𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍: haphephobia .
After the events of the Reapers Barge, Kaz developed haphephobia, a fear of skin-on-skin contact through touching or being touched. Initiating skin-on-skin contact, or even just shaking hands with another person while still wearing his gloves, will often make his skin crawl. When touched, or touching another person without a material to act as a barrier, or when surrounded by many bodies within small enclosed spaces, Kaz will experience feelings of anxiety, nausea, and vivid flashbacks of his time on the Reapers Barge and of Jordie's death. If the physical touch continues, he'll begin hyperventilating, will break out into a cold sweat, and experience heart palpitations, if the physical touch goes on longer, Kaz will sometimes lose consciousness and pass out.
Kaz is extremely aware of his own phobia and has attempted to overcome his fear once before in his early teens by carefully exposing himself to skin-on-skin contact within what he believed was a controlled environment. However, Kaz was quickly overwhelmed by the contact, leading to him keeping his hands covered by gloves and never allowing himself to have skin-on-skin contact with another person unless absolutely necessary.
Due to spending almost a decade without skin-on-skin contact that wasn't violent, Kaz experiences skin hunger. Also known as touch deprivation or touch starvation, a condition developed due to lack of casual and affectionate skin-on-skin contact with others. When Kaz allows for skin-on-skin contact, aside from the previously mentioned experiences, it is often painful, sometimes feeling as if his skin is on fire which continues to compell Kaz to avoid it despite knowing that the only cure for such an extreme response is more skin-on-skin contact.
Kaz will often react with extreme hostility or violence whenever someone touches, or attempts, to touch him without his consent. Due to the reputation that he has built for himself among the Dregs and the people of the Barrel, people know not to touch him and as such he hasn't had to react as violently has he once did when he was climbing the ladder but he is always prepared to react regardless.
Recently, Kaz has begun to make a second attempt to overcome his haphephobia with Inej, but it is extremely difficult and his progress is slow. Kaz struggles most notably with his vivid flashbacks and can go through months of not making any progress and often slips back into previous reactions despite his best efforts but he is trying and will continue to try not only for Inej, but for himself.
Kaz will eventually overcome his haphephobia and touch deprivation through controlled exposure with a trusted confidant, and by facing and coming to terms with his trauma but it will be a long work in progress. Kaz will never be a cuddly or particularly physically affectionate man, but he will become more willing to express physical affection with those he trusts.
