly worked to open space for Alves’s advances but overall there was a lack of penetration with a lack of support from midfield.
Messi tried to work his magic, having two shots saved by Ruben and heading over from Alves’s cross. He also sent Neymar through on the left only for the Brazilian to pull his shot past the far post. However, the best chance of the first half came after Ter Stegen’s long kick sent Munir away, but the young striker over-elaborated in the area, cutting inside Toño, which allowed Ruben the chance to rush off his line and block the shot. There was liitle seen of Levante going forward but on one dangerous break Ghilas got past Mascherano in the area but then sliced his shot well wide.
It was a frustrating first half to watch but the Camp Nou faithful didn’t have to wait long after the restart for something to celebrate. Bartra decided to make a charge forward and despite losing the ball, Alves was following up and he found Messi who crossed to the far post to where Bartra had continued his run. Bartra chested the ball down before hooking his shot inside the post.
Barça went further ahead in the 56th minute when Rakitic found Alves who crossed to the far post where Neymar had two bites at the cherry but squeezed his second shot through a pack of legs. Then shortly after, Neymar was brought down by Trujillo’s challenge and Messi sent his penalty high into the net to make it 3-0.
Luis Enrique chose the moment to make his only change of the game, bringing on Gerard Gumbau for his league debut in place of Busquets. Unfortunately this coincided with Barça losing a bit of control and Levante pulled a goal back when Ter Stegen failed to reach a cross from the left, allowing Casadesús a relatively easy finish. The debate over the German keeper is sure to continue but he demonstrated enough last season to deserve our patience.
It is evidently impossible to erradicate mistakes from the game and soon after Messi was guilty of another, blasting his second penalty of the night over the bar after Feddal had pulled his shirt. There might have been a third penalty but referee Fernandez Borbalán waved play on after Rakitic was felled by Juanfran’s challenge.
Messi made up for his error at the end with a typically stylish individual goal. Receiving the ball from Bartra, the Argentinian turned and ran at the defence, evading two defenders before shooting low from the edge of the area into the corner of the net.
Barça: Ter Stegen 5.5; Alves 7, Bartra 7, Mascherano 6, Adriano 5.5; Busquets 6 (Gumbau m62, 6), Rakitic 6, Munir 5.5, Messi 8, Neymar 6.5; Sandro 6.
Levante: Rubén; Iván López, Trujillo, Feddal, Juanfran, Toño; Camarasa (Ruben Garcia m80), Verza, Lerma; Ghilas (Casadesús m63), Roger (Deyverson m68).
Goals: m50 Bartra 1-0, m56 Neymar 2-0, m61 Messi (pen) 3-0, m66 Casadesús 3-1, m90 Messi 4-1.
Yellow card: m45 Verza

Dani Alves set to return against Levante
http://ift.tt/1PckXQk
Early league leaders Barça take on Levante at Camp Nou tomorrow evening (Sunday 8.30 pm) with the goal of maintaining the two-point advantage over closest rivals Real Madrid. Gerard Piqué will serve the last of his four-match suspension while Luis Enrique is also without the injured Claudio Bravo, Douglas, Thomas Vermaelen and Rafinha. The good news is that Dani Alves is fit again and should return at right-back. Gerard Gumbau from Barça B has been called up to the first team again to make up the 18-man squad for the game.
Rafinha’s injury in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Roma has left the squad with a serious lack of back-up in midfield and attack. The first choice players, Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta, Messi, Suárez and Neymar cannot be expected to play every game but with no Xavi, no Pedro, and now no Rafinha to come in, the possible altertatives until January are extremely limited. Youngsters Sandro and Munir are the only natural attackers and they both still have a lot to prove. With Alves back, Sergi Roberto will undoubtedly get more opportunities in midfield but we may also see Mascherano and possibly Jordi Alba used further forward.
Given that Barça face a tough trip to Vigo to face Celta on Wednesday, Luis Enrique seems likely to use tomorrow’s game to rest a couple of regulars. Marc Bartra could get a chance in central defence while the possibility to play Jeremy Mathieu or Adriano at left-back or Sergi Roberto in midfield offer more alternatives. Sandro or Munir could be used to rest one of the forwards but it seems more likely they will be used as substitutes. A possible starting XI might be Ter Stegen in goal, a back four of Alves, Bartra, Mascherano and Mathieu, a midfield of Sergi Roberto, Busquets and Iniesta, with Messi, Suárez and Neymar up front.
Opponents Levante are usually seen as relegation candidates but they are now in their sixth consecutive season in the top flight. Coach Lucas Alcaraz took over in October 2014 and under his guidance they finished 14th last season but they avoided the drop by just two points. This season they have begun with a 1-2 home defeat to Celta, a 0-0 draw at Las Palmas and a 1-1 home draw against Sevilla. Alcaraz will be without the injured David Navarro and the suspended Simao Mate but besides that Levante are at full strength and seem likely to continue with the 5-3-2 formation used so far this season.
Last season Barça beat Levante 5-0 at home and 0-5 at Levante.
Barça’s 18-man squad: Ter Stegen, Masip, Alves, Adriano, Bartra, Mascherano, Mathieu, Alba, Busquets, Gumbau, Sergi Roberto, Rakitic, Iniesta, Messi, Suárez, Sandro, Munir, Neymar.
Possible teams:
Barça: Ter Stegen; Alves, Bartra, Mascherano, Mathieu; Sergi Roberto, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez, Neymar.
Levante: Ruben; Morales, Trujillo, Feddal, Juanfran, Toño; Camarasa, Mari, Verza; Ghilas, Deyverson.
Prediction: Barça 3 Levante 0

Rafinha out for at least six months
http://ift.tt/1KjzCpz
The worst possible news was announced today when it was confirmed that Rafinha has a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee which will see the player out of action for a minimum of six months. Rafinha will undergo an operation soon and in the best of scenarios he will return to training at the end of March. The Brazilian midfielder was injured shortly after coming on in last night’s Champions League game at Roma after a tackle from behind by Radja Nainggolan. It is the second time this year that Nainggolan has seriously injured a player after he broke the leg of Chievo’s Federico Mattiello in a Serie A match in March.
