trying to land on a background/visual style i’m happy with, especially one that is approachable for the timecrunch, and my hand that is already starting to hurt really bad (which has made working kinda scary). im going to have to see how that goes! otherwise though, i like some elements of this but it still isn’t totallty working? hoping i can iron it out over time, since it feels like im relearning digital painting all over again.
oh boy another animatic! i whisper cringe but free cringe but free as this film becomes cuter with each pass. it took a while but i think its the most coheseive its been though. definitely nice to see, but i reallllly need to start chugging with the rest of production. :’)
In all honesty though, I was at least really pushed to think about my aesthetic choices, as well as the quality of the animation, when moving forward. I’ve lightly touched on these before, though in light of the test shot (above) going so poorly, I’m going to need to revise my strategy a bit more. I spent a lot of time on the animatic making my story “work,” and now I may need time to really pivot into how I’m actually getting it off the ground.
Playing with compositing in after effects was fun though. It didn’t work with this too well, but I actually set it up and watched some videos covering it, so it’ll be a useful asset.
MUWHAHAHA ITS DONE AND ITS CUTE?? MAYBE. I mean I think it is, and that’s what matters. so. BUT YES the animatic is finally complete, revisions and all! The story is camp and I love it so much. The boys are hanging out.
I was even able to make the pacing slower at the end and I think that is very cool. :’)c
busy busy busyyyy! i like finally revamped a bunch of work schedules and im honestly pretty proud of it? i struggle with managing to work consistently, so i added a tracker to pay attention to how frequently im working during the week. it ALSO has a section to determine what i accomplished once each week is done. film?? getting done. B)
hhahhhh! a! the animatic's finally finished for the whole film. i'm really liking the ending! though im not sure the pacing/events in the middle read tooooo well yet :/ (gotta do some cleanup soon).
Animatic first pass! Kinda :') Super super excited because I finally think I've narrowed down a clear direction and message for my film. Though getting there ate up a bit of time I wanted for getting a first pass done by the end of the week.
I've been working to figure out what I want the film to say. I'm gravitating towards the "beauty" of art created by the person, and that core message of who we make art for. I've also found a lot of inspiration in films that show things like vhs tapes or recordings being shared in a kind act. There is still something carefree, but personal, about the message of the "low" art being intrinsically special because it's from the individual.
So I want the film to say how art doesn't need to look "one way" when it's for someone else. What makes it special is that intrinsic beauty that comes from your own self when doing it. This feels right too?? The conflict for the character is realizing the beauty of their work is from them making it, but it shouldn't be in some sweaping gesture.
I'm thinking a final way to present this would be the MC is recording themselves playing a song for someone, then the events of the film, and in the end they set it up outside and begin idly playing again. Even if the phone falls back away from them or something it's okay, since it's more about being in that moment together.
This would be a narrative, linear film for the most part again (kinda similar to the first film). I'd like to use the fish or an absract segment, though I'm not sure if it themeatically fits since the instrument/playing isn't as core a plot beat.
OKAY SO! More film thoughts... I'm trying to figure out what I want the film to say, or the core message that resonates for me. It could be fun to shake things up a bit too.
The core idea of the character playing an instrument, then the water coming out is really interesting. I also find the idea of the character's journey being how they learn to live in the moment, or slow down in order to appreciate the beauty of their work a lot more interesting.
With that! I'm thinking of a film that follows a similar setup, the character is playing a song and rushes through it. However, the conflict is more representational, where the water escallates to a fish to popping out. There would then be an experimental segment involving the fish and the water to show a change in mindset. I'd still need to iron out the details, but being more loose with the narrative and animation while still getting across that theme is really interesting - having the film be more of an expirinece with the beginning and end acting as quiet bookends.
Hey! It’s been a while :’) I’m working on my junior film, and I thought I’d talk about it! To you! Here!
The working title is “Song of the Century,” or like Nicky’s untitled film that they’ll hopefully finish (and it’s gonna look great I swear). The idea is that it would be a narrative, character driven piece about a rabbit musician that learns to find fulfillment in their work after growing frustrated. The piece would have a narrative arc but I’m really interested in a slower pace then my first film, really playing up the quiet elements of the narrative - making it almost slice of life but a step above?
The point of the film is more of a “why we create art,” and why you should create art for yourself. The main character is in a rut, though by the end they’ll find that “inspiration” again by playing for themselves.
For a fun hook, I have this idea in mind that as the character gets more frustrated, water will pour out of their instrument. Eventually the water will flood into their home and they’ll have to get out. The film ends with them freestyling music on the roof of their house, their entire town flooded.
