The thing about disability being a social construct is largely true, because when you have a physical issue but receive accommodations + care such that they can do everything able-bodied people can, you're no longer considered disabled. Case in point: glasses. If glasses fix near-blindness, you're not considered disabled, even though you're basically blind without them.
In a hypothetical world where mech suits existed, were cheap and comfortable and accessible and worked well, and were normalised such that people didn't even notice, even quadreplegics wouldn't be considered disabled (although of course that's distant science fiction).
That's what "disability is a social construct" means. In the same way gender being a social construct doesn't mean boobs aren't real, or money being a social construct doesn't mean physical cash doesn't exist.
I don’t agree with this analysis at all.
What hypothetical disabled people might be able to do in the future holds no meaning in the current reality I occupy
You say that quadriplegics will be “considered” abled with exoskeletons - but then you fail to elaborate on the relationship between these devices, their users, and the people who supply them
My father has had type 1 diabetes for 30 years. 30 years is an entire lifetime for some people. The cost of his insulin increased literally that ENTIRE TIME until last year when the Biden admin put caps on insulin prices
Furthermore, his insulin pump retails for 4,600$, and if it breaks, he is still diabetic at the end of the day and will slowly and terribly die without it.
I noticed a lot of people on here have lots of ideas and hypotheticals about how disabled people should and could navigate the world, but their arguments fall flat and topple so easily because you’re not connecting these ideas to anyone’s intrinsic reality
This is why so many physically disabled people are fatigued by the entire “disability is a social construct” conversation. It’s overwhelmingly used by uneducated 17 year olds to minimize and downplay and discredit the real-life, life-or-death interactions and experiences many physically disabled people live with

Wow wtf HIV/AIDS was discovered by Flossie Wong-Staal, an Chinese-American woman, and she’s the reason the HIV test even exists. AND THEN she invented the molecular knife that lead to treatments for HIV/AIDS. And she’s STILL ALIVE. We don’t hear about the contributions of Women of Color enough, my word. Madness.

Israel has deployed auto-firing quadcopters that emit the sounds of crying babies.

There is no possible reality where this is in any way capable of being passed off as self-defense. It was never self-defense. It is, and always has been, a genocide.
Crying babies. Crying babies. This is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, meant to draw out and kill civilians while also making it far more difficult to locate and aid children who are trapped or alone.
If you have money to spare, please consider donating to some of the fundraisers on Operation Olive Branch to help people escape this genocide.
End the occupation. Free Palestine.

So apparently I might have mast cell activation syndrome...
Allergies can be hell
Friendly reminder that allergies are a chronic condition that can have severe permanent symptoms. In my case
eczema that was continuously openned skin for 5months (before it was treated) and that still hurts and itches when pollen or dust. Yes that is chronic pain and can be a bitch even when treated
frequent sinuses irritation/infection that brought me to the hospital once, i felt like half my face was on fire
weaker imune system because it's focused on useless shit
choking in your sleep if an allergene is present or if you have asthma (i have asthma yes)
for asthma, being more prone to lung irritation/infection
ITCHING in eyes throat and everywhere, sometimes pain is preferable to itching, it's a horrible sensation to have 24/7
edema and that shit can HURT
depression when specific pollens are active (seasonal depression for sping instead of winter/automn)
aggravating other chronic illnesses symptoms because it causes inflamations
I'd also like to hightlight that often people WILL NOT CARE if there is an allergene around that will cause you an edema or prevent you from sleeping or cause chronic pain for months. because it's chronic, people will stop thinking about it, will treat it less seriously over time, even though it can kill you.
Allergies are not just "nose itchy in spring". You can't stop being allergic to cats even if you adopt a kitten, when you have a severe allergy.

Whenever I listen to epic the musical I get filled with an overwhelming need to not let myself die because of the fact that if Im not here than there’s one less voice fighting for disabled rights and maybe I’m a quiet voice but I’m still here doing something . In real life and online and every day by calling out every little thing I can . By being annoying and nagging to the abled majority until they listen.
I think it’s cool that music can remind me that I have a voice and I should use it while I’m here

Little things adults and older people can do to help younger people and children feel included, safe, and respected as an equal individual:
Ask before touching the young person - even for hugs. Ask before you take pictures of them, and let them see photographs of them before they are printed or sent to others (even family).
Apologize when you are wrong
Ask for a young persons thoughts on a subject, then engage with them after they have spoken
Demonstrate behaviour you want to see from them (see: apologizing). Say "excuse me," say "thank you," say "please" to them
Validate their feelings, even if they don't know how to express them just yet
Remember that this is the first time they've been alive, and that you've had way longer to "figure it out"
These are some things I wish other adults remembered when engaging with young folks. We so often forget what childhood felt like and how unfair it all was because we were often awarded freedoms as adults that we never had as children. These kids are equal to adults, and they deserve the same courtesy, respect, kindness, and understanding we give to other adults.

Me: Using disabilities and symptoms of disabilities as insults or as setup and punchline to jokes is ableist.
My Comments: You can't say that because you don't have every disability ever, which means you are speaking over other disabled people. Also, you can't say that about the disabilities that you have because I assume people without your disabilities disagree with you. And I would know as I smelled a disabled person just like you once. This means that my non-argument proves that I am better than you. Checkmate, snowflake.

the weird thing is, when I view my job as some sort of background extra it becomes much more palatable. people go to a library and see me shelving a stack of books in my cardigan and glasses (now with glasses chain!) and they go "yeah, that's exactly right. that's how it's supposed to be in a library." and for some reason, that's comforting? the work is whatever, and the customers are customers, but sometimes it feels like I'm being paid just to make sure this places looks right, and I find that very fun.

People with psychotic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with personality disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with substance abuse disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with tic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with bipolar disorder are neurodivergent too.
People with dissociative disorders are neurodivergent too.
Neurodivergence isn’t just ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression. (Plus those last two also get left out sometimes!) Neurodivergence is anything that affects your brain.
“Neurodivergent people hate loud noises” is actually just as valid as a statement as “neurodivergent people have delusions,” “neurodivergent people have tics,” or even “neurodivergent people have low empathy.”

Maternity kits, medical threads and scissors, water testing kits, anesthetics, mobile desalination units, etc do you see the pattern? Israel is not only starving the people of Gaza but it also wants to ensure the spread of disease through contaminated water and surgical tools, as well as ensuring injured Palestinians suffer through horrendous pain.
It's beyond sickening.
