there's this borderline hysterical laugh garak breaks into a couple of times during the early seasons that is so special to me. like. this man. this man is so high (constantly) and probably drunk (frequently) and he's at all times teetering on the very brink of despair that only pure spite, immense stubbornness, and getting to gaze at julian bashir's smiling face across the lunch table once a week is holding him back from tipping over. and then he has to deal with people like skrain dukat and gul toran on top of that and you can practically hear the cracks forming as he's barely holding on to whatever remains of his sanity by the skin of his teeth
thinking about the recurring theme of sisko being someone who constantly comes adrift in time, literally and metaphorically, physically and emotionally. no matter how much he wants to stay here, and how hard he tries to, he drifts, he comes unmoored. you exist here. and always existing here means he can't exist there simultaneously; one precludes the other. and the grief of that truth that rings like a bell through his whole existence at once. hm.
I enjoy Kira/Keiko as a ship, but I wish that most of the discussion about them didn’t center on the “O’Brien polycule”. I’m interested in how their dynamic changed from vaguely adversarial in “In the Hands of the Prophets” to friendly in later seasons. I want to know how they navigated the differences in their opinions on faith and religion. I want to know if/how Keiko’s thoughts on Bajoran religion changed over time. I want to know if Kira experienced any lingering resentment toward Keiko. I want to know how long it took them to become friends – if one or both of them made a great effort to mend the divide between them. I want to know if they have disagreements after that or if they carefully try to avoid speaking about topics where their opinions differ. There’s a lot that’s potentially interesting about their dynamic outside of how it relates to Miles.
bashir’s internal monologue as he turns garak’s chin to the side to examine his wound: ha! i finally got one over on him. i’m in control now.
garak’s thoughts as he uses every ounce of his self-restraint not to launch himself at bashir: doctor if you aren’t out of my way in two seconds i won’t be responsible for what happens next
MAXWELL: What was the name of the fellow who always hung around you like a puppy?
O'BRIEN: Will Kayden. Stompie.
MAXWELL: Stompie. As cool under fire as a mountain lake.
O'BRIEN: Yes, sir.
MAXWELL: He died at Setlik, didn't he?
O'BRIEN: Yes, sir.
MAXWELL: What was that song of his? The one he always sang, the one I liked?
O'BRIEN: (sings) The minstrel boy to the war has gone. In the ranks of death you will find him...
(Star Trek: The Next Generation, 'The Wounded')
there is o'brien/will kayden fic in the universe (3 stories) and i suddenly cannot believe it is not a huge thing.
like.
'the minstrel boy' stays with o'brien as his song until the very last episode of ds9.
ALWAYS HUNG AROUND YOU LIKE A PUPPY.
'stompie', there is so clearly a story there.
WHY DON'T WE TALK MORE ABOUT O'BRIEN'S FIRST BOYFRIEND.
My only real beef with NuTrek set at the same time that Bashir and Garak exist is that they haven't had the balls to make it screen canon. Like, it was there in DS9 to the point the Powers that Be had to tell Alexander Siddig & Andrew Robinson to Knock It Off, and separated the characters as much as they could without pissing off the entire fan base.
The actors saw it, the fans saw it, it is there!! If you can give us Picard and bring back all those people and little nods, you sure as hell can give us 30 seconds of Bashir consulting with Beverly with Cardassia in the background and Garak popping over Bashir's shoulder to ask about her magic-borg-son.
