I have been hearing that SONIC FORCES would be if not the most lamest of all SONIC venture to the 3D realm. Honestly, I've played Sonic the hedgehog since the MEGA DRIVE days and continued to do so despite the mix love and hate drama with regards of the blue fur.
I am writing this review of SEGA's most recent release of Sonic Franchise which is currently titled as SONIC FORCES. Why it took me thaf long ? Well for financial reasons owning a console is no normal feat nowadays. Consoles have vastly improved in graphics and performance that its asking for a hefty price just to own one.
So after all of that my brother gave me a NINTENDO SWITCH. not as powerful as the PS4 and XBOX ONE but you'd be suprised on how NINTENDO was able to build a portable console or on the go unit while still providing a relative graphics ( just a bit off on resolution compared to its contemporaries ... but still able to give a punch) on how the hell they do that ... i want to know.
So moving back with SONIC FORCES, fans are outraged on the degree of mediocore difficulty the game offers. Yes you heard that right, the game isnt that hard ass kicking or asking unlike its previous incarnations ranging from the original debut of Sonic to the 3d world - Yuji Naka's Sonic Adventure series, Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, and lastly Sonic unleashed of called Sonic World Adventure in japan prior its international release and Sonic Generations which gave fans hope that the original if not the beloved gameplay is getting a comeback.
And sadly, it did 50/50. anyway the gameplay wasnt that hard and its understandable as SONIC games are originally designed for kids at young age as it was determined to rival NINTENDO'S beloved mascot Yamguchi's Mario. As to when gamers decided to leverage sonic games for hardcore and intermidiate gamers is unknown to me. This is the reason why Sonic Team decided to go one step back in the roots of the series.
I've heard numerous complaints on how dark Forces has taken its back draft of the story compared from its original debut to the 3d world ( well, sonic adventure 2 was dark by all means ) which some critics argues that the story is not on their liking. The series actually had this motiff since the original sonic games in the 16 bit era all thanks to its spin off cartoon or animation Sonic the Hedgehog with friends like princess sally and so forth. Yes, Dr. Eggman and his Machine empire out to conquer the world and Sonic and his Friends formed the resistance to liberate their world out of Eggmans evil ambition. The original story was already re-adapted to Forces and everyone should welcome its return. This is the reason why I have no bad fruit over the plot narrative as you would agree that Sonic Games are great in story telling this is also true on Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.
Gameplay and stage design using the proposes hedgehog engine thanks to havok is properly refined and bugs have been greatly minimized to a point that controllong the blue fur is manageable and no longer stressful. This is also true with a more intuitive camera angle that the developers was able to hammer up despite that Sonic is speeding up.
There are concerns that stagea are somehow short and lacks the speed run when compared to its 2d counterparts. 3d presentation of levels requires massive aechitectural approach, cost and ample amount of time. it will also consume a huge amount of memory which could increase the overall output of the game. I agree its short and at times when you feel the speed the stage ask you do to spmething else ... i know this could be vastly improved hopefully by the next iterations.
And please SEGA please bring back the mega stages where a number of paths can be taken by character abilities and router ... and bring back Tails and Knuckes to the action stages as it brings more complex gameplay than just Sonic classic, Sonic Modern, Shadow. But maintain the current rosters.
Perhaps the most innovative add on features on this game is the ability to create your own avatar and customized it at the same time which for me works flawlessly instead of adding another playable character on the list.
I mean Sonic and his friends is already huge so why not make the characters available on the current actions stages based on their abilities (Amy, Blaze, Cream, Espio etc.)
last to add is please return back the special stages act where the emeralss can be gathered to achieve Super Forms for Sonic, Shadow, Silver and knuckles. And bring back Angel Island no matter what so we can gather as well the Master Emerald for Hyper Forms.
As for the stages sound or music I am so happy that they maintained the modern rock approach. ofcourse, it will be a welcome return for Knuckles music and acid rock backgrpund music for Shadow.
Another welcome suprise is that they finally got rid of the part where you are task to walk around non-adventure stages.no more dragging moments.
As for the boss battles, i'd say it is epic and just keep it going.
lastly before i provide my verdict for Forces. We shouldnt compare the 2d Sonic Games to its 3d counterpart as 2d sprites and 3d environments would be very different to execute not alone program.
its not a perfect Sonic Game yet but considering how far Sonic Team has improved it from its heydays
I am convinced to give the game a 8/10.
KUDOS TO SEGA AND SONIC TEAM.
This game is meant for all ages and especially for the newest generation
