Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira: A creative midfielder with the intelligence of ‘wise old men’
Arsenal have landed a young footballer of the highest pedigree.
Mikel Arteta has been a key influence in this signing. Although Vieira’s progress had been tracked by Arsenal’s wider recruitment team, it was ultimately the manager’s conviction about the player that pushed this deal through.
The speed of the club’s move to complete the transfer took even some Arsenal staff by surprise. It did not prove a difficult negotiation: a fee of €35 million plus €5 million in add-ons was ultimately considered reasonable, especially as it fell some way below the player’s buy-out clause. Privately, some close to Porto insist that Arsenal have got themselves a bargain.
Vieira undoubtedly fits the recent profile of Arsenal signing, though. Although only just 22, he has an old head on young shoulders. In some respects, he was regarded as one of the leaders of a brave new generation at Porto. After he scored a brace in a 3-0 win over Santa Clara, Porto assistant coach Vitor Bruno said simply: “Fabio Vieira has the intelligence of wise old men.”
For many English scouts, Vieira first appeared on the radar at the 2019 UEFA Youth League. The final saw an impressive Porto side come up against Chelsea. The Londoners’ line-up included Tariq Lamptey, Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher — it was their second final in succession, having faced Barcelona the year before. Porto’s team included goalkeeper Diogo Costa, now a full Portugal international, and Fabio Silva, currently of Wolves.
But it was the slight 18-year-old in the centre of the midfield, Vieira, who most caught the eye. He ghosted into the box to open the scoring after 17 minutes, and his intelligent play helped Porto secure a 3-1 victory.
“It is a victory of a squad, of a structure, of a club,” said Porto’s proud coach Mario Silva. “We were the first club in Portugal to achieve it.” Silva added that the names of Vieira and his team-mates would be “recorded in the history of Portuguese football”.

Sport1 zufolge tendiert Götze in Richtung Bundesliga.

Calvin Ramsay On Learning From The Best: Trent Alexander-Arnold
The young Scottish fullback is eager to learn from Trent, and push him for a spot in the first team. Ambitious. Not many Liverpool supporters had “backup right back” on the list of top transfer priorities, and yet here we are, with the third and final incoming player of the window being exactly that. Calvin Ramsay might not be the most exciting signing, but he could very well end up as an important one.As we know, fullbacks are massively important to the way Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool play. Trent Alexander-Arnold, in particular, has redefined the role and become one of the most dangerous and creative players in the world. Those are hard boots to fill, but Ramsay has been up in Scotland, watching and learning, and thinks there’s room for him to grow and develop, and even challenge for a first team role.“He’s a massive player, he’s been brilliant so far,” Ramsay said about Trent. “I watched him the whole of last season and just the way he plays, I think it’s almost similar to me [in] the way he attacks and stuff like that, we’re both still young.“But he’s an unreal player. So to be coming in here and learning off him, it’s just going to be amazing for me and I’m going to learn a lot. It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be a challenge but it’s one that I’m up for and hopefully I can go and challenge to get into the starting XI.“Because obviously he’s young and he’s just been brilliant – everyone in football knows that. Even before there was interest from Liverpool, I looked up to him because he’s similar to the way that I play, like I said – his attacking, his crossing, he can use both feet, his passing range is obviously quite similar to mine. Just being in here every day with not just him, but all the players, they’re top professionals and I’m going to learn a lot and become a better player.”However, Ramsay does not seem content to sit on the sidelines and learn quietly from his world-class teammates. He has seen other young players—including the man in the spot he hopes to make his own—come through the ranks at Liverpool under Klopp.

Calvin Ramsay: I joined Liverpool because of the pathway for young players
Calvin Ramsay revealed his decision to join Liverpool was massively influenced by the club's reputation of providing the platform for young players to flourish in the first team.
The 18-year-old full-back has signed a long-term contract with the Reds after arriving from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, with the transfer subject to international clearance.
Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.com at the AXA Training Centre, Ramsay detailed his excitement at playing for the team he's supported since an early age, while looking forward to the prospect of continuing to hone his skills under Jürgen Klopp's guidance.
Watch our sit-down interview with Liverpool's new No.22 in the video above, or read on for a full transcript…
Calvin, congratulations, welcome to Liverpool. How does it feel to be here and a Liverpool player?
Thank you very much. It's special, to be honest. I came down yesterday and had my medical today and my first look around the training ground, so it's been brilliant. The facilities are unbelievable and all the staff already have been so kind to me and it's a pleasure to meet everyone. I'm looking forward to it.
A lot can happen in football, can't it? You hear of interest, things don't go that way – but when you knew it was Liverpool and you knew it was time to come here, how did you feel then emotionally?
Because I did well at Aberdeen, there was a lot of speculation, especially in January. But as soon as I heard the speculation from Liverpool, I just wanted to get it done, I knew that's the club that I wanted to go to. So finally, we're here, managed to get it done and I'm just buzzing, over the moon to be here. I can't wait to meet the fans and get started and show everyone what I can do.

Bayern Munich agree to sign Sadio Mane from Liverpool in deal worth up to €41m - sources
Bayern Munich have reached an agreement to sign Sadio Mane from Liverpool and end his six-year spell at Anfield, sources have told ESPN.
The Senegal international's future at Liverpool had been in serious doubt since forward Darwin Nunez joined the Premier League side from Benfica in a club-record deal worth up to €100 million.
A person familiar with the situation said on Friday that Liverpool have agreed a fee with the Bundesliga champions in a total package worth €41 million ($42.9m).
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the deal, which has not yet been completed.
Liverpool will receive €32m ($33.5m) up front for Mane, with a further €6m ($6.3m) due when he meets a specified appearance clause and an additional €3m ($3.15m) based on individual and team achievements.
Mane joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2016, arriving within the first 12 months of manager Jurgen Klopp's reign, and played a crucial role as the club returned to the top of English football -- he lifted the Champions League in 2019 and helped to end the club's 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020.
He also won the Club World Cup (2019), FA Cup (2022) and Carabao Cup (2022) as he scored 120 goals in 269 games in all competitions during his time at Liverpool.
There had been speculation throughout last season that Mohamed Salah could also leave this summer, but the forward confirmed last month that he will remain at Liverpool for the 2022-23 campaign.
Information from ESPN's Archie Rhind-Tutt and The Associated Press was included in this report.

Saying Goodbye to Liverpool Legend Sadio Mane
The time has come to say goodbye to Sadio Mané at Liverpool. By the time you read this, the deal with Bayern Munich could be official, but even if it isn’t for a few more days all the chatter from journalists in England and Germany indicates that it’s a done deal. Some I’s to cross and some T’s need to be dotted, perhaps, but we now know for certain that we’ve seen the last of Mané at Liverpool.
It’s not particularly a surprise at this stage of proceedings, given the arrival of Darwin Núñez earlier this week. The young Uruguayan forward can be Liverpool’s record signing if he ends up meeting certain performance based clauses. But there’s no secret that Jurgen Klopp and Director of Football Julian Ward are trying to rebuild the Liverpool attack while staying at the height of world football. Luis Diaz, who was originally slated to be signed this summer, was brought in during the January window 5 months ago. New additions often mean that current players need to move on just as Sadio is doing.
Goodbyes are a part of life. They’re painful in every way, but they’re one of the most certain things we can expect. It’s what makes scenes of movies so griping or the chorus of a song so moving or the end of the chapter so intriguing. They signal the end of a time before the beginning of one. If you had told me a few months ago that Sadio would be the first one of the vaulted Front Three to leave, I would’ve scoffed. I thought he’d be the last to leave, but here we are saying goodbye.
I was having a conversation with someone today about how at peace I am with this move. It is so much better to say goodbye on your terms than it is when things sour. We got the absolute best of Sadio Mané and nobody can take that away from us. Mané got the best of us as well. Rome. Barcelona at Anfield. Number six. The first title in 30 years. All of it.
It’s easy to think about The Front Three has a holy trinity; not separated but one deity. Sure, Roberto Firmino was here first, perhaps as the all-knowing Father, but the Front Three (and everything it meant for Liverpool beyond) wouldn’t be what it was without Sadio. He was the Spirit that catapulted us forward to greatness. He was the signing that transformed Liverpool into the side we see today. From his first goal against Arsenal where he bursts forth in glorious light down the right side, Mané has always been there when we needed him the most. Mané leaves Liverpool to head to Germany having won every trophy he can at Liverpool. That was unthinkable when he joined in 2016.

Darwin Nunez in, Sadio Mane out: All part of Liverpool's methodical evolution
Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez on a six-year deal from Benfica for a club-record fee of £85m before agreeing the £35m sale of Sadio Mane to Bayern; the moves are part of the evolution of Jurgen Klopp's teamSadio Mane's exit for Bayern Munich and Darwin Nunez's entry into Liverpool is a story of team evolution and how a taxing task was made straightforward by smart methodology...Over the past week, there has been discourse suggesting the signing of Darwin Nunez spelled the end of Sadio Mane's Anfield career.Prior to the Champions League final, Mohamed Salah's assertion that he would be remaining at Liverpool this summer sparked the same talk: a new beginning for the Senegal international. While getting a premier replacement in, and not wanting to lose two world-class forwards on a free next year forms part of the context of Mane's switch to Bayern Munich, the truth is his exit was an eventuality. The reason is simple: Evolution - on the player's behalf and Liverpool's. Mane was the first transformer of the Jurgen Klopp era and the club's successes over the past six years are owed in large part to his contributions on and off the ball.Mane has earned a fresh challenge, surroundings, and responsibility while Liverpool continue their process of advancing the squad without being heavily clouded by sentiment.Back in 2018, when the club prioritised a policy of retention and tied Roberto Firmino, Salah and Mane down with new long-term contracts, they visualised a number of scenarios.

Sadio Mane to leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich having played crucial role in club's transformation under Jurgen Klopp
Sadio Mane is nearing a £35.1m move to Bayern Munich; Senegalese international set to leave Liverpool after scoring 120 goals in 269 games, many of them crucial; Jurgen Klopp faces a challenge to replace the qualities that Mane gave LiverpoolJurgen Klopp probably didn't want to be addressing transfer rumours in his press conference ahead of the Champions League final but questions on Sadio Mane's future, however incongruous, were answered at length and with glowing praise.Mane was described as being "in the shape of his life" ahead of the final, with Klopp adding that he "couldn't care less" about stories linking him with Bayern Munich. "It's a joy to watch him at the moment in training and in games," said the Liverpool boss.Klopp already knew at that point the meeting with Real Madrid was likely to be Mane's last game for Liverpool. His desire for a new challenge became public within days of defeat at the Stade de France and, a month on, a move to Bayern appears imminent. It is telling, though, that Klopp was effusive in his praise of the 30-year-old until the last. Liverpool are loathe to lose him but there are no hard feelings. Not after everything he has done for them.

Sadio Mané leaving Liverpool after £35m Bayern Munich deal accepted
Liverpool have accepted Bayern Munich’s latest offer for Sadio Mané and the forward is due to have a medical before signing a three-year contract. Bayern are paying a guaranteed £28m and the fee could reach £35m with add-ons.
Mané told Liverpool of his desire to leave soon after the Champions League final and made Bayern his preferred destination. Bids from the German club were turned down before a deal was reached on Friday. Bayern’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, confirmed the move to Sky Sports in Germany on Friday evening. “Yes, Sadio is coming to Bayern,” he said. The Senegal international has been at Liverpool since 2016 and decided the time was right for a new experience. He had one year left on his contract. Liverpool wanted a replacement – as well as a suitable fee – and this week secured Darwin Núñez from Benfica in a deal that could reach £85m. Núñez, who turns 23 next week, is seven years younger than Mané.At Bayern, Robert Lewandowski is determined to leave for Barcelona, who are preparing a new bid for the striker after personal terms were agreed. The Pole is also being pursued by Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain but Bayern have said they have no intention of allowing him to move.Mané is the second first-team forward to leave Anfield this summer after Divock Origi, who was a far more peripheral figure and is due in Milan next week to sign for the Serie A champions. Mané started 32 of Liverpool’s Premier League games last season and 11 of their 13 Champions League fixtures. In 269 appearances for the club he scored 120 goals and assisted 48.
