Native to parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, these parrots have been introduced to North America, Europe, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Japan. Their diet is made up of seeds, fruits, flowers, vegetables, and occasionally insects. Unlike other parrots, which nest in cavities, Quaker Parrots build stick nests. These nests often house as many as 12 pairs of birds and allow them to survive winters in areas much colder than their native habitats. They maintain these nests year-round and often roost as well as raise chicks in them. Quaker Parrots are popular in captivity, where several color mutations have been bred, including blue, cinnamon, and lutino.
