Mid Florida Community Services will close its House to Home Thrift Store effective July 31, 2024, located at 19450 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601. The store sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials and more at reduced retail prices. Immediately, the store will no longer be accepting donations. Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. closing House to Home Thrift Store on July 31. “It was a difficult decision. However, from a mission, financial, strategic, and competitive landscape perspective, it is no longer in the best interest of the organization to operate the thrift store. There are many other thriving thrift stores operating throughout Hernando County, and it’s better suited for us to support them as a community partner. Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney: Ode to Z-Man

Fishing after a front, during a full moon, and moderate west, northwest, and east winds is a chore. I've endured many springs like this over the years and it reminds me of my good friend, industry partner, andmentor, Captain Mark Zorn (Z Man - not the lure). Captain Mark Zorn and I have fished together through the Plantation of Crystal River with Bob Chappell and Roger Batchelor in the old days. This is where I learned to be competitive in the guiding industry because Z Man always was the top dog. Many times I would try to follow his drift and pattern his routine but it never worked, no matter how hard I tried. As he and I fished together at the Homosassa Fishing Club I found myself not trying to beat him, but instead, trying to mimic him in his guiding skills. As a mentor Z Man taught me to always put the client first. Know your anglers' skills and adapt to their expectations. Put your ego in your back pocket and don't let it interfere with the day's work. I now want to wish Captain Mark Zorn a very nice and well-deserved retirement. Thank you for always being who you are and the one and only Captain Z. The trout bite has been tight so if you are catching a few, stick to the area. The red fishing is most consistent in the last hour of the incoming tide and I've done best with live or cut pinfish a few keysin the backcountry. The nearshore rocks have been at best O.K. but if you're in the 8 to 10-foot range looking for trout etc... make sure to have a heavy spinning reel to handle a keeper cobia. Director of Saint Leo University’s Master’s in Creative Writing Awarded

During National Poetry Month, it’s fitting to congratulate Saint Leo University’s Dr. Anne Barngrover, who has been awarded the 2023 Bronze Medal by the Florida Book Awards for her poetry collection, Everwhen. Barngrover, associate professor of creative writing, and director of the Master of Arts in Creative Writing Program, will attend the awards ceremony in Tallahassee, FL, at the end of April. Director of Saint Leo University’s Master’s in Creative Writing Awarded 2023 Bronze Medal in Florida Book Awards The Florida Book Awards were established in 2006. The 18th annual competition featured 170eligible publications submitted across 11 categories for books published in 2023. Barngrover’s Everwhen will be among the other Florida Book Award-winning books onpermanent display in the library at the Governor's Mansion in Tallahassee and in an exhibitcase on the third floor of Florida State University's Strozier Library. Published by the University of Akron Press, the award-winning Everwhen is Barngrover’s thirdpoetry collection. 15th Annual RAP River Run

The race has raised over $1.3 million to support YFA’s RAP House for at-risk youth.  15th Annual RAP River Run, presented by Spring Engineering, is June 8th at Sims Park in Downtown New Port Richey  The 15th Annual RAP River Run is scheduled for June 8th at Sims Park in historic downtown New Port Richey and includes a 10K, 5K and Kid’s Adventure Fun Run. The race consistently draws thousands of elite and recreational runners, walkers, and health enthusiasts, and is recognized as one of Tampa Bay’s premier running events. The scenic course leads along the beautiful Cotee River, and Sims Park provides the perfect post-race venue where racers and thousands of community supporters, volunteers, vendors, and sponsors convene and celebrate the run. Youth Leadership Pasco Program Graduates Class of 2024

The Youth Leadership Pasco Class of 2024 celebrated their graduation at breakfast on March 15, 2024, at Timber Greens Country Club. More than 100 sponsors, school officials, parents and Leadership Pasco Board members were there to cheer on the graduating students. Youth Leadership Pasco Program Graduates Class of 2024 Youth Leadership Pasco is a leadership development program that informs, motivates, and increases the awareness of selected high school aged students (Sophomores and Juniors) through issue-oriented seminars and interaction with community leaders. Sessions include Orientation and Team Building, Law Enforcement, Health Care/Community Services, Government/Economic Development and Education. Escaping the Busy, Busy World at Key Vista Nature Park

It cried out into the wilderness, a sad song among the chirps and tweets of the other feathered inhabitants that habituate this wild green space. Key Vista Nature Park in Holiday offers an Idyllic Escape Located on Pasco County’s Gulf Coast, Key Vista Nature Park is like a balm to a busy soul. You can lose yourself in nature in this surprising Nature Coast park. Several hiking trails lead from the parking lot, but unmarked, they invite the adventurous to hike forth and explore. The 1.5 miles of trails all loop through the pine scrublands and meet eventually in the 101 acres of wilderness, but if you’re looking for signage to tell you which way to go, this might not be for you. We drove through quiet subdivisions just north of Tarpon Springs to reach Pasco County’s Key Vista Nature Park. There’s a restroom by the park entrance and a shaded kiosk with lots of info about the park’s flora and fauna. Someone even added a history of pirate activity in the area, dating back to the 1500s. But park map? You won’t find one there! Choose Your Trail The 1.5-miles of hiking trails are sugar sand and loop through the pine scrubland at Key Vista Nature Park. Photo by Sally White. We were on a ladies’ hiking day out and ready for an outdoor adventure. We grabbed our water bottles, locked the car, and wondered which trail to take. We spotted a group of 3 men pulling a wagon of fishing buckets and poles. They headed down the center trail. An older man in hiking boots and a hat headed down the path by the restroom, where a couple and their kids had just come up. We followed him. He looked like he knew where things were for hikers. Immediately on the trail, we heard the high-pitched call of an osprey, stopping to see if we could see the bird, and promptly losing the hiker we were following. A well-worn path of sugar sand and pine needles wound through the arid scrub landscape. Pine trees towered above, and below stands of palmettoes and wildflowers peppered the forest floor. Beside it, a scraggly wild Chickasaw plum shaded them both. Wild grape vines covered fallen brush like a camouflage netting, providing shade and shelter for the ecosystem’s smaller critters. Our trail met with one of the others from the parking lot at an open meadow with a lone picnic table and trash can affixed to a post, the only interior signs that this was a park. Sandy Shores & Mangrove Tunnels We continued on our way and around a bend when the view of green-blue water through a cut in the trees caught our line of vision. To the right of it, a 3-story wooden observation tower rose into view. The base of the platform was decorated with wild grape vines. The color of the water was too hard to resist, and we dove down the tiny path through the underbrush to a stretch of white sandy shoreline at the water’s edge. Photo by Sally White Beach would not be the real term to use, and like the hiking trail signs, or lack of them, Key Visita Nature Park proved once again to defy the expected. The sandy strip of land stretched out on either side of us along the park’s Gulf coast border but stands of black and red mangroves along the water broke up the sandy areas into smaller, more private sections. Photo by Sally White Had we come earlier, we might have felt like Robinson Crusoe. But on this Sunday afternoon, the locals had descended onto the park for a day in the Florida outdoors. There is no swimming here, due to the oyster beds in the water, but children played along the shoreline, building sandcastles and marveling at the physics of water. Anglers waded into the water to cast their lines and teens sunbathed with their air pods in, enjoying the sunny day, while dog owners guided their furry friends around the human obstacles along the coastal path. Photo by Sally White We headed north through the mangrove tunnel paths, where red mangrove roots entwined with one another in an elaborate dance of nature. Around their leggy roots, the black mangrove roots rose from the sandy earth like an audience to watch the dance. Trail on Rocky Creek We hiked across the beach trail until we saw the three fishermen from the parking lot. They had set up their gear in the shady area along the limestone rocks at the mouth of Rocky Creek. The tidal Rocky Creek provides the northern border of Key Vista Nature Park. There were cuts to the water for fishing spots and natural limestone formations and benches trailside to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The creek widened the farther we went. A motorboat puttered by, heading out to the gulf while a group of teenagers argued in a canoe about who was not paddling correctly. Photo by Sally White Observation Tower at Key Vista Nature Park We looped back to climb the observation tower and were awarded an expansive view of the Gulf of Mexico. It was a sunny afternoon and the winds whipped around us on the top floor of the tower. To the south, we could see the fishing pier at the neighboring park. Photo by Sally White Back down to land, we found the one sign in the park, “Anclote Gulf Park. Boardwalk to Dog Park.” The trail cut through a sunny scrubland area of the park. Sulphur rotten-egg smells emitted from the tidal creek under a small boardwalk along the trail and mosquitoes swarmed around the wetlands. We picked up our pace and eventually reached the steps to the boardwalk. It twisted and turned over a mangrove swamp. A pair of Ibis watched us from a perch in their tree as we passed, knowing we’d be back. Past red, black, and white mangroves, we eventually came to the Anclote Gulf Park. Photo by Sally White The complete opposite of Key Vista, this park sported paved paths, mowed grass, a playground, and concrete restrooms. It looked nice. It looked clean, but it wasn’t for us. We backtracked on the boardwalk back to Key Vista and the observation tower and rejoined our original path back toward the parking lot. That’s when we heard the call in the woods. Oou oou. It sounded like a sad owl. Looking up we saw the mourning dove, calling out. Was it in search of a mate that might never return or calling to its children? We would never know. Dining Nearby After a day of outdoor recreation, dining options abound at the nearby Greek Floridian town of Tarpon Springs. Grab a traditional Greek meal in one of the restaurants along Dodecanese Street in the Sponge Capital of the World or take a turn onto Main Street to sample one of the many options in downtown New Port Richey, ranging from Thai and Sushi to bar food and even traditional high tea. The Leadership Pasco Recruitment Committee is excited to announce the upcoming Class of 2025. We are inviting emerging and already flourishing community leaders who reside or work in Pasco County to apply for the Leadership Pasco Class of 2025. Leadership Pasco Accepting Applications for Class of 2025 Applicants will be chosen from a competitive pool of individuals that are interested in learning about the important challenges facing Pasco County and committed to utilizing their leadership abilities for its long-term benefit. Since 1990, Leadership Pasco has introduced business and community leaders to major facets of the Pasco County community through an intensive ten-month course. Class members participate in full-day program sessions, tours, and candid conversations with community leaders to broaden their local understanding of the ever-changing needs of Pasco County. Topics include criminal justice, tourism, healthcare, education, government, infrastructure, media, and business industries. In addition, each Leadership Pasco class is responsible for making a positive impact within thecommunity by organizing a Class Project that brings charitable people and resources together to address a particular social, educational, economic, environmental, or cultural need in Pasco County. Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0

Bus Tour 2.0 made history on March 12, 2024, as the first Leadership Pasco alumni and community mobile networking and educational event. It was an idea from a board meeting executed through the leadership of board member Kathy Masucci '22 and the alumni committee. Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0, an Alumni and Community Experience The day began with a light breakfast and networking at Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus, Wesley Chapel. From there the sold-out event group boarded a 55 passenger Olympus Limo motor coach (with new bus smell) with destinations in Central and East Pasco. During the ride attendees learned about the major Pasco business and construction developments happening from the people in the know. Hope Kennedy, North Tampa Bay Chamber President shared so much about current and future Pasco demographics, business, and plans. She also spoke about the growth of infrastructure to match the numbers of new rooftops. The group also heard from Michael Wolf '24, Vice President, Columnar/DoubleBranch and Phillips & Jordan and Art Phelps, Senior Vice President, Industrial and Commercial, Phillips and Jordan, Inc. as we viewed the expansive mixed-use development, DoubleBranch, formerly known as Pasco Town Center. The project will feature 4 million square feet of industrial development, 725,000 square feet of offices, 400,000 square feet of retail, 3,500 housing units and 300 hotel beds on a 965-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 52. At completion, DoubleBranch will generate over $600 million in long-term economic impact on an estimated $2 billion buildout for the surrounding area. As companies locate, the development is anticipated to be home to 6,000 jobs including many in the logistics, life sciences, and healthcare target industry sectors. Mike Bishop '17, Senior Vice President, Pasco Economic Development Council (PEDC) spoke about projects the PEDC is involved in around the county and answered many questions along the way about land for sale, recently sold, or in development. The tour learned more about PEDC's mission and structure. PEDC is the lead economic development organization dedicated to the overall growth and prosperity of Pasco County through the development of a sustainable and diversified economy. Pasco EDC is a private, non-profit organization that promotes countywide economic development and continues to be a strong partnership funded by corporate and public investors focused on the economic vitality of Pasco County. Bishop also spoke about SMARTstart Small Business program and other tools for small business success. The bus drove to the new Moffitt Innovation Campus, also known as Speros for a tasty lunch and presentation by Casey Cane, Moffitt, Speros FL, Pasco County Global Innovation Center. Speros is a 775-acre Pasco County campus to be used for the future of revolutionary cancer treatment and research. The campus will feature 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing, and clinical space. Several hundred acres will remain natural and a habitat for Florida wildlife. The tour learned the name Speros, is a derivative of the Latin verb “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or “to look forward to." Approximately 14,000 Moffitt team members will be employed on campus at projectcompletion. Harold Sample '91, was an attendee of the tour and shared Pasco County history with us, along with sights such as Angeline Academy of Innovation, Land 'O Lakes, and the Metro Lagoon communities of Eperson in Wesley Chapel and Mirada in San Antonio. Sample and Kurt Conover '92 retired from conducting our class Bus Tour with Class of 2024, and new leaders of Michele Baker '97 and Frances Werner-Wakins '11 will be taking on the two-day program in 2025. Both attended Bus Tour 2.0 and have been working with Sample and Conover on next-year's program day. The tour traveled back to the Wiregrass Recreation Center where they learned more about the tourism industry that is putting Pasco on the map. Tourism Day is our newest program day, so most of our alumni have not experienced the full day. Adam Thomas '24 Director of Florida's Sports Coast, our tourism bureau, and co-chair of Tourism Day presented that component along with a tour and details on Wiregrass Recreation Center by Ronnie Outen, Operations Manager and Basketball Director. Attendees concluded with an optional happy hour at Skybox, Wesley Chapel’s only rooftop bar, at Residence Inn. It was a beautiful day, and a great way to travel around the county to learn from the best and have some great conversations with new and old friends. Many of the attendees are members of the community who plan to learn more about Leadership Pasco or who have plans to apply for Class of 2025.
