scott looked up from the paperwork strewn across his desk at the knock on his door. his office was famously the cosiest, welcome to staff and student alike to just come hang out or take a load off to vent. even when kids came to their favourite dorm advisor ( their only dorm advisor ) for serious business, it was still a comfortable and relaxed environment. “come on in!” he called out, capping his pen and smiling at his visitor. “how can i help?”

Sofia was not one for the niceties of conversation. They never learned them, really. They spent too much time hunched over books and learning far more about the occult than most people would even imagine learning. More than that, they found that meaningless babble about the weather and the state of one's day boggled down the conversation and only dragged it out longer. No hello, no how are you, no polite, meaningless words.  "Are single dorms a possibility here at Paragon? If so, what must I do to get one? My mothers think it smart that I live on campus, so I do not believe an apartment is a possibility." Unless they wanted to work and pay for it themselves. Which, they didn't.

Barry’s gaze was focused on a particular canine, a scraggly looking mutt that had caught his eye, when he heard a voice. The question earned a smile but he looked at the speaker with hesitance clearly written on his face. “Yeah! I mean, I’d like to. Yes. But I can’t just… take one home today. My wife would kill me. I thought I might look around though. You work here? What can you tell me about this one over here?” Walking closer, he gestured to the mutt he’d been observing, curious to learn more about it.

Sofia nodded absentmindedly, not caring much about whatever the man said other than that he wasn’t immediately able to adopt. “You can come back later when you are sure you can adopt.” They thought it better for the human and for the pet. No need for attachment if adoption is not possible. “I volunteer here. I suppose that is close enough to working here.” They looked at the animal he referred to. “That is Lucky. She is a mutt of undetermined breeds and around six months old. Before she trusts you, she can be rather shy, but after a while, she is rather energetic.”

Offense flashed on their face, briefly. “Have I ever shown myself not to be apt at the subject matter and how it should be taught?” They exhaled from their nose in one quick burst before composing themself once more. Their intelligence was, apart from their magical skill, the thing they prided themself most in. The, they shrugged their shoulders. “I do not see much purpose in more creative methods of teaching. The current practices work just fine.” It was not their job to teach students to write myths. Instead, they were to teach them the myths that already existed. “However, you are the teacher and much more educated than I. Do what you wish. If you wish to see if it could be beneficial to the students, then you can do it, and I will not protest.”

“Most movies lack basic logic. Especially romantic movies. The notion of love at first sight is silly, in general. As is the idea that after sitting in the dark for a few hours, one can fall in love with a person.” Though, Sofia was not the person to ask about anything related to love. I

          animals of any kind tended to catch lyra’s attention. having grown up considering rocket her uncle gave her a different sort of perspective of keeping animals as pets. to her animals were more like family than a simple pet. still there were times when she got lonely but didn’t want to admit it to someone that would talk back to her and judge her. animals from earth seemed to be the best choice for that. when she was addressed by the person holding the puppy, lyra grinned sheepishly. ❝ that was the plan, but i’m just looking at the moment. gotta figure out what’ll work for my living situation. ❞

In Russia, they cared for a small stray cat. They left water and leftovers outside for it every day, and then they eventually named it Marya. Shortly before their father got sick, they convinced him to let the cat live with them. After they were sent to the orphanage, they never saw Marya again. They tried not to think about the fate or Marya much after that. They raised an eyebrow at Lyra’s words. “Is that not the type of thing you should have done before you came to adopt a pet? You are allowed to look, but I suggest not getting attached until you are certain about living arrangements.”

Sofia rolled their eyes. “Why would you visit a place named the Animal Rescue League if you are not good with animals?” They scoffed. In their time volunteering, they saw many young adults and parents adopt animals they could take care of, only to return them or to let them go into the wild. Watching the girl, they couldn’t decide whether to be mad at her or not. They defaulted on anger. “If you cannot adopt an animal, you have little reason to be here. Unless you would like to volunteer or donate.”
